Welcome back, everyone.
Today we were still talking about baseball.
And one of the things we learned was the baseball positions.
Do you remember any of them?
There were some good ones.
Yes, there were.
But what I remember was at the end of Conversation B, the baseball was coming to
Mark and Jim.
And maybe they were going to catch it.
But we don't know what happened.
So let's go to Conversation C and find out.
What a great game!
Yeah, and I can't believe we won!
That's our first victory in years!
And you made a great catch, Jim.
Thanks, but Mark helped.
I missed the ball.
I didn't help.
Sure you did.
I only caught the ball after it hit your face.
That's what baseball is all about!
What?
Teamwork!
(Music).
Well, Nathan, we didn't see what happened.
But at least we know what happened.
Yes. I think Mark tried to catch the baseball with his face.
And now we've all learned that that doesn't work.
And it hurts.
I guess so.
But we also learned about something more important.
Teamwork.
Great word.
Teamwork is working together to get something done.
Teamwork is really useful.
But how did we learn about teamwork today?
Oh, you remember.
Mark helped Jim catch the ball.
It hit Mark first and then Jim caught it.
Yeah, but I think Mark was trying to catch it himself and he missed it.
Yeah. But remember, Jim said he wasn't very good at catching.
If Mark didn't try first, Jim probably would not have caught the ball.
Hmm, you might be right, Katie.
And teamwork is really important.
On a baseball team, you need people that are good at every position.
That's right.
You need people that are good at catching, throwing, batting and running.
And then they all need to help each other to win.
Now like we say in English, there is no "I" in team.
The word "team" doesn't have an "i" in it.
But it really means that you can't just think about yourself when you are on a
team.
So you need to work together.
And that's what baseball is all about.
And I think that Christina has more to say about that.
(Chinese).
We want to be your friend and help you improve your English.
That's what this show, Let's Talk in English, is all about.
So do you think that we help them do that today, Katie?
Well, sure we did.
And that's like saying I'm sure that we did.
And I'm sure because we talked about a lot of good key words and phrases.
We learned all about the different positions in baseball, like a pitcher or a
batter or a baseman.
Oh, right.
And we learned some good action words like hit and throw.
Those are useful for baseball, too.
Yes, they are.
So now let's review all of those key words.
The first key word for today is:
pitcher.
pitcher.
The pitcher has the ball.
position.
position.
I don't have a position to play yet.
hit.
hit.
Ellen hit the ball with the bat.
throw.
throw.
Throw the ball to me!
base.
base.
I am on second base.
victory.
victory.
I like winning.
Victory is great!
OK, everyone, those are all the key words that we have for you today.
Let's keep learning and review today's conversations.
We need to choose our positions.
That's a good idea.
What positions should we play?
Megan can be our pitcher.
OK, she's good.
What position do you want to play?
I usually play in the outfield.
OK. That sounds good to me.
I'd like to play in the infield.
How about you, Jim?
I can play in the outfield, too.
Let's play!
OK, Jim.
When someone hits the ball, we need to catch it.
I know.
Then we need to throw it to first base.
I know.
Look, Megan is throwing the ball.
If you need any help, I'll be right here.
That guy just hit the ball.
Here it comes!
I've got it! I've got it...
What?
Teamwork!
(Music).
Play ball!
Ginger, what do you mean - play ball?
That's how you start a baseball game. Play ball!
Well, you're right.
But we can't play ball.
Why not?
We have a ball and a bat and a baseball glove.
I see that.
But I don't see any players.
Look at me.
What do you see?
I see a monkey holding a baseball bat.
Yes. I'm a baseball player.
Ginger, you're holding the bat upside down.
Oops. Well... hmm, what position can I play?
I'm sorry, Ginger, you're going to be left out.
Oh, left outfield? Yeah.
No... Left out.
You can't play.
Left out?
Yeah.
Very funny. Very funny. Huh!
Romeo, Romeo.
Oh. Where are you, Romeo?
Coming.
Is that you, Romeo?
Oh...
Juliet, my love. I am here.
Oh, Romeo... Romeo, why do you have two suitcases with you?
Oh, because I must leave, dear.
It's time for my vacation.
Oh, no!
Romeo, do you really need to...
When... when you go...
I mean... you should...
Oh. Oh, my stars, I wish there was someone to help me speak English.
There is someone to help.
Shakespeare, is that you?
No, no, no. I am not Shakespeare.
I am Super Sentence Man, and I am here to help you with your super sentence.
You want to say: If you leave, I'll cry.
Oh. If you leave, I'll cry.
Perfect!
The super sentence is: If something, I'll do something.
Can you give me another example?
OK, if I must.
If Romeo leaves, I'll die.
If Romeo leaves, I'll die. Very good.
Now what about you, Romeo?
Can you give me a super sentence?
Well, I... I don't have much time.
Uh. If I keep waiting, I'll miss my flight.
So...
If I keep waiting, I'll miss my flight.
Brilliant!
Always remember, a super sentence every day will make your English great.
Oh, no.
Where, where was I?
Oh. Yes. Romeo, if you leave, I'll cry.
Don't be silly, my love.
We have our whole lives together.
This vacation is only for a month... or two... or three.
Goodbye! Oh, Romeo!
Well, before we go for today, we think that you need to learn something special.
A song.
Yeah.
If you go to a baseball game in the United States, you might need to sing this
song.
So listen carefully.
If you know this song, you can sing with us now.
Here we go.
Take me out to the ball game.
Take me out to the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack.
I don't care if I never get back.
Because it's root, root, root for the home team.
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's 1, 2, 3 strikes you're out at the old ball game!
Wow. Well, that is a great song for baseball.
We hope you enjoyed it.
Friends, we will see you next time right here on...
Let's Talk in English.
Bye-bye.
(Music).
