You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we're glad that you joined us for our show today.
Our new topic is ENTERTAINMENT.
And the title of our lesson is "I Like the Book Better!"
I Like the Book Better!
Nathan, do you read a lot of books?
Well, I always try to read books.
Sometimes I read two at a time.
I really enjoy it.
My name is Nathan, everyone.
I'm sure that you will enjoy today's lesson, too.
So let's get started.
Take out your magazine and turn to today's Read It.
You can follow along with Nathan right now.
Megan likes the book Dreams of Alicia.
The movie of it just came out!
It's good, but Megan likes the book better.
It explains more about the characters, like the hero and Alicia.
The movie skips some parts.
Megan lends the book to Rob.
He starts to read, and he can't put it down!
He's reading the part about the castle now.
Oh, this is my favorite lesson in April.
Books are my favorite things.
I always think the book is better than the movie.
But movies can be better than books.
You can see where the movie is and what the characters look like.
Nathan, are you serious?
The book is always better.
I can't... How could you, how could you even...
Oh, OK, Katie. Uh, friends, I... I think we better go learn about today's key
words now before anything happens to Katie.
(Music).
Hello.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Jim, I'm still thinking about Dreams of Alicia.
Me, too.
Wow, what a great movie!
Did you two see Dreams of Alicia?
Yes, we saw it last night.
It was amazing!
I know.
I saw it last week.
But I liked the book better.
So the movie is from a book?
Yes! The book came out several years ago.
Well, today we're talking about books and movies.
And that reminds me of something.
I just read a great book.
I'm still thinking about it.
It had a handsome hero and a beautiful woman.
Oh... OK, Katie.
Well, now is not the time to talk about your book.
We have a different book to talk about.
And a Use It sentence that you just said.
Let's learn about it now.
(Music).
Let's learn how to use the pattern:
I'm still thinking about something.
You could say:
I'm still thinking about my vacation.
Or... I'm still thinking about lunchtime.
Mmm.
Friends, don't forget to use it!
(Music).
Thanks, Elizabeth.
Now I want to tell you about the book I'm still thinking about.
But Nathan won't let me.
So let's talk about what Rob is still thinking about.
OK.
Rob is still thinking about Dreams of Alicia.
But he is not thinking about the book.
He's thinking about the movie.
That's right.
Rob and Jim went to see that movie last night and they say it was amazing.
How do you talk about movies, friends?
You can say that "a movie was good or interesting."
Or you can say "a movie was just OK."
It was not that good.
But if it's really good, say the movie was amazing.
It was terrific.
Yes.
But Megan saw Dreams of Alicia last week.
So they have all seen this movie.
But Megan says something here.
She liked the book better.
Well, wait.
Better than what?
Oh, Nathan, she liked the book better than the movie.
I always like the book better than the movie.
Books are so much better...
OK. Katie, Katie, you're getting too excited again.
Uh, right now we need to learn about that pattern "I like something better" from
Christina.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Megan liked the book Dreams of Alicia more than she liked the movie.
Many times movies are from books.
So someone will write a book,
and then people will make a movie of the book.
It has the same story.
Yes, that's right.
The movie will be about the same people,.
and usually the same things happen in the movie that happen in the book.
Sometimes it doesn't.
Sometimes they change the movie.
And that's why the book is always better than the movie.
It's bad when they change the story.
OK. Yeah, Katie is getting a little upset again.
I think that now we need to move on to conversation B, give her a little break.
Here we go.
Do you have the book Dreams of Alicia?
Yes.
I can lend it to you.
The book is long.
But it's very good!
Why do you like it?
You learn more about the characters in the book.
And more things happen.
So the movie skips some parts of the book.
Yes, it does.
So the book "Dreams of Alicia" came out several years ago.
And Megan has read it.
That is why Rob asks if she has the book.
And Megan says that she can lend the book to him.
He wants to read it.
Before we go on, let's see what Christina wants to tell you about the word
"lend."
(Chinese).
(Music).
Have you ever "lended" someone something, friends?
Maybe you "lended" your friend a movie or a book...
Nathan, wait a minute.
What did you just say?
Um. I asked everyone if they have "lended" a friend a movie or something.
What's wrong?
Oh, that's not right.
You don't say that you "lended" someone something, you say you "lent" something.
L-E-N-T "lent," not "lended."
Oh, really.
So I should say, "Have you ever lent someone a movie?"
That's right.
Great job, Nathan.
Friends, make sure that you remember that.
Now let's keep learning together.
Yes.
Megan wants to lend Rob this book.
It's very long, but it's good.
Hey, Katie, what is the longest book you have ever read?
Oh, I have read "Gone with the wind."
It's more than 1,000 pages long.
Oh, Nathan, that book is so much better than the movie.
It's a love story.
And Scarlett loves Rhett...
Katie... you're doing it again.
We need to teach.
So why does Megan like this book better than the movie?
Well, she has a great answer.
In the book, you learn more about the characters.
Those are the people in the story.
You get to know what they are thinking and why they to do the things they do.
And we do not just find characters in books.
There are characters in TV shows and movies and plays, too.
That's right.
There are a lot of characters and things that we watch and we read.
And here's something else that's important: in a book, more things happen.
It's OK if a book is really long.
But movies are only about two hours long.
So sometimes movies take away things that happen in the books, because there is
not enough room.
That's right.
Some movies skip parts of the book.
Oh, I hate it when that happens.
It's so annoying because I want to see everything that happens.
It just...
You know what, I'll tell you more about it later.
I think that right now we should take a quick break.
But don't worry, we'll be right back soon.
