watching Let's Talk in English.
This is the show where we learn great English and we have fun together.
My name is Katie.
We're glad that you joined us today.
Our topic today is OFFICE.
And the title of our lesson is "Office Supplies."
Office Supplies.
Nathan, what are "office supplies"?
Oh, well, "supplies" are just things that you need.
So "office supplies" are things that you need in the office.
They will all be used in the office.
My name is Nathan.
I'm your other teacher here on Let's Talk in English.
OK, everyone.
Let's get started.
Find your magazine and turn to today's Read It.
You can follow along with Nathan right now.
Megan is looking at the supplies in Carol's office.
She orders supplies before they run out.
She always orders envelopes, pens and pencils.
Sometimes she orders paper clips, tape and erasers, too.
She needs to order special stationery for Carol.
Megan also orders printer ink and folders for Susie.
Now every office needs supplies and LTE TV is no different.
Megan is in charge of ordering them.
She has to make sure that they have enough.
And there are a lot of different supplies that offices need.
I'm sure Megan has to be really careful to make sure people always have what
they need in the office.
You're right.
And we already heard a lot of the supplies that they need in the office.
Lots of them are key words, so let's go learn more about them with our word
lady.
(Music).
Hello.
(Chinese).
Hi, Megan.
Where is Carol?
She's in a meeting.
OK.
What are you doing?
I'm checking Carol's office supplies.
I check all the office supplies.
Why? We have lots of supplies.
That's because I count and organize them.
When we are running out, I order more.
How often do you make an order?
Usually about once a month.
Most of you know what Megan's job is.
She's Carol's secretary.
That gives her lots of work to do and keeps her very busy.
She's around Carol's office a lot because of that.
And that's where she is when Susie comes looking for Carol.
But Carol is in a meeting.
I'm sure many of you have been in meetings before.
But you may not know how... that's how we say it in English.
You can say that someone "has a meeting" or that someone's "at a meeting," but
it is best to say "in a meeting."
So when you go to a meeting, you are part of it.
It makes sense to say "in a meeting."
But why is Megan in Carol's office now if Carol is not there?
Weren't you listening, Nathan?
She is checking Carol's office supplies.
That means that she is looking at them to see if they are OK or if Carol has
enough.
We often need to check things.
Teachers check students as they work.
And you check food while it's cooking.
And parents check on their kids while they are playing.
And we need to check with Christina now.
I think she has something important to tell us.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Oh, that really was important.
The word "supplies" is in the title of our lesson.
So we should really try to understand it.
Yes, we should.
And Christina said a few kinds of supplies.
But we can think of a few more that are important, like food supplies.
You always need food supplies in your house.
Yes, those are really important if you have a big family or if you can't leave
your house because of bad weather.
Most people also keep cleaning supplies at home.
Yes. You need different kinds of soap and chemicals to clean different places.
Some are for the floor, some are for windows, some are for the bathrooms, some
are for...
OK, Katie.
You seem to know lot about the cleaning supplies.
Well, that's because I like to keep things clean.
If you want to say the reason for something another person says, you can start
by saying "That's because..."
Hmm. Good to know.
So, how often do you clean your house, Katie?
Oh, I clean about once a week.
But I guess I say Use It sentences all the time.
Let's learn about the one that I just used.
(Music).
Today we are going to learn the pattern:
I do something about once a something.
For example:
I run about once a week.
Or... I watch concerts about once a year.
Don't be afraid, go ahead and use it.
(Music).
Well, thank you, Elizabeth.
That was very useful.
But there's more for us to learn in Conversation B.
What do you order the most?
We use a lot of pens and pencils.
I always order those.
How about envelopes?
I order a lot of envelopes, too.
What about paper clips, tape and erasers?
Sometimes I order them.
I should order some today.
Do you order stationery or notebooks?
Not often.
But I need to order special stationery for Carol sometimes.
Megan does need to make sure that the office has the supplies it needs.
They need many different things, but they are all important.
They really are.
You can't write things down without pens and pencils.
That's true.
But you might need an eraser to get rid of the things that you write.
And you can't write or erase anything if you don't have stationery or notebooks.
Wow. Maybe we should just use computers and not worry about all these supplies.
Hmm, computers are good for a lot of things.
But I still like to have pen and paper.
Sometimes they're the most convenient things to use.
Yes. You can write notes quickly and easily with pen and paper.
So we should still take some time to talk about those things like the word
"stationery" and "notebook."
I think so, too.
"Stationery" is paper with pictures or designs on it that you also write on.
People often use it to write letters.
Carol probably has stationery with her information on it.
Right. Her stationery probably says her name, LTE TV and the company address.
So stationery is special paper, but notebooks just have plain paper in them.
But you usually just need plain paper, so they are very useful.
Some people also use "notebook" to mean "a small computer," but you should be
careful if you do that.
Yes, many Americans don't think of a computer when they hear "notebook."
They just think of books with plain paper.
That's what I think of.
Now Megan does not buy stationery or notebooks often.
But sometimes she does buy paper clips and tape.
Now those are both good for putting things together.
A paper clip keeps lots of papers together.
They are very useful for something so small.
Now we should talk about one of our key word office supplies, too.
Envelopes.
There are two ways to say this word in English.
[ˋɛnvə͵lop] and [ˋanvə͵lop].
Both are OK.
Yes. I say envelope.
But you can say the one that is easier for you, and everyone should understand
what you are saying.
Well, we've talked a lot about supplies already, but more are coming in
Conversation C.
Why don't we take a break first.
We'll see you in a few minutes.
