everybody.
Thank you for joining us here on Let's Talk in English.
We have a great show ready for you.
My name is Nathan.
I am one of your teachers here on the show.
And today we have a new topic SCHOOL.
And this school lesson is called "Study Smart!"
Study Smart!
Do you study well, Katie?
Well, when I was in school, I think I studied well.
But now, if I went back, I don't think that I would study well.
I should probably listen hard to this lesson.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie, and I'm really glad that you all joined us today.
Now let's practice our reading together.
Open your LTE magazine and find today's Read It.
Now you can read it with Katie.
Don't put off studying!
Many students cram the night before an exam.
But they don't learn much.
Students should study a little every day.
Then they will be more prepared for tests.
Also, plan rewards into study time.
Study in a quiet place and don't text friends during study time.
Sleep is also important.
That's when the brain organizes learning.
What an important lesson.
You are all students whether you're in school or not.
Because you are all studying English with us.
That's right.
But if you are in school, maybe now it's a good time to think about what kind of
student you are.
Do you try to learn everything in one night?
That's called "cramming."
That's not a good way to study.
We should find out some better ways to study.
So let's start the lesson by learning today's key words with our word lady.
(Music).
Hello.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk.
Do you want to learn how to be a better student?
Well, then listen carefully to our guest today.
Please help me welcome Ms. Sara Student!
(Background Noise).
Welcome to our show, Sara!
We're glad to have a student here to talk about studying.
Thank you, Rob.
What tips do you have for us about studying?
Don't put off studying!
Many students do.
Then they cram the night before the exam.
I used to do that.
And how did you do?
Not very well.
And I soon forgot most of what I studied.
That's the problem!
(Music).
Rob's guest on the show today is a student named Sara.
She wants to talk to everyone about studying.
She has some tips or ideas that might help you.
And the first tip is a great one.
Don't put off studying!
"Putting something off" means that you wait to do it.
We often put off things that we don't want to do.
Oh, yes.
Sometimes I put off cleaning my apartment.
And then it just gets too messy.
Other people put off going to the doctor because they don't like the visit.
That's right.
And I often put off going to the grocery store because there are always too many
people there.
But a lot of students put off studying.
And then they cram the night before the exam.
That's a sentence that Christina will talk to you about right now.
(Music).
(Chinese).
(Music).
So "cramming for an exam" means "trying to learn everything important in one
night."
Nathan, have you ever done that?
I have to say I often studied like that as a student.
Now you might try to study the day before the test for many hours, but it won't
be enough.
You're trying to learn too much in a short time.
And then you forget everything when you take the test.
That is what happened to Rob, too.
He forgot a lot of what he studied.
Yes, he used to do that.
He did that when he was a student, but he does not anymore.
That's good.
Maybe he learned some better ways to study when he was a student.
There are a lot of different ways you can study.
Well, now I think that we should see what else Sara has to teach us in
Conversation B.
So students need better study habits.
Yes, we do.
I try to spend time every day studying each class's information.
Then I'm better prepared for the tests.
And you actually learn more.
I do.
I also plan rewards into my study time.
What do you mean?
I tell myself things like, I'll read 20 pages of this book.
When I finish, I can play one computer game.
But only one!
So cramming for an exam is a bad study habit.
And that's why Rob says, "Students need some better study habits."
And don't forget, a habit is something you do a lot.
And you don't have to think about it very much.
Do you know what your study habits are?
I think it's important to know the answer to that question.
Sara has one good study habit that she tells us about.
Yes. She tries to spend time every day studying information from each class.
And that is a great idea.
You can study the things you learn in class that day.
And that way, you won't forget it.
And that's a good sentence to use, too.
I try to spend time every day doing something.
I try to spend some time every day praying.
I try to spend some time every day writing.
And I also try to spend some time every day reading the news.
You can tell a friend what you spend time doing, friends.
That's a good idea.
So, everyone, if you spend time studying each class's information, you will be
better prepared for tests.
And "better prepared for something" means "you are more ready."
If you are prepared for a test, you are ready for it and you think that you will
do well on the test.
That's right.
Now, Sara has another tip.
She plans rewards into her study time.
Hmm, what does she mean?
We'll find out.
But first, let's learn about that Calendar Phrase.
(Music).
What do you mean?
What do you mean?
(Chinese).
Smoking isn't good for you.
What do you mean?
Smoking makes people cough.
What do you mean?
Smoking is a bad habit.
What do you mean?
Quit smoking!
So that's what you mean.
What do you mean?
What do you mean?
(Chinese).
So Sara has a great idea.
Plan rewards into study time.
So maybe after you read 20 pages, you can go do something fun.
And I think now we should have a reward, too.
Let's take a break.
Don't go away, everyone.
