Welcome back, everyone.
Today our entertainment lesson is called "I Like the Book Better!"
So what about you?
Have you ever read a book and then watched the movie?
Which one did you think was better?
That's a good question.
Some people might like the movie or the book better.
But the books usually have more things that happen in them.
Sometimes since movies are only a couple hours long, they need to skip some
parts.
They cannot show everything.
Well, let's see what else happens in today's Conversation C.
(Music).
Hi, Rob.
What are you reading?
I'm reading Dreams of Alicia.
I borrowed it from Megan.
I saw the movie last weekend.
It's really good!
Is the book good, too?
It's great!
I can't put it down!
What part are you reading?
The hero meets Alicia.
He's taking her to his castle.
That's such a good part!
Oh, hey.
Now Susie is here.
We haven't seen her yet today.
And she's talking to Rob.
He is reading Dreams of Alicia right now.
Good for him.
Yes, he is.
He borrowed it from Megan.
Hey, that's today's Calendar Phrase.
I borrowed it.
I borrowed it.
(Chinese).
I like that shirt.
Thanks. I borrowed it.
I like that tie.
Thanks. I borrowed it.
I like that hat.
Thanks. I borrowed it.
You borrowed all these things?
Yes, from you!
Oh. That's why I like them.
I borrowed it.
I borrowed it.
(Chinese).
Hey, I can use that Calendar Phrase.
I just remembered this.
I borrowed a book from Nathan.
He let me read his book.
Oh, and it was a great book.
It was about this small town in the United States...
Katie. Katie, focus.
We don't have time for that right now.
We need to talk about this conversation.
Sorry, Nathan. I just really love books.
Well, Susie has seen this movie, too.
And she wants to know if the book is good.
And Rob thinks it is.
He can't put it down.
Oh, that is a great phrase.
If you "can't put a book down," it means you "can't stop reading it."
Oh, Katie, does this happen to you?
Oh, yes.
When I can't put a book down, I want to spend all my time reading it.
I read on the way to work.
I read during lunch.
I read at night.
And sometimes when I can't put it down, then I stay up too late reading.
So if you can't put it down, it must be a really great book.
And we usually only use this phrase when we are talking about books.
Well, wait.
I know some people who can't put their phones down.
They stay on their phone all the time, texting friends or playing games.
Can we use that phrase that way?
Oh, yes. I think that does work.
Now maybe you can't put your phone down.
That's a good example.
Yes, I think it is.
Now Susie wants to know what part Rob is reading.
We often say that books are "made up of parts."
You can read the first or last part of the book.
Or a part is also when something happens.
Maybe it's a really exciting part.
Or maybe there's a boring part.
But Rob is at a good part.
The hero is taking Alicia to the castle.
Now the hero is the main person in a book or in a movie.
And I can tell you all about a great hero from a story that I read.
Yeah. But before you do that, Katie, let's review our key words together.
Friends, say them with us.
Here's the first key word.
dream.
dream.
I had an unusual dream last night.
character.
character.
Who is your favorite TV character?
hero.
hero.
The hero keeps the girl safe.
lend.
lend.
I can lend you that movie.
castle.
castle.
We visited an old castle on vacation.
OK, everyone, those are all the words that we learn today.
Make sure that you practice them at home.
Right now we want to look back at our conversations we saw today.
.
Jim, I'm still thinking about Dreams of Alicia.
Me, too.
Wow, what a great movie!
Did you two see Dreams of Alicia?
Yes, we saw it last night.
It was amazing!
I know.
I saw it last week.
But I liked the book better.
So the movie is from a book?
Yes! The book came out several years ago.
Do you have the book Dreams of Alicia?
Yes. I can lend it to you.
The book is long.
But it's very good!
Why do you like it?
You learn more about the characters in the book.
And more things happen.
So the movie skips some parts of the book.
Yes, it does.
(Music).
Hey, Monkey Man.
Uh, not now, Ginger.
I'm busy.
Busy!
You're not busy.
You're reading a book.
Yes, I'm busy reading a book.
Now please don't bother me, OK?
When can I bother you?
When I finish the book.
But it's a big book.
Can you skip some parts?
No. It's a great story and I can't put it down.
Why not?
Well, I want to see how it ends.
When will you finish?
Never, if you keep interrupting!
Now... shhh...
Fine!
I'll go see the movie.
And I'll find out the end before you!
Today we are going to Answer It.
Here is question one.
What movie did Rob and Jim see last night?
What movie did Rob and Jim see last night?
Find the answer in Conversation A.
They saw Dreams of Alicia.
OK. Question two.
Do you like books or movies more?
Why?
Do you like books or movies more?
Why?
OK. Let's hear from our friends.
(Music).
Do I like books or movies more?
Well, definitely I like movies more.
Why?
Because I like to do many things while I enjoy my movies.
Especially at home with DVDs , I can be cooking or doing other things like
cleaning,
and still be able to enjoy my movies and not miss anything at all.
Do I like books or movies more?
That's easy.
I like movies more.
Books sometimes are boring for me.
I have to sit still and read in one place.
In a movie, I can sit in a different place, I can lay own.
I can even talk on the phone watching a movie.
But reading a book, I need to concentrate more.
So movies are better for me.
Do I like books or movies more?
I like books more.
Books have more details than movies.
Movies often leave out a lot of important details.
I also like to imagine the characters myself.
Besides, it's hard to watch a movie when I'm outside in my garden.
I love to take a good book with me and read for hours in my beautiful flower
garden.
Do I like books or movies better?
I like movies much better.
I'm a slow reader, so it takes me a long time to read a book even if it's a good
book.
So if I go to the movies, I can sit there for few hours, relax, eat popcorn and
finish the whole movie in a short time.
I like movies better.
Well, everyone, that's the end of our show.
And we don't have any more time.
So make sure that you join us tomorrow right here on...
Let's Talk in English.
Bye-bye.
(Music).
