You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we hope that you're excited about our lesson today.
We have a new topic, and that topic is CAREER.
And the title of our lesson is An Artist.
An Artist.
Nathan, what does an artist do?
Well, an artist makes art.
But art can be many different things like beautiful pictures or movies or even
buildings.
My name is Nathan, everyone.
I'm your other teacher here on Let's Talk in English.
OK, we need to get ready for our lesson.
So find your magazine and turn to today's Read It.
You can follow along with Nathan right now.
Meet Mei-Lian Huang.
She is a disabled woman and an amazing artist.
She paints beautiful paintings!
Mei-Lian has trouble getting around and can't talk well.
She's very smart, though.
She worked hard at home and in school, and she succeeded!
She got a Ph.D. in art!
Now Mei-Lian is a famous artist.
Wow. We are going to learn about an amazing woman today, everyone.
Mei-Lian is an artist.
But she has some problems.
She is disabled.
That means she has a problem with her body.
She can't talk well and has trouble getting around.
But that does not stop her from being a great artist.
That is so great.
And she even got her Ph.D.
A Ph.D. is something you get after you go to school for a really long time.
That means Mei-Lian is really smart.
And you're all smart, too.
So let's go learn our key words right now with Christina.
Hello.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Hi, Megan.
Hi, Carol.
What are you looking at?
We're looking at a book about art.
It has pictures of paintings by a special woman.
Those are beautiful paintings.
But why is the woman special?
She is disabled.
She can't talk or walk well.
But she can really paint!
Wow! That's great!
Her story is really interesting.
It's all in this book!
So today we will talk about an artist.
An artist is someone who makes things.
They often make paintings which is a key word today.
Nathan, do you know any famous artists?
Hmm. I know of a man named Van Gogh.
He did a painting called The Starry Night.
It's really famous.
Do you know this painting, friends?
Now you can find art and paintings in a museum.
Or sometimes you can look at books about art.
That's what Megan and Carol are doing.
That's right.
And the book has pictures of paintings by a special woman.
I think I know who that special woman is.
But before we find out, let's learn about how to use the word "by" with
Christina.
(Chinese).
Thank you, Christina.
So now you know how to use the word "by." We say things are done by someone.
Like: This song was written by Julie.
Or... This book is by Mark Twain.
But these paintings are by a special woman.
But why is this woman special?
Because she is disabled.
Remember, if you are disabled, you have a problem with your body.
We learned that she can't talk or walk well.
Now people can be disabled in different ways.
Maybe someone can't see with their eyes.
Or someone else might not be able to hear anything.
But the artist we are talking about can really paint.
She can make beautiful paintings and that's really cool.
Yeah, it is cool.
It must be hard for her because she is disabled.
But she did not let that stop her.
It's always interesting when people do amazing things, even when they are
disabled.
I really like to read about those kinds of stories.
Me, too.
And her story is really interesting.
That's what Megan says.
And it's all in the books that they're reading.
Hey, it's all in the book.
That's great.
But it's also our Calendar Phrase.
It's all in this book.
It's all in this book.
(Chinese).
What happened to your family?
It's all in this book.
What happened to your friends?
It's all in this book.
What happened to your dog?
It's all in this book.
What book?
Oh, no!
What happened to my book?
It's all in this book.
It's all in this book.
(Chinese).
(Music).
The artist's name is Mei-Lian Huang.
When she was born, a doctor wasn't careful and hurt her.
So she has trouble talking and getting around.
When she was young, other children didn't like her.
She didn't have any friends.
But Mei-Lian was smart.
Her parents knew that.
She worked really hard to learn to do things.
And she succeeded!
The artist we are learning about is Mei-Lian Huang.
Now we find out how she became disabled.
Katie, how did it happen?
Well, Conversation B says that when she was born, a doctor wasn't careful and
hurt her.
That's terrible.
Poor Mei-Lian.
That is terrible.
And because her doctor hurt her, she has trouble talking.
If you have trouble with something, it's hard for you.
What do you have trouble with, Katie?
Well, I have trouble with math.
And sometimes I have trouble talking to new people.
Both of those things are hard for me to do.
So Mei-Lian has trouble talking and getting around.
Getting around is a great phrase.
We use it in English a lot.
Let's go to Christina and see what she has to say about it.
(Chinese).
OK. So how do you get around?
Do you walk a lot to class?
Or do you get around by driving a car or taking the subway?
There are many ways to get around.
But Mei-Lian has trouble getting around.
She does not walk well.
And something else kind of bad happened to her.
When she was young, other children did not like her.
Eh, that's our Use It sentence.
Let's go to Elizabeth right now.
(Music).
Today we're going to look at the pattern:
When someone was / were young, something happened.
For example: When my sister was young, she loved to play with her kitten.
Aww!
Or... When we were young, we didn't have homework.
Friends, remember to use it.
Well, thanks, Elizabeth.
So, friends, what did you do when you were young?
Make sure you practice using that sentence.
Well, Mei-Lian did not have any friends when she was young.
I think that would've been sad, Katie.
You're right, Nathan.
But Mei-Lian is smart and so she worked really hard.
And here's the best part.
Yes. She succeeded.
So she was able to learn how to do things.
That's great.
Yes, it really is great.
Have you ever succeeded at something, everyone?
What was it?
Maybe you try something new and it was going to be hard, but you still
succeeded.
Try to answer that question while we take a short break.
We'll be right back afterthis.
