You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we're glad that you joined us for the show today.
Our topic is still FOOD.
And we have part two of our lesson "What's in That Dish?"
What's in That Dish?
Nathan, do you have a favorite dish?
Oh. That is too hard to choose.
I probably have a favorite American dish, and a favorite Chinese dish and a
favorite Italian dish.
There are too many to choose from.
Hello, everyone.
My name is Nathan.
I am your other teacher here on Let's Talk in English.
Now it's time to start the lesson.
So find your magazine and turn to today's Read It.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
How can you make healthy food taste good?
Sometimes healthy food tastes horrible.
Many people even hate healthy food.
Broccoli is healthy, but it doesn't always taste good.
So next time you cook broccoli, steam it.
Use a little salt and pepper, too.
Chicken is good for you, too.
But don't fry it.
Bake it with a little lemon juice and some spices instead.
We say this a lot here on Let's Talk in English, but it is important to eat
healthy food.
And that's what our lesson is about today.
Yes. We'll find out how to make healthy food taste great.
I think this lesson will be very helpful, Katie.
I think so, too.
I used to hate healthy food.
I didn't like how it tasted.
And I think a lot of people feel that way.
Hmm. That's probably true.
Now before we start, let's learn today's key words with Christina.
(Music).
Hello.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Sherry, welcome to the show.
You're a chef with a great goal.
Can you explain it?
I want to cook healthy food.
But the food must taste great, too!
Healthy food does taste a little bad sometimes.
When I was young, I thought healthy food tasted horrible!
Why did you change your mind?
I started to cook healthy food in different ways.
Well, to tell us all about healthy food, Sherry is at the studio.
Rob is interviewing her, and she is a chef.
Ah. A chef is someone who makes food.
Many chefs work in really nice restaurants.
They cook delicious food.
Now anyone can learn how to cook , but if you want to be a chef,
you usually have to go to a special school for chefs.
There, you learn a lot of things about food.
That's right.
Now Sherry is a chef with a great goal.
A goal is something that you want to try to do.
And Sherry explains her goal.
"Explaining something" is telling someone about something, so they understand.
Your teachers will explain things to you in school.
Maybe you buy a new computer or cell phone, someone will probably explain it to
you and tell you how it works.
We help explain English to you here on the show.
That's right.
We want you to understand and speak English well.
So that's why we explain everything to you.
Yes.
So Sherry wants to cook healthy food.
But she wants it to taste great, too.
Like we said earlier, sometimes healthy food doesn't taste good.
That's right.
And if something doesn't taste good, why would you want to eat it?
It can be a problem.
When I was young, I thought healthy food tasted so bad.
And so did Sherry.
But she uses the word "horrible," which is a key word today.
"Horrible" is a word that means something is even worse than bad.
So Sherry used to think healthy food tasted horrible when she was a kid.
If you think healthy food taste bad, maybe you are a picky eater.
Oh, that is a good word to know.
Picky.
If you're a picky eater, maybe you do not like a lot of food.
You only pick a few things to eat.
Yes.
Picky eaters usually don't like healthy food because it can taste bad or weird.
I used to be a really picky eater.
Nathan, are you a picky eater?
Oh, no. I'm not a picky eater.
I don't like some things, but I'll try anything.
But Sherry used to think healthy food tasted bad.
Now she doesn't think that.
That's right.
She changed her mind because she started to cook healthy food in different ways.
And that is a sentence Christina will tell you more about right now.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Different ways?
Like what?
Here's an example.
I used to hate broccoli.
Broccoli is really healthy.
But it doesn't always taste very good.
Right.
So I cooked it with some salt and pepper and a little lemon juice.
And it tasted great!
Do you like broccoli now?
Yes! I cook it all the time!
Tell us some other healthy cooking tips!
(Music).
So Sherry cooks healthy food in different ways now.
Rob asks, "Like what?" he wants to know which ways she cooks the food.
So let's find out now.
Yes. She gives us an example.
She tells us about one thing.
Sherry used to hate broccoli.
She really, really did not like it.
It's healthy, but it doesn't always taste good.
Nathan, do you have a food that you hate?
Hmm. Well, I guess I hate mushrooms a little.
We use the word "hate" to talk about things that you really don't like.
Now we sometimes talk about things we hate doing or places that we hate going.
But it's not nice to say that we hate people.
You should try not to say that because it could make someone feel bad, and it's
just wrong.
That is right.
Now Sherry tried to cook broccoli in a different way.
She cooked it with salt, pepper and a little lemon juice.
Hmm, that's a great idea.
Yesterday we talked about lemon dressing.
Do you remember?
Jim was eating a salad with lemon dressing.
But lemon juice is different.
Oh, yes.
Lemon juice is just the juice or the water from a lemon.
It tastes sour.
But it can make things like broccoli have a better flavor.
I think it would help.
I want to try this broccoli and lemon.
It sounds like it tasted great.
Yes, it does.
And Katie, I think that you just used today's Calendar Phrase.
It tasted great!
It tasted great!
(Chinese).
Did you like the soup?
Yes. It tasted great!
Did you like the salad?
Yes. It tasted great.
Did you like the chicken?
Yes. It tasted great.
I didn't know you could cook.
I can't.
I ordered this food from the restaurant.
It tasted great!
It tasted great!
(Chinese).
So once Sherry cooked the broccoli in a different way, it tasted great.
And now Sherry likes broccoli.
She cooks it all the time.
Hey, that phrase "all the time" is something we should learn about.
If you do something "all the time," that means you do it very often.
Yes. I read all the time.
I read in the morning and at night.
Or... I work all the time.
Because I go to work every day.
But maybe you study all the time.
You have to go to school and then you study at home and do your homework at
night, and now you're watching our TV show.
I think you need a break.
We'll be back in a few minutes.
