Hello, everyone.
Thank you for joining us today.
We're going to have a great time learning some English together.
My name is Nathan, and I'm one of your teachers here on the show.
Now today we have a SPORTS lesson for you.
And this lesson is called Let's Play Baseball!
Let's Play Baseball!
Have you ever played on a baseball team, Katie?
Oh. Not a baseball team, but I have played on a softball team before.
That's kind of like baseball.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie, and we're really glad that you joined us for this lesson
today.
Right now it's time to practice our reading again.
Look in your magazine and find today's Read It.
You can read it with Katie right now.
Mark and Rob are getting ready to play baseball.
Their game is tomorrow.
Jim wants to play, too.
He can't catch very well, but that's OK.
This game is just for fun.
Does Rob have everything they need?
Yes. He has bats, gloves and a baseball.
He has uniforms and baseball caps, too.
But that's not all they need.
They need practice.
Well, this sounds like it will be an exciting lesson because LTE TV has another
sport's team.
Not long ago, some of our friends were playing a different sport.
You remember that, Katie?
Of course I do.
In March, they had a basketball team.
It was a new team, but they won their first game.
Oh. Maybe they will win again.
But right now we need to look at our key words first.
Let's go talk to Christina.
Hello.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Hey, guys.
What are you doing?
We're getting ready for the baseball game!
What baseball game?
Every year we play baseball against the Talk Time radio station.
And every year they win!
This year's game is tomorrow.
Wow. Can I play, too?
Of course.
Everyone at the station can play.
We need help if we want to win.
Oh. So the baseball team is not a new team.
LTE TV plays baseball against a radio station every year.
So they must've been playing for a few years now.
Yes. They play against Talk Time radio station.
Now when you are against someone else, you try to stop them or you don't like
what they do.
Right.
Some people are against other people and that's not always good.
But if you play against someone, they are on one team and you are on the other
team.
Both teams play in the same game.
But please remember that when you play against another team, it's just for the
game.
You are not against the people on the other team.
Good point.
You should still be kind to people on other teams.
But when you're playing a game and you're very excited, it can be easy to forget
that.
But when you play sports, you are really just playing games.
And games should always be fun.
So everyone should help keep these games fun.
But you know, Katie, sports are not always fun.
Well, that's true because sometimes people get angry or they...
Oh, well, well, maybe.
But that's not what I mean now.
Sometimes it takes a lot of hard work to play sports.
And work is not always fun.
Oh. Yes, that is true.
You have to practice a lot to get ready to play games.
Oh. I think that "get ready" is a great phrase for us to learn about.
I know a song called Get Ready.
It goes, "Ah... So get ready. Get ready." It's like a disco song. Yeah.
So get ready.
That means that you should make yourself ready for something.
When can we use this phrase, Katie?
Well, we can use this phrase when a race is going to start.
You can tell the runners to get ready because they're about to start running.
Oh, yeah.
Or if your friends have a big test soon, tell them to get ready for it.
And I know one more.
When it's time for Conversation B, we can tell you to get ready.
So...
Get ready.
So you like baseball, Jim?
I love baseball, but I can't catch very well.
That's OK.
You don't have to be really good to play.
This game is just for fun.
Fun?
Losing is not fun!
We lose every year.
Oh, Mark. Be a good sport.
OK.
Do you have a baseball glove, Jim?
No, I don't.
Then you can use this one.
So Mark has an extra glove for Jim to use.
That's great.
Now he should have all the things he needs to play on the team.
OK, Katie, I have a question.
When Conversation B started, Rob said, "So you like baseball?".
And when you started talking, you said, "So Mark has an extra glove.".
OK.
So... So what's your question, Nathan?
My question is, why did you both start by saying "So"?
Oh. Well, after someone says something, you can use "so" to say what you think.
Jim asked if he could play baseball with him.
Then Mark said, "So you like baseball?".
Hmm. So that's how you use it.
Oh. Well, I just used it, too.
Anyway, let's look at Jim's answer to the question.
He loves baseball, but he can't catch very well.
Very well?
Does that mean he's not very good at catching?
Right.
If you do something well, you are good at it.
But if you don't do something very well, you aren't very good at it.
Well, if Jim can't catch very well, I hope he can run well or hit the ball well.
It... it's OK.
You don't have to be really good to play.
Oh. Is that sentence hard to understand?
Well, I know someone who can help.
(Chinese).
Sometimes we just do things for fun.
You know, girls just want to have fun.
We might go shopping for fun or get our hair washed for fun.
They're things that we like.
Right.
And we just want to have a good time.
So maybe we read for fun.
Or some of us draw or write for fun.
And others play sports for fun.
But when you play sports, you might lose.
And losing is not really fun.
It's more fun to win.
But Use It sentences are always fun.
So let's learn about this one right now.
(Music).
Today we're looking at a very useful pattern:
Doing something is not something.
You could say: Swimming is not easy.
Or... Writing is not hard.
Learning English is not hard, either.
That is as long as you use it.
Well, thank you, Elizabeth.
We'll do our best to use it.
For now, it's time to take a break.
We'll be right back.
