You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's time to learn some English and have a lot of fun today.
My name is Katie.
And we're glad that you joined us for our lesson.
Our new topic is "HEALTH."
And the title of our lesson is "What Are You Allergic to?"
"What Are You Allergic to?"
Now Nathan, what does the word "allergic" mean?
Well, sometimes your body fights things that it doesn't need to fight.
If your body is like that, we say that you are "allergic to something."
Hello, everyone.
My name is Nathan.
I'm so glad to spend this time with you.
Well, let's get started.
Find your magazine and turn to today's Read it!
You can follow along with Nathan right now.
Rob is eating a peanut butter sandwich.
Susie can't eat any.
She is allergic to peanuts.
If she eats them, she can't breathe well.
Jim is allergic to milk.
So he can't eat ice cream.
If he does, he feels terrible.
Mark is afraid of bees.
He is allergic to bee stings.
Ooh, I don't know if this lesson is going to be very fun.
It sounds like you can be allergic to a lot of things.
Yes, and lots of people are allergic to something.
Different people are allergic to different things.
But many people are also not allergic to anything.
If you are allergic to something, I guess you just need to learn how to live
without eating or using those things.
That would be OK.
Well, sure, lots of people do it.
So I think now is a good time to start with our key words.
Let's learn them from our word lady.
(Music).
Hello.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Hi, Rob.
What are you eating?
A peanut butter sandwich.
Do you want some?
Oh, no, Rob.
I can't eat peanuts.
Why not?
I'm allergic to peanuts.
That's too bad.
Yes.
I have to be careful.
What happens when you eat something with peanuts in it?
I can't breathe very well.
I have to take medicine.
(Music).
OK, Nathan, now I'm still not sure if I like this lesson.
Susie can't breathe very well because she's allergic to peanuts?
Well, yes, but only if she eats them.
I'm sure Susie is very careful about asking if peanuts are in the food that she
might eat.
Well, that's good.
It's really bad if you can't breathe well.
And I think I've heard of a lot of people who can't eat peanuts.
And some people can't even touch peanuts or be close to them.
But those people are very allergic to them.
Now friends, we keep saying that someone is allergic to something.
That's how we often use this word.
And Christina can show you a little bit more about that.
(Music).
(Chinese).
(Music).
Katie, I think it's too bad when people are allergic to things like peanuts.
Too bad?
What does that mean?
Bad is just bad.
How can it be "too bad"?
Well, when you feel sorry about something, you can say, "That's too bad."
Like:
You can't go on the trip with us? Oh, that's too bad.
Oh! I understand.
Like this:
You can't eat chocolate? That's too bad.
Yeah, that's what I mean.
I love peanuts.
So, I feel sorry for people that are allergic to them.
It's really too bad.
And if you can't eat peanuts, then you can't eat peanut butter, either.
Lots of people like peanut butter.
I often eat peanut butter on toast for breakfast.
So let's look at that key word a little more.
You know what peanuts are.
But isn't butter made from milk, Katie?
Well, sure.
But there're different kinds of butter.
You can just put a little butter all over bread with a knife.
And, what happens when you cook peanuts, then you crush them?
Oh, you get peanut butter!
And a Use It sentence.
So let's learn about that sentence right now.
Here's Elizabeth.
(Music).
It's time to take a look at the pattern:
"What happens when you do something?"
You could ask someone,
"What happens when you don't do your homework?"
or "What happens when you eat too much food?"
Friends, remember to use it.
(Music).
Thanks, Elizabeth.
Now we have more for you to learn.
Do you want some? Then you should watch this...
Calendar Phrase.
(Music).
Do you want some?
Do you want some?
(Chinese).
Is that your pizza?
Yeah. Do you want some?
Sure.
Thanks.
Are those your cookies?
Yeah. Do you want some?
Sure. Thanks.
Are those your drinks?
Yeah. Do you want some?
Yes!
Thanks!
Hey! You took all my snacks.
Yeah. Do you want some?
Yeah.
Do you want some?
Do you want some?
(Chinese).
(Music).
Hey, Jim.
Did you try the new ice cream place down the street?
No. I can't eat ice cream.
Why not?
I'm allergic to milk.
You can't have anything with milk in it?
No.
If I do, I feel really sick.
And my stomach really hurts.
That sounds terrible.
It is.
So I don't eat anything with milk in it.
Oh, no! Susie is allergic to peanuts.
But Jim is allergic to something, too.
Jim is allergic to milk.
I think that's too bad, too.
I know.
If you're allergic to milk, there are so many good things that you can't eat.
You can't have butter.
And you can't have cheese.
Oh, cheese is really good.
But you also can't have ice cream.
And everybody likes ice cream!
Don't you, Katie?
Oh, of course.
I like ice cream.
I love ice cream.
And there's a new ice cream place near LTE TV.
But Jim won't be trying it.
Oh, it's just down the street, too.
That's really close.
If something is down the street, you just need to walk straight on the street to
get to it.
So what is down the street from your house, everyone?
A restaurant, a convenience store, or maybe just some more houses?
Well, it's convenient to have lots of different places down the street from you.
But Jim can't go to the ice cream place because he can't have anything with milk
in it.
With milk in it?
That's a pattern that Christina wants to teach us today.
(Chinese).
(Music).
I think you can find a way to use that pattern soon.
It's very useful, like:
"I like to drink green tea with honey in it."
Or "My mom makes bread with bananas in it."
You don't have to talk about food and drinks when you use this pattern, either.
Right.
Like, um...
"That's a book with a lot of hard words in it."
But today, we do need to talk more about food.
Katie, do you know other people who are allergic to milk?
Oh, yeah.
There are lots of people who are allergic to milk, too.
They have to be careful because milk is in so many things.
I guess so.
They'll feel really sick if they have any milk, like Jim.
Well, people aren't only allergic to things that you eat or drink.
I think that you'll see what I mean soon.
But it's time for us to take a break right now.
So we will be right back.
