Welcome back to the show, everyone.
Today in our NATURE lesson, we have talked about hobbies or things that you like
to do.
And the hobby we're talking about is gardening.
And it is a really fun and healthy hobby.
And if you are going to garden,
you need to know how to take care of plants and flowers.
All plants and flowers need sunlight and water to live.
Let's learn some more in Conversation C.
I live in an apartment.
I don't have much space for a garden.
What can I do?
Keep a small garden on your balcony or near a window.
You can grow flowers or herbs.
Those will make my apartment smell nice.
And they look nice, too!
Thanks for your advice, Ms. Petalfield.
I'll buy some seeds and start my garden this week!
Well, when you garden, you usually do that outside.
But not everyone lives in a big house or has a lot of space outside.
Like Rob, he lives in an apartment.
So because he lives in an apartment, he doesn't have much space for a garden.
Apartments are small, so you can't have a lot of things in them.
That's right.
I have a small apartment, too.
So I don't buy a lot of books or big things because there's nowhere to put them.
And Rob doesn't have much space for a garden.
So that can be a problem.
What can he do?
Well, Petunia gives him an idea.
He can keep a small garden on his balcony or near a window.
So you can grow plants or flowers or herbs out there.
Now, Katie, what are herbs?
Well, that's a great question, Nathan.
Herbs are things you can put on your food to make it taste better or spicier.
One good herb is basil.
A lot of people use this herb when they cook.
That's right.
And you don't need a lot of space to grow herbs.
You just need a small pot and then you can grow the herbs in there.
Yeah.
And if you grow them on a balcony or near a window,
they will get enough sunlight.
And that way, they will live.
Yes.
You can also grow flowers there, too.
And they will do something great for your apartment.
They will make it smell nice.
Flowers usually smell really nice.
Yes, they do.
And one flower that smells really great is the lily.
They always have a strong smell.
But it is a big flower,
so it might be hard to grow that flower on your balcony.
That's true.
Maybe Rob can grow something small like daisies.
Those flowers are not so big and they smell good, too.
And having flowers in your apartment makes everything look a little nicer.
It can make a small place look a little more exciting.
Hmm. Well, we got some great advice from Petunia.
Rob is so excited that he wants to buy some seeds and start this week.
That's a good idea.
Before you can have plants or flowers, you have to get seeds.
Plants, flowers and herbs all grow from seeds.
And do you know what you need before you can speak English?
Some key words.
I think we should practice ours from today.
Here's today's first key word.
seed.
seed.
Eat the apple, not the seeds!
garden.
garden.
My grandma grows beans in her garden.
dig.
dig.
My dog loves to dig in the dirt.
water.
water.
Please water the flowers every week.
sunlight.
sunlight.
The cat loves to lie in the sunlight.
OK, everyone, those are all of our key words that we learned for today.
Make sure you practice them.
They are very helpful.
Right now we want to review all of our conversations.
(Music).
Today we're talking about gardens.
Ms. Petunia Petalfield is here to tell us about them!
I'm glad to be here!
Gardening is such a fun hobby!
And it's good for you!
How is it good for you?
Well, digging and moving dirt and plants is good exercise.
And you can grow healthy fruits and vegetables in a garden.
That's right!
I had a plant once.
But it died.
What did I do wrong?
Maybe you didn't water it enough.
Or maybe you watered it too much.
Or maybe it didn't get enough sunlight.
Maybe.
Plants need water and sunlight to grow.
But different plants need different amounts of those things.
So how do you know?
Learn about your plants first.
That helps!
(Music).
Uh, Ginger, what are you doing?
I'm waiting.
I'm waiting for my flower to grow.
Um...
But I don't see a flower in your pot.
That's why I'm waiting.
Grow, flower, grow! Come on!
Uh, Ginger, do you water your flower?
Yes. Every day.
Hmm.
Do you put it in the sunlight?
Yes. Every day.
OK. So when did you plant the seed?
Seed. What seed?
Ginger, you can't grow a flower without a seed!
Oh! You can't?
Oh.
Oh. So that's why I'm still waiting.
Ginger!
(Music).
Come in, Mikey.
Uh, have a seat.
I wanted to talk to you about something.
Yeah, I know.
My test.
And your homework.
You never do your English homework.
I hate homework.
Why don't you do your homework?
Because, Ms. Hartford, I don't think...
Er... I can't do...
There's never any...
What kind of school gives so...
Ah... I need Super Sentence Man.
I am Super Sentence Man.
And the super sentence you need is:
I don't have much time for homework.
I don't have much time for homework.
Super Sentence Man, I love you.
I know.
Now, the super sentence for today is:
I don't have much something for something else.
Can you use this super sentence in another way?
Sure. I don't have much room for this computer.
I don't have much room for this computer.
Good.
What about you, teacher Hartford?
What super sentence do you have for me?
I don't have much money for shopping.
I don't have much money for shopping.
A super sentence!
Now what super sentence do you need to use with your teacher?
Ms. Hartford, I don't have much time for homework.
And that is how you use a super sentence.
Remember, a super sentence every day will make your English great.
Thanks, Super Sentence Man.
You always help me when I'm in trouble.
If you did your English homework, Super Sentence Man would not need to help you.
But that's why I never do my English homework.
I call Super Sentence Man every day!
So, friends, what do you think?
Do you think gardening will be one of your new hobbies?
It can be a great hobby.
You can get exercise and you can grow your own food.
Both of those are really good things.
Yes. I think that gardening can keep you a little healthy.
I think I want to try it.
I'd like to grow some flowers.
Maybe I can go buy some seeds.
Hmm.
I think I would grow some vegetables if I had a garden.
That way I wouldn't have to go out and buy so much food.
Oh, well, that is a great idea.
If you grow your vegetables at home,
then you don't have to go to the supermarket anymore.
And you could save some money that way.
Well, friends, we have to go now.
But tomorrow there is a review show.
And on Monday, we'll have new lessons for you.
So make sure that you come back and join us then right here on...
Let's Talk in English.
Bye-bye.
(Music).
