Welcome back to the show, everyone.
Today our lesson is called "What Are You Allergic to?"
If you are allergic to something, your body does not like it.
And people are allergic to different things.
Many people are allergic to things that you might eat or drink, like peanuts or
milk.
But you can be allergic to other things, too.
Let's see what I mean in Conversation C.
Oh, look.
There's a bee.
Where?
Is it near me?
No.
It's near the window.
Are you afraid of bees?
Yes! I am very allergic to bee stings.
Very allergic?
Yes.
Last time I got a bee sting, I had to go to the hospital.
I couldn't breathe!
That is bad.
OK, I'll catch the bee and put it outside.
Well, Mark is allergic to something, too?
But it's not something that you eat or drink.
It's something different.
Well, wait, Katie.
It is something that you can eat.
Huh? Mark is allergic to bee stings.
Are you crazy?
You can't eat those.
Well... Oh, well, I guess you're right.
People don't eat bee stings.
That's the part of the bee that can go into your skin and hurt you.
And when that happens, we say that the bee stings you.
Yes. A sting is part of the bee, but it's also something that the bee does to
people.
But, Nathan, did you mean that people can eat bees?
Yes.
I've eaten them before.
Well, I guess they were really baby bees, though.
And there are drinks with bees in them, too.
Oh, those do not sound good to me.
I don't think that they would sound good to Mark, either.
Did you like the... the baby bees, Nathan?
They were OK.
Oh, do you know what was with them?
There was another food together with the bees?
I have no idea.
Peanuts!
Huh, I like the peanuts better than the bees.
But I guess they wouldn't sound good to Susie, either.
Have you ever eaten bees, everyone?
Ugh.
I... I don't want to know.
We still need to learn some other things.
Like, how can Mark be very allergic to bee stings?
Do you know what that means, Nathan?
Oh.
Well, it means it is really bad if a bee stings Mark.
It's very dangerous for him.
You heard what he said.
He couldn't breathe the last time he got a bee sting.
So it's bad if Susie eats peanuts.
It makes it hard for her to breathe.
But it's really bad if Mark gets a bee sting.
Then he can't breathe at all.
You have the idea.
And we have the key words ready for some review.
I hope that you remember all of them.
But now is the time to go over them and say them together.
Here's the first key word.
peanut butter.
peanut butter.
Mary eats bread and peanut butter.
breathe.
breathe.
Everyone wants to breathe clean air.
ice cream.
ice cream.
Jeff eats ice cream in the summer.
terrible.
terrible.
Don't go out.
The weather is terrible.
afraid.
afraid.
Patty is afraid of dogs.
bee.
bee.
The bees fly around the flowers.
Did you remember all of today's key words?
I hope so.
Right now, let's review today's conversations.
(Music).
Hi, Rob.
What are you eating?
A peanut butter sandwich.
Do you want some?
Oh, no, Rob.
I can't eat peanuts.
Why not?
I'm allergic to peanuts.
That's too bad.
Yes.
I have to be careful.
What happens when you eat something with peanuts in it?
I can't breathe very well.
I have to take medicine.
(Music).
Hey, Jim.
Did you try the new ice cream place down the street?
No.
I can't eat ice cream.
Why not?
I'm allergic to milk.
You can't have anything with milk in it?
No.
If I do, I feel really sick.
And my stomach really hurts.
That sounds terrible.
It is.
So I don't eat anything with milk in it.
Oh, look.
There's a bee.
Where?
Is it near me?
No.
It's near the window.
Are you afraid of bees?
Yes!
I am very allergic to bee stings.
Very allergic?
Yes.
Last time I got a bee sting, I had to go to the hospital.
I couldn't breathe!
That is bad.
OK, I'll catch the bee and put it outside.
(Music).
Hi, Ginger.
Hello, Monkey Man.
Look, I'm going to make something for you.
Ooh.
What is it?
A sandwich.
Ooh, that's great.
I'm really hungry.
You're always hungry, Monkey Man.
True.
What kind of sandwich is it?
It's a peanut butter sandwich.
I can't eat that.
Why not, Monkey Man?
Because I'm allergic to peanut butter.
You are?
Mmhm.
It makes me sneeze.
Oh, too bad.
Sometimes I can't breathe well.
Oh, no, too bad.
So, I can't eat that peanut butter sandwich.
Yay! That's good.
Huh?
Because I'm going to eat it now.
I'll make it and eat it.
(Music).
Well, today, we have talked about some things that many people are allergic to.
Peanuts, milk, and bee stings.
It's important to know about these things in English.
It really is.
If you remember what you learned today, you may be able to help someone who is
allergic to something.
You can tell them, "Don't eat that, it has peanuts in it!"
Or maybe if you are allergic to bee stings, be careful.
I have seen bees here.
Or maybe you will need to tell people that you are allergic to something.
That is very important, too.
So come back to learn more with us about these things tomorrow in the next part
of our lesson.
We'll be right here on...
Let's Talk in English.
Bye-bye.
(Music).
