Welcome to Let's Talk in English, everyone.
We hope that you are ready to have some fun and to learn some English with us.
Well, my name is Nathan.
I'm one of your teachers here on the show.
And today we have a new topic for you: HOLIDAYS.
This lesson is called "Easter!"
Easter!
But what is "Easter," Katie?
Well, Easter is a holiday, of course.
It was just Easter yesterday.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie, and I'm your other teacher here on the show.
Now Easter always comes in the spring.
And it's on a Sunday when many people go to church.
On Easter, people remember something special about Jesus.
He died but he came back to life.
That is very important to Christians.
Now let's find out more in today's Read It!
Find it in your LTE magazine and read along with Katie right now.
Yesterday was Easter.
Susie went to church.
Then she went to a friend's house for dinner.
Megan helped with an Easter egg hunt the day before Easter.
She helped hide more than 2,000 eggs.
Carol sang in a choir at her church on Easter.
They sang wonderful songs about Jesus and new life.
Well, people do different things on Easter.
Today we'll see what our friends at LTE TV did for Easter.
Many people spend time with family or friends at church.
Now you may not know much about Easter, but it's a very special holiday.
People all around the world celebrate it.
Well, before we hear what our friends did yesterday,
we need to learn with another friend - Christina, our word lady.
Hello.
(Chinese).
Did you have a nice Easter, Susie?
Yes, I did, Rob.
Did you?
Yes, thanks.
What did you do?
I went to church.
Then I went over to a friend's house for dinner.
That's nice.
What did you do?
I went to church, too.
I really enjoyed the music there.
I love the music at Easter.
You know, lots of great things happen on holidays.
Some holidays have great music like Easter or Christmas.
And people have great parties, too.
Yeah, and you can usually share a good time and good food with people you love.
Holidays really are wonderful.
And I was just thinking, Katie.
Holidays are good for practicing English, too.
Good for practicing English.
What do you mean, Nathan?
Well, holidays are a good time to talk to people you don't know well.
You can say things like "Have a Happy Easter!" or "Merry Christmas!"
But you can also ask some questions.
That's true.
You can ask questions to learn about holidays that are new to you.
I know I have asked people questions about Chinese holidays.
That's a good way to learn about other cultures.
And you can also ask easy questions like: Did you have a nice Easter?
Yes. It's good to ask questions like that after holidays.
Now let's learn more about that question with Elizabeth right now.
Sometimes instead of asking "How are you?" you can use the pattern:
Did you have a nice something?
You could say:
Did you have a nice day?
Or... Did you have a nice dinner?
I hope you have a nice day.
And I also hope you use it.
(Music).
Well, I think we should all try to use that Use It often.
Instead of just saying "Hello" or "How are you?" it's good to use this sentence
pattern.
Did you have a nice something?
You can ask a question like that.
That is a good idea.
It's polite to say, "How are you?"
But questions like that show people that you really do care.
So, did you have a nice Easter, Nathan?
Oh, me?
Well, I had a great Easter.
I went to church.
It's always special on Easter.
Thanks for asking, Katie.
Of course.
Now I think that we should talk more about today's key word "church."
We often think of a church as a place or building.
Sometimes it is.
But sometimes it isn't.
Oh, I know what you mean.
I just said, "I went to church."
But if we go places, we usually say: I went to the store.
We can't say: I went to store.
Why is it different?
Good question.
You can think of church like something that happens, not a place.
Like: I went to class.
So Nathan went to church.
And then what did you do?
Then I had a big lunch.
Let's talk to Christina about that word: then.
(Chinese).
Did you have a good weekend, Megan?
I did!
I helped with an Easter egg hunt on Saturday.
Where was the hunt?
It was in City Park.
We hid more than 2,000 eggs!
That is a lot of eggs!
Yes.
Hundreds of children came to the hunt.
They found all the eggs.
And they had lots of fun!
Today you have learned that many people go to church on Easter.
But there are other things that many people do around Easter.
Like Easter egg hunts.
That's when people like Megan hide eggs for kids to go and find.
Megan helped with a big Easter egg hunt.
Yeah. They hid over 2,000 eggs.
I hope a lot of people were helping.
And I hope a lot of kids will be hunting for them, too.
Right.
Hunts are things that happen.
But you can also hunt for things.
If you hunt for something, it often means that you are trying to find animals
for food.
Yes. You can use that key word in more than one way.
Now, Nathan, this lesson is making me think about when I was little.
It has been a long time since I hunted Easter eggs.
Well, I remember doing that when I was a kid, too.
Actually, I was in an Easter egg hunt just a couple of years ago.
Oh, you mean that you were helping with one just like Megan, right?
That's nice.
Um. No.
I was looking for eggs with the kids in my family.
Yeah.
Uh, but I'm glad you said that, Katie, because Christina wants to talk about a
pattern you used.
(Music).
(Chinese).
Well, I'm sure we have all helped people with something before.
But Nathan, weren't you a little old for an Easter egg hunt?
Yes. I was a little too old for that.
Now Easter egg hunts are usually for little kids.
But my grandma wanted me to look for the eggs, too.
Oh, that's OK.
Lots of grandmas are like that.
You're still a kid to her.
Uh, thanks, Katie.
Well, did you have any Easter egg hunts when you were little?
Well, yes.
My sister and I would always look for eggs in our backyard after church.
Some people use real chicken eggs in Easter egg hunts, but a lot of people
don't.
Does your family use real eggs, Nathan?
Oh, no, not for the hunt.
They used colorful eggs that you can open up.
They usually put a candy or a little money in them.
Yes, a lot of people use eggs like that.
And that's why kids like Easter eggs hunts so much.
Well, we've learned a lot today already.
So I think that it's time for a break.
Don't go away.
(Music).
