You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we're very glad that you joined us for our lesson today.
Our new topic is AROUND TOWN.
And the title of our lesson is A Table for Four.
A Table for Four.
Nathan, what place around town do you think that we will talk about today?
Oh, good question.
But when we talk about a table for four, or two, or ten, we are usually talking
about tables in a restaurant.
My name is Nathan, everyone.
It's great to learn some English together with you today.
Well, everyone, we need to get started.
So find your LTE magazine and turn to today's Read It.
You can read it along with Nathan right now.
Carol has an important guest today.
She can take him to lunch at a nice restaurant.
Megan makes the reservation.
She reserves a table for three at The Blue Fish.
The reservation is for 1 p.m.
Then Carol invites Mark.
Can Megan change the reservation?
She can try!
So, everyone, if you have a guest, it's important to treat them nicely.
And that's what Carol is doing.
She will take her guest to lunch today at a nice restaurant.
And that restaurant is called The Blue Fish.
But before she can go, she needs to do something first.
And she asks Megan for help.
But what does she need help with?
We'll find out later.
But first, let's learn about today's key words with our word lady, Christina.
Hello. (Chinese).
Megan, can you call The Blue Fish for me?
Sure, Carol.
Do you want to order food?
No. I want to make a reservation.
I have an important guest today.
OK. So I can make a reservation for two at...
Make a reservation for three at 1:00.
Rob will come, too.
OK.
I can call right now!
Now we have learned before about secretaries.
Megan is Carol's secretary, so she helps Carol with a lot of different jobs.
And Carol always asks for her help very nicely.
That's right.
Now she says, "Can you call The Blue Fish for me?" Let's practice.
Can you do something for me?
Can you help me cook dinner?
Can you bring the food to the table for me?
Or can you teach this class for me?
It's very polite to ask this question, especially if you say: Can you do
something for me, please?
Oh, and then you can say: Thank you.
Well, that is polite.
So Megan does a lot of things for Carol.
And one of those things is helping her get reservations at a restaurant.
Hmm. Have you ever done this, friends?
Sometimes we have to call a restaurant and tell them what time we want to eat.
That way, there is a table for you and your friends.
If a restaurant is busy, you need to reserve a space.
And reserve means to save a space.
You can see the word "reserve" in reservation.
Oh, that's true.
You often need to make reservations at busy restaurants because a lot of people
want to eat there.
If you don't make a reservation, there might be too many people at the
restaurant and then you can't eat there.
Or if you don't make a reservation, you will have to wait a really long time to
get a table, and that is never fun.
So when you make reservations, there are some things that you need to know.
You need to know how many people will eat together.
But what else is important, Katie?
Oh. Well, you need to know what time you want to go.
That way, the worker at the restaurant will tell you if that time is okay or
not.
That is right.
Both of those things are important when you're making a reservation.
But now, let's learn what you need to say when you make a reservation.
There are lots of important things to remember, how many people will go and what
time you want to be there.
And of course, you need to remember what restaurant that you're going to go to.
But how can we know what to say for making a reservation, Katie?
Well, I think that Christina can tell us about it right now.
So let's see what she has to say.
(Chinese).
Hi, Megan.
What are you doing?
I'm looking for the phone number for The Blue Fish.
Here it is.
Oh, I love The Blue Fish!
A lot of people like the food there.
Are you ordering lunch?
No. I'm reserving a table for Carol.
That's a good idea.
The Blue Fish is crowded at lunch.
(Music).
So when you make a reservation, you need to know a few things.
You need to know how many people will eat together and you need to know when.
But there's something else that you can't forget.
You need the phone number of the restaurant.
Of course!
You have to be able to call the restaurant.
So that's why Megan is looking for the phone number.
When you have to look for something, you do not know where that thing is.
That's right.
So Megan has to find that number.
But she did!
And she says, "Here it is." That means she found it.
And that means that now we can learn today's Calendar Phrase.
Here it is.
Here it is.
(Chinese).
I can't find my wallet.
Here it is.
I can't find my cellphone.
Here it is.
I can't find my book.
Here it is.
Wow! You found all my stuff.
Well, it was all right here!
Here it is.
Here it is.
(Chinese).
OK. Now Megan has the phone number.
She can call the restaurant.
They're... they are going to eat at a place called The Blue Fish.
Well, that sounds like it would be a good restaurant.
A lot of people like the food there.
I wonder what kind of restaurant it is.
Well, it's called The Blue Fish.
So maybe they have a lot of fish at this restaurant, Katie.
Oh, that's true.
That is a good kind of restaurant.
Now Megan is reserving a table for Carol.
Remember, if you reserve something, you save it for someone.
Right.
Megan wants The Blue Fish to save a table for Carol and her guest.
And that is a very good idea.
The Blue Fish is crowded at lunch, so it might be hard for them to get a table
there without a reservation.
Wait. The... The Blue Fish is crowded at lunch?
Hmm. I think we need to see what Christina has to say about that sentence right
now.
(Chinese).
So some places are crowded at sometimes.
I know the subway is crowded at 5 or 6 p.m. every day.
That's usually when I leave work.
And I really do not like riding the subway at 5:00 because there's nowhere to
sit or stand.
There's too many people.
Well, I know that the coffee shops are crowded at 8 in the morning.
That's when people are going to class or they're going to work, and everyone
needs some coffee to wake up.
Well, a lot of people do anyway, like Katie.
Yes, that's true. I always go to the coffee shop in the morning when it's
crowded.
OK, everyone, now we need to take a quick break.
So while we do, think about what we have learned so far.
We'll be back verysoon.
