You're watching Let's Talk in English.
This is the show where we learn a lot of great English and we have a lot of fun.
My name is Katie, and we're glad that you joined us for today's lesson.
Our topic is still SPORTS.
And we have part two of our lesson - Let's Play Baseball!
Let's Play Baseball!
Nathan, do you like watching baseball?
Oh, sometimes.
But I don't watch a lot of baseball.
But I really like to watch baseball movies.
I think those are a lot of fun.
My name is Nathan, everyone.
I am your other teacher here on Let's Talk in English.
OK, everyone, let's get started.
So find your magazine and turn to today's Read It.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
It's time for the game.
Megan can be the pitcher.
Rob will play in the infield.
What position will Mark play?
He will play in the outfield with Jim.
When someone hits the ball, they should catch it.
Then they throw it to first base.
Uh-oh. The ball hits Mark.
But Jim catches it.
The team wins its first victory in years!
Baseball is all about teamwork.
Well, this will be an exciting day.
It's time for the game.
I hope that we can watch a little of it.
Yeah. Me, too.
And I think we will.
But what does it mean when we say that it's time for something?
Well, if it's time for something, we have come to the right time to do
something.
Parents might tell their children that it's time for bed.
Or it's time to talk to our word lady today.
Hello.
(Chinese).
We need to choose our positions.
That's a good idea.
What position should we play?
Megan can be our pitcher.
OK, she's good.
What position do you want to play?
I usually play in the outfield.
OK. That sounds good to me.
I'd like to play in the infield.
How about you, Jim?
I can play in the outfield, too.
Well, that conversation was all about positions.
That was one of today's key words, right?
Yes, it was.
And I think we should talk about that word a little more today.
Different sports have different positions.
But let's think of some baseball positions, Nathan.
Sure.
Another key word we heard was pitcher.
That's a position in baseball.
The pitcher throws the ball to someone who tries to hit it.
Oh, and that's another position - batter.
Everyone gets to play that position in baseball at some time.
And another position is catcher.
They catch the ball that the pitcher throws.
And the catcher stays at home base.
That's where you run from and run to in baseball.
But what are the people at the other bases called?
Oh, let me think.
I know this.
They're called... they're called basemen.
Yes. Now those are all infield positions.
People with those positions can be called infielders.
The infield is inside the bases.
Oh. So the infield is inside the bases and then the outfield is outside the
bases.
If people have positions in the outfield, can we call them outfielders?
You can.
Good job, Katie.
You're good.
Thanks, Nathan.
I'm glad that you think I'm a good person.
Oh. I don't mean that you're a good person, Katie.
What?
You think I'm a bad person?
No, no, no, no. no. That's not what I mean, either.
But when I say that you're good, I... I meant that you're good at understanding
the positions.
Really?
So you don't think I'm a bad person?
Well, of course, you're not a bad person.
Don't you tell your friends that they're good when they... when they do
something well?
Hmm, I guess so.
Like when my friends sing well or they get a good test grade.
Good. I'm glad you understand.
Well, I think now is a good time to move on to Conversation B to learn some more
things together.
Let's play!
OK, Jim.
When someone hits the ball, we need to catch it.
I know.
Then we need to throw it to first base.
I know.
Look, Megan is throwing the ball.
If you need any help, I'll be right here.
That guy just hit the ball.
Here it comes!
I've got it! I've got it...
(Music).
Hey! What, what... you, you can't end it there.
We want to see if they can catch the ball.
Come on!
Nathan, this is only Conversation B.
We haven't seen Conversation C yet.
Yup. But what if we don't find out what happened?
I mean the ball was coming and... and Mark says "I've got it..." and...
And then what?
Well, then we... we talk about what "I've got it" means.
OK?
But I really want to know...
When Mark... when Mark says, "I've got it," he meant that he would catch the
ball.
He was going to get it.
Can we use that sentence at other times, Nathan?
OK! OK. I guess we say "I've got it" when different things are coming to us that
we can get, like balls and other sports.
Or if you ask a friend for their phone number, you can say "I've got it" when
they call you or text their number.
Got it?
OK. So now would be a great time to go to Conversation C.
So let's...
Nope, nope.
We still have a lot to talk about, like the phrase: throw something to someone.
And Christina can help us with that right now.
(Chinese).
You can also throw things to a place.
In baseball, you often need to throw to bases.
Yeah. You need to throw the baseball to a base before the runner can get there.
Now the bases have easy names.
Nathan, what are they?
Oh, well, they are first base, second base and third base.
But there's also home base, remember?
We usually call it home plate.
Well, Nathan, thanks for all your help with the baseball words.
Friends, if you want help with English... with English words, we're happy to
help.
And if you want to know what happens next, here it comes.
Let's watch Conversation...
It won't work, Nathan.
But he did just use our Calendar Phrase.
Here it comes.
Here it comes.
(Chinese).
Look. The player hit the ball.
Here it comes.
It's a great hit.
Here it comes.
It's coming fast.
Here it comes.
Get ready and catch it.
Here it comes!
There it goes.
Here it comes.
Here it comes.
(Chinese).
That's a great phrase to know.
Thank you, Calendar Phrase.
OK.
Now it's time to see what happened, right, Katie?
Actually, it's time for us to take a break.
Why?
But don't worry, we'll be back very soon.
