You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we hope that you're ready to learn a lot today.
Our topic is still WEATHER.
So we will continue with our lesson from yesterday, A Rainy Day.
A Rainy Day.
Nathan, what are some problems you can have on a rainy day?
Oh. Well, we talked about that yesterday in our lesson.
You could have some puddles on a rainy day or maybe some leaks, too.
Those are not good things.
Hello, everyone.
My name is Nathan, and it's great to learn some English together with you today.
Well, let's get started.
Find your magazine and turn to today's Read It.
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Rainy days can be good.
The air smells fresh and sometimes there are rainbows.
There are many things to do, too.
Megan likes to sit under a blanket and read.
Rob likes to listen to music and play video games.
Rainy days are great for playing board games, too.
Stormy nights are great for scary movies.
Mark has a favorite activity, too.
He likes sleeping!
Oh, this is great!
Yesterday was like the bad news about rainy days.
And today, we have some good news about rainy days.
Good.
I like good news much more than bad news.
Really, Nathan?
You don't like bad news more?
No.
I... I think most people like good news much more.
But I don't see how rainy days can be good.
I don't like them.
Well, I think that we will find out how they are good.
But first, let's learn our key words from our word lady.
Hello.
(Chinese).
Thanks for talking with me, Julie!
No problem, Jim.
It rains a lot in April.
Do you like rainy days?
I do! I love rainy days.
I love the fresh smell after it rains.
What is your favorite thing about rainy days?
Rainbows!
They're so pretty!
They sure are!
We may see one soon!
Well, Jim and his guest are talking out in the rain.
They must really like the rain.
Well, Julie doesn't just like rainy days, she loves them.
I just don't understand that.
Nathan, just because you don't like rainy days doesn't mean that all the other
people are the same.
There are lots of things to like about rainy days.
Oh, no, no. I understand that... a little.
But why would you love rainy days?
I mean you... you can't marry the rain.
That's just silly..
Oh. That's not what she means, Nathan.
Sometimes when we say that we love something, it just means that we really like
it.
Hmm, but love is a very strong word, Katie.
Like Romeo loved Juliet, and Jack loved Rose.
And Bella loves Edward, and...
Yes, yes, yes.
Yes, we often say that we love people.
But it's still very common to use the word "love" differently.
I think that you do, too.
You tell me that you love movies or songs and you really like those.
Oh, but that's... Oh. Well, I see.
And I guess there are some foods that I love and... and places that I love, and
books I love.
I do say that I love things.
You sure do.
And I say that I love things, too.
Eh, that's also a funny way to use "sure." You sure do or they sure are.
That's like saying "you really do" or "they really are.".
That's right, Nathan.
You sure do pay attention to how we use words.
Well, I'm an English teacher.
It's my job.
But thanks for talking with me about all my questions.
I know I ask about a lot of things sometimes.
Oh, that's OK.
We learn things by asking questions.
And I have a question for you now.
What is your favorite thing about teaching English?
Oh. That's not an easy question.
But I think I like helping people understand each other.
And I know that Christina can help us understand that question a little more,
too.
(Chinese).
Is it still raining?
Yes! It's rained every day this week!
Rainy days can be fun.
You can do many different things on rainy days.
That's true.
What kind of things do you guys do on rainy days?
I love to sit under a blanket and read a good book.
Rainy days are good for listening to music, too.
I'm starting to see why some people like rainy days.
It gives them time to do some things that they may not do often.
That's right, Nathan.
Rob is usually very busy.
But rainy days give him some free time.
Rainy days are very good for that.
Now Rob thinks rainy days are good for listening to music.
Megan thinks they are good for reading.
What do you think they are good for, Katie?
Well, I think that rainy days are good for learning more English.
You can watch our show or practice your English at home.
But Christina also wants to tell you more about using that pattern.
(Chinese).
Rainy days are good for doing some things at home or other things inside.
I think rainy days are good for seeing a movie.
Yeah, you have the idea, Nathan.
You can't do much outside in the rain, so you can find something to do inside
instead.
Yeah, but it's rained every day this week.
It's good to spend some time outside.
Yes. It's not very fun when it rains that much.
Actually, let's look at that sentence:
It's rained every day this week!
What does it mean, Nathan?
Hmm. Well, first, we need to know what "it's" means here.
That will help.
Do you know what it means, Katie?
Well, sure.
It's means it is.
We use that word all the time.
Hmm. So it is rained every day?
Are you sure, Katie?
Oh, OK. This time "it's" means it has.
Remember that, friends.
It's can mean it is for something right now or it has for something that has
happened before.
So it has rained every day this week.
This week there has been rain every day.
OK.
Are you guys ready for a break?
I think it's about time for one.
Don't worry, girls.
Nathan is not just asking the boys.
Guys usually means boys.
But when you say "you guys," it can be both.
Of course.
Boys and girls, it's time for a break.
We'll see you guys in justa minute.
