Thanks for joining us today here in the LTE TV studio.
We're going to have a great time learning some English.
My name is Nathan.
I'm one of your teachers here on the show.
Now today we have part two of our AROUND TOWN lesson.
This lesson is called A Table for Four.
A Table for Four.
Have you made a reservation before, Katie?
Yes, I have.
Sometimes in the United States, I had to make a lot of reservations when my
friends and I went to restaurants because they were always really busy.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie, and I am your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
OK, everyone.
Let's look at today's Read It together.
You can find it in your magazine and read it with Katie now.
Carol's guest is on his way to the restaurant.
Can the restaurant hold a table for Carol?
No. The Blue Fish is a popular restaurant.
There's only one open table.
And it is a table for two.
Carol, Mark, Rob and the guest are a party of four.
That's OK.
They can get great food and service at the Jungle Cafe!
Well, we are going to finish our lesson from yesterday.
Some people are going to try to eat at The Blue Fish.
But there is a problem.
Yes. It seems like something happened.
Maybe Megan could not change the reservation.
Remember, everyone?
Megan needed to see if Mark could join the lunch.
Well, I'm sure we all want to know what will happen.
But first, we need to learn our key words with Christina.
Hello.
(Chinese).
My guest is very late!
He called.
He is on his way.
We'll still be late for our reservation.
Perhaps the restaurant can hold the table.
I hope so.
But it's a very popular restaurant.
You can go to the restaurant now.
Your guest can meet you there.
That's a great idea.
Can you call him?
I'll do that right now.
Oh. The guest is very late.
They were supposed to eat at 1:00.
But he is not there yet.
But he is on his way.
Now "on your way" is a phrase we often use in English.
If you are on your way somewhere, you are going to that place right now.
Yes. If you're on your way somewhere, maybe you are driving to that place or
riding the bus or the subway.
But you will get there soon.
So it's good that the guest is on his way.
But if you're late to the reservation, sometimes the restaurant will not hold
the table for you.
And that's why Megan says, "Perhaps.".
Yes. Sometimes they will hold the table, and well... sometimes they will not.
Remember, perhaps can mean maybe.
Restaurants will not always hold tables for people.
And what does it mean to hold the table?
It means to keep the table for you.
A reservation holds your table for some time.
But if you are late and there are a lot of people there, they can't hold the
table for very long.
Yes. If it's a popular restaurant, many people will want to eat there.
So they need the people who have a reservation to be on time.
Now we have another good English phrase to talk about: meet someone there.
If you meet someone at a place, you go to that place and you see that person.
Yes. So the guest can meet Carol, Mark and Rob at the restaurant.
That will be the easiest thing to do for all of them.
I think.
So they need to let them know about this.
Megan needs to call him now.
And Nathan, we need to tell our friends about something really important.
Oh, you're right, because right now we have our Calendar Phrase.
I'll do that now.
I'll do that now.
(Chinese).
You should clean your room.
I'll do that now.
You should do your homework.
I'll do that now.
You should walk the dog.
I'll do that now.
Choose one thing to do first.
OK. I'll watch TV first.
I'll do that now.
I'll do that now.
(Chinese).
I'm sorry I'm late.
That's OK.
We were late, too.
But we lost our reservation.
Oh, no.
Can we still get a table?
If we wait, we can probably get a table.
I don't see any open tables.
There's an open table.
But that is a table for two.
We're a party of four.
Then let's eat at the Jungle Cafe.
Well, we start Conversation B with something nice you can say if you are late.
You should say: I'm sorry I'm late.
That way your friend knows that you feel bad for making them wait on you.
That's right, Katie.
It's not polite to be late.
Then people have to wait on you.
But everyone was late today.
That's right.
Because everyone was late, they lost their reservation.
Now what does that mean?
It means the restaurant didn't hold the table.
They gave the table to someone else.
So our friends from LTE TV lost the reservation.
What will they do now?
Well, if they wait, they can probably get a table.
Hey. Where have I heard that before?
Oh, I know.
It's our Use It sentence for today.
Let's learn about it.
(Music).
Hi, I'm Elizabeth.
Today we're looking at the pattern:
If we do something, we can do something else.
For example:
If we make some coffee, we can drink it later.
Or... If we bring a basketball, we can play after work.
Got it?
Then go use it!
Well, that is a great Use It sentence.
Thank you, Elizabeth.
So, friends, Carol thinks they can get a table if they wait.
But there aren't any open tables.
Katie, does that mean the tables open and close like... like stores?
No, Nathan.
If a table is open, that means that no one is sitting at the table.
If there are people sitting at the table, we say that the table is full.
Oh, I get it.
So all the tables at the restaurant are full.
There are no open tables.
Well, wait. There was one open table.
But it was a table for two.
And there are four people: Carol, Rob, Mark and the guest.
There are four people, but you can also say there is a party of four.
And Christina will tell you more about what that word "party" means here.
(Chinese).
Thanks, Christina.
So, friends, sometimes when we go to a restaurant or another place, we say that
we are a party.
That's important for you to remember.
And it's important that we take a break now.
We'll be right back,everyone.
