Welcome to Let's Talk in English, everyone.
We are ready for a great lesson today, and we hope that you like it, too.
My name is Nathan.
I'm one of your teachers here on the show.
Today we have a new topic for you, it's FOOD.
And our FOOD lesson is called "What's in That Dish?"
What's in That Dish?
Katie, what is "a dish"?
Well, when you go to a restaurant, many times you order food and we can call
that "a dish."
So sometimes you can order one dish, or many dishes of food at a restaurant.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie, and I'm your other teacher here on the show.
Now, let's practice our reading together with today's "Read It".
Find it in your magazine, and read along with Katie right now.
Mark, Jim, and Susie are eating at the Jungle Café.
Their food is really good!
Jim is eating a salad with lemon dressing.
The dressing tastes a little sour.
Mark is eating a pasta dish with cream sauce.
Susie has cheese fries!
These fries are delicious.
Today is all about food.
Mmm. Many times we talk about food, and we say what our favorite thing to eat
is.
Maybe your favorite thing to eat is pizza, or hamburgers, or spaghetti.
But it's also important to know what else is in your food.
So that's why our lesson today is called "What's in That Dish?"
We want to know what is in all of these dishes.
So after this lesson, you can talk about the dish you order at a restaurant.
You can tell people about it.
Well, that will be great.
Now let's get started and learn today's key words with our word lady.
Hello.
(Chinese).
This salad is delicious.
Try some!
You're right.
That is delicious.
The dressing tastes so... so...
It's a little sweet.
And a little sour.
Yes. What is that flavor?
Can I try some?
Sure! Have some.
Ah! I taste lemon.
The dressing has a lemon flavor.
(Music).
So the first dish that we talk about today is salad.
And salads are a very healthy food.
But there are many different kinds.
That's right.
You can have salad with chicken in it.
Or you could eat fruit salad, and that's a lot of different fruit that is all
mixed together.
But many times with salad, you also put something on top of it.
That's called "dressing."
Now dressing is like a sauce.
Today, Jim has lemon dressing.
It's a little sour.
Oh. That is a "Use It" sentence for today.
Let's learn about it with Elizabeth right now.
Hi, friends. Today we're looking at an easy but helpful pattern:
It's a little... (something).
For example,
It's a little sad.
Or... It's a little unusual.
That means it's not normal.
Now it's your turn.
Go out and use it!
(Music).
Thanks, Elizabeth.
So sour foods have a really different taste.
They don't taste very sweet.
Some people don't like sour things, because they think it tastes bad.
Yeah, right. And I do not like sour food very much because I think it tastes
very strong.
There are other ways to talk about food, though.
And we have already said sour and sweet.
That's right.
But you can also say that some food is spicy, and that means that it is very
hot.
It makes your mouth burn a lot of the time.
When we talk about food, we also use other words.
"Flavor" is one word to talk about taste.
Foods all have flavor.
That's what something tastes like.
That's right.
Some foods have a very strong flavor like spicy food or the dressing that was on
Jim's salad.
And lemons are a sour food, so the flavor is really strong.
But some foods don't have much flavor.
Maybe chicken with nothing on it has just a little flavor.
Now, in our conversation, they are trying to find out what the flavor is in the
salad dressing.
That's right. And Susie knows what the flavor is.
She tastes lemon.
And that is a sentence that Christina will tell you all about right now.
(Chinese).
(Music).
This pasta dish is really good, too.
Try some, Susie.
OK.
Mmm, that's good.
What kind of meat is in it?
It's chicken.
The sauce is delicious.
I like the herbs and spices.
What else does the sauce have in it?
The sauce has cream and butter in it.
Yum! Can I try some?
(Music).
OK, everyone.
Our next dish is a delicious dish.
It tastes really great.
And that dish is pasta.
Pasta is a kind of noodle dish.
And when you eat pasta, you can have a lot of different things in it.
You can have chicken or shrimp.
And Mark has chicken in his pasta.
And there are so many different sauces that you can have with pasta.
Mark's pasta dish has cream sauce.
Or you can try tomato sauce.
Now that's like spaghetti sauce.
Katie, what's your favorite pasta sauce?
Ooh, I love pesto sauce.
It is a green sauce you can put on pesto.
But I think that it is so delicious.
Now, friends, Susie says that the cream sauce is delicious.
She really likes the herbs and spices.
Katie, what... what did you just say?
What? I said Susie likes the herbs and spices.
Ah, I don't think that you're saying that word right.
Which word? Herb?
Yeah.
Herb.
Let's go to Christina.
She knows how to say this word, and maybe Katie should listen.
(Music).
(Chinese).
Oh. It's "/ɚb/," not "/hɚb/".
I was saying it wrong.
Thanks, Christina.
Friends, make sure you remember how to say that.
Well, let's keep learning.
So when you're eating delicious food,
we have a great word in English to say - yum.
Oh, good word.
"Yum" is the same as "yummy."
We say that when we really like the food.
And that's what Jim says, and he wants to try Susie's food.
Oh. "Hey," he says, "can I try some?"
If you want to try a friend's food, you can say that.
It's a great phrase because that's today's Calendar Phrase.
Can I try some?
Can I try some?
(Chinese).
I baked cookies.
Can I try some?
I used a new recipe.
Can I try some?
They have a special flavor.
Can I try some?
Sure. Help yourself.
These cookies taste like beef.
I know.
They're for the dog.
Ew.
Can I try some?
Can I try some?
(Chinese).
So when you're eating with friends, maybe you use this phrase.
It's fun to share food and try everyone's dishes.
Well, now, friends, it's time for us to take a quick break.
We'll be right back.
