Welcome to the show, everyone.
We're so glad to see you here today.
Let's have some fun.
My name is Nathan.
I'm one of your teachers here on Let's Talk in English.
Now today we have an eREPORT for you.
I always like our eREPORTs, and this one is called Let's Go to the Aquarium!
Let's Go to the Aquarium!
But what is an aquarium, Katie?
Well, that's a good question.
An aquarium is a place you can visit to see a lot of animals that live in the
water.
It's like a zoo for underwater animals; they're really fun to visit.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie, and I'm your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
I hope that you are excited to learn about today's lesson because aquariums are
really great places.
Nathan, have you been to an aquarium before?
Yes. I have been to an aquarium.
I've even been to the aquarium that eREPORT is visiting today.
Katie, have you been to any aquariums?
I have been to one aquarium before, but it was a really long time ago and it was
in the United States.
So I want to see what this aquarium has in our eREPORT.
And I think we should get started.
So let's learn our key words right now.
Hello.
(Chinese).
Hello, everyone.
My name is Gabe, and this is eREPORT.
And I am so excited about going to the aquarium today.
Now I think I'm ready.
I have my swimsuit, my towel, my goggles...
Hold on one second.
Yes?
What? You're kidding!
Oh. Well... I... I guess I won't be getting into the water today, which means I
won't be getting wet.
I see.
Oh, well.
You know what? That's OK.
We're still going to have fun learning something at the aquarium.
Let's go!
Welcome to the National Museum of Biology and Aquarium in the very south of
Taiwan.
This big aquarium is a wonderful place to learn about ocean water and the life
in it.
It has one of the largest collections of ocean life in Asia.
There are over 500 kinds of sea animals here.
An aquarium is usually a large place where visitors can see real ocean animals
and plants.
At an aquarium, you do not need to know how to swim or worry about getting wet.
Visitors stay dry and watch the animals behind glass windows.
There are often a lot of fish tanks and pools.
An aquarium is a safe place for visitors and the sea animals!
Now I'm remembering all the cool things at this aquarium.
Now it has been a long time since I went there.
Have you been to this aquarium, Katie?
No, I have not been to this aquarium, but I really want to go.
But Nathan, this is not just called an aquarium.
I think it had a much longer name with some hard words.
Oh, that is right.
We should probably talk about what this place is called.
First, it's a National Museum.
If something is national, it is important in its nation or belongs to its
nation.
And a nation is a country.
You know, this makes me think of national parks in the United States.
They are big important parks that many people in the U.S. visit.
Yes, that's another good way to use the word national.
But this is a museum - a place where you can go to look around and learn about
something.
And there are all kinds of museums.
But many of them teach you about history, art or culture.
And this one teaches you all about science.
Yes. We can learn that in the next part of the name of this place.
National Museum of Marine Biology.
Biology is science about life, like animals, plants and people.
And marine means about the ocean.
So you can go to this place to learn about ocean life.
Hey. Ocean and life are both key words for us today.
Oh, you're right.
I guess those really are important words for today's lesson.
You can learn about ocean life in this place.
But you can also see ocean life there.
And I think that we will see very soon.
But there are a few more things to talk about from this conversation, like:
What is "the very south of Taiwan"?
Well, if something is in the very south, you cannot go more south.
So the aquarium is very far south in Taiwan.
Can you think of another way to use "very" like that, Katie?
Well, I think so.
Like this:
We hiked to the very top of the mountain and we could not go any higher.
And now we're at the very end of this part of our eREPORT, so let's go on to the
next part.
Wow! Look at this place.
It's so big!
This aquarium is so big.
It will take a long time to see everything there is.
You know what?
I think I need a map.
Where should I begin?
I mean, there's the Coral Kingdom, there's the Waters of Taiwan and... and the
Waters of the World.
How can I decide what to see?
I can't decide.
I'm going to see them all.
And you know what?
I'm going to start right over here.
I'm so excited.
Water covers over seventy percent of the Earth.
That's a lot of water.
In ocean waters, there are many kinds of animals and plants.
This aquarium allows visitors to see many things under the water.
Visitors can walk in underwater tunnels and look at the water and animals all
around them!
This is a very unusual place.
You might see someone swimming underwater in a special swimsuit.
These people clean the tanks for the fish and visitors.
Visitors can also learn about kelp and seaweed and other beautiful coral in
special parts of the aquarium.
And of course, there are lots of fish.
Visitors can almost feel like they are in the ocean.
Behind the glass, visitors can see sharks and many other kinds of fish swimming.
There are also beluga whales, jellyfish and stingrays.
You can also touch animals here.
There is a special pool for starfish, crabs and other animals that you can feel
with your fingers.
(Music).
Oh, wow. I forgot how many sea animals you can see at an aquarium.
Our eREPORT talks about so many different kinds.
Well, sure.
That's why it says, "There are many kinds of plants and animals in the ocean
waters." Wait, waters?
That's weird.
No one says waters with an S.
Well, that's not really true, Nathan.
We don't say it very often, but you can say waters like that.
It means the different parts of the ocean.
Hmm.
I see.
The ocean is a big place and it has many different parts.
And the different parts might have different kinds of animals.
That's right.
And some parts of the ocean, you can see big whales coming up to the top of the
water.
In other parts, you can see colorful fish swimming in groups.
And in other parts, you can...
Katie, I need to stop you there.
You used a very important pattern twice.
I think Christina should explain it a little more.
(Chinese).
Well, there really are many ways that you can use that pattern.
Like: We see our friends at LTE TV doing many different things during the year.
And the things they do help us with our English.
And this eREPORT can help, too.
Now why don't we play a little picture game to help us remember some words?
Oh, that sounds fun!
Let's do it!
Great!
I will show you a picture of something in the sea that we heard in our eREPORT.
You tell me what it is, Katie.
Here is the first one.
Oh. Oh, I know.
It's a starfish.
That was an easy one because it looks like a star.
Very, very good.
Now let's try one that is a little bit harder.
OK.
Let's get the next picture.
Oh. Oh, that is a little harder.
There's no good way to remember it, but it is called coral.
Uh, you knew it.
Great!
But how about one more hard one?
OK.
Oh, this one is harder.
But I think it's called a bezuga fish.
Well, that's close, but it's a beluga whale.
Whales are like big fish.
But actually, belugas are much smaller than most whales.
Oh, well, that's good to know.
That was some good practice.
But now I need a break.
We'll be right back for more of our eREPORT in just a few minutes.
So don't go away.
(Music).
