Welcome back to Let's Talk in English.
We are talking about allergies today in our lesson.
Carol has allergies.
But what is she allergic to?
Well, she is allergic to some kinds of flowers.
That's right.
And medicine and showers can help her allergies.
She can shower and rinse the pollen off of her.
Now let's see what else we need to learn in Conversation C.
Have you tried rinsing your eyes?
Oh, yes.
When my eyes really itch, I rinse them with cool water.
Then they feel better for a little while.
I know something else that might help.
What?
Eating something spicy.
Then you'll be able to breathe!
Because my nose will run.
That's right!
Maybe I should try that!
I've never heard of that before.
I wonder if it really works.
Well, Mark has some other ideas to help Carol with her allergies.
He sure does, Nathan.
Now why do you think he has these ideas?
Hmm. Well, maybe when he hears about things that you can do for allergies, he
listens to them so he can help others.
Oh! You could be right.
It's always good to try to help others.
Now let's look at Mark's ideas.
I think he had another idea about rinsing.
That's right.
He thinks it might help if you just rinse your eyes.
You can rinse your whole body in the shower, but maybe you can just rinse your
eyes.
Well, that makes me think of something.
In science class, sometimes you use chemicals that are a little dangerous.
And you need to rinse your eyes if the chemicals get in them.
Oh, I remember that from school, too.
Maybe that's where Mark got the idea from.
And Carol has done it before.
But does it work, Katie?
Well, for a little while.
That means it helps for a short time, but not for very long.
If your eyes are really itchy, then you can...
Oh, hold on a second, Katie.
Um... itchy?
That sounds like one of our key words.
Well, yes, it does.
One of our key words is "itch."
If your eyes itch, you want to scratch them.
But you can also say that your eyes are itchy.
Well, it's great to know different ways to say something.
Just like it's good to know a few ways to help allergies.
So, sorry, what were you saying, Katie?
Well, if your eyes are really itchy, you can rinse them with cool water.
Care... Cool water is a little cold.
That feels really good on your eyes.
But Mark has another idea.
I think it's a little funny.
Carol can eat something spicy to help make her nose run.
And that will help her breathe better.
Who knows?
This might work.
But what are some other ways to use the word "run" like that, Nathan?
Oh, well, water runs in rivers.
And blood runs in your body.
There are a few ways to use that key word.
But a runny nose is a very common way to use it.
Sometimes our nose runs.
Hey, why don't we practice all of our key words now?
We want you to remember them.
So, here is today's first key word.
allergy.
allergy.
My allergies are bad today.
sneeze.
sneeze.
Ben's nose hurts. He is sneezing a lot.
itch.
itch.
My eyes itch because of my allergies.
shower.
shower.
Dan takes a shower at night.
run.
run.
I have a cold.
My nose is running.
OK, everyone, those are all the key words.
Did you remember them all?
Make sure that you practice them.
They're very helpful for you.
Right now, we're going to review all of our conversations from today.
(Music).
Excuse me.
You're sneezing a lot today, Carol.
I know. I have allergies.
They're always bad in the spring.
What are you allergic to?
I'm allergic to some kinds of flowers.
Lots of trees have flowers on them now.
I know.
I think that's why I'm sneezing.
Do you just sneeze?
No, my eyes itch, too.
What can you do for your allergies?
I take allergy medicine.
But it makes my nose hurt.
That's not good.
No.
But it's better than sneezing all the time!
I've heard a hot shower at night helps.
It does. It rinses the pollen off my skin and hair.
So you don't sneeze.
Yes. Then I can sleep and breathe better.
(Background Noise).
(Music).
(Background Noise).
Oh, no. Monkey Man!
What's wrong?
I can't breathe well.
Oh, no.
And my eyes are itchy.
Oh, no.
Oh, yeah. I have allergies.
Did you eat peanuts?
No, no, no. I didn't eat any peanuts.
Hmm.
Did you get stung by a bee?
No, I didn't get stung by a bee, Ginger.
Then what are you allergic to?
Ginger, I think...
I think I'm allergic to you.
To me?
Yeah.
Oh, no.
When I get close to you, I start to sneeze.
(Background Noise).
You're not allergic to me.
You're allergic to my flowers.
What flowers?
The flowers I have in by bag!
Oh!
(Background Noise).
We got to get rid of those.
Yeah. Or you.
(Music).
OK.
I have your health report here.
Everything looks good.
Just make sure you exercise a little more each week.
And don't forget to drink water every day.
Hello, my name is Marvin.
And I am a doctor.
My job is very important.
There are many kinds of doctors.
Bone doctors, brain doctors, baby doctors, and many other kinds.
People come to doctors to feel better when they are sick or hurt.
Doctors know the human body very well.
They know how to fix broken bones or make sick people well.
A doctor can tell people what kind of medicine they need to take.
Where can you find a doctor?
Often, you'll find a doctor, like me, at a hospital or clinic.
Both places are usually very busy.
People will always need a doctor for something.
So, doctors are very busy people.
I'm a doctor.
And this is my job.
(Music).
It's good to learn a little about doctors today.
If your allergies get really bad, you might need to visit the doctor.
We hope that most of you don't have allergies.
But we know that lots of people do.
If you do have allergies, I'm sure you know some things that you can do for
them.
Now, some people are just a little allergic to something.
Others are very allergic to something.
And those people have to be very careful.
And it's good for us to know how to help people like that, too.
So, we hope that this lesson has helped you understand allergies.
And we hope that you've learned some new English, too.
Now we hope that you'll come back tomorrow and learn even more with us.
We have a new lesson for you here on...
Let's Talk in English.
Goodbye.
