Thank you for joining us again.
Today for our CAREER lesson, we are talking about an artist.
An artist makes pretty things.
And we're talking about a special artist, Mei-Lian, and she is disabled.
So she has some trouble getting around.
That means it's hard for her to walk or go places.
And she cannot talk very well, either.
But she's a great artist.
Let's learn more about her in Conversation C.
When she was young, a teacher saw her paintings.
The teacher said, "If you practice every day, I believe you can become a great
artist.".
And Mei-Lian practiced!
She worked hard for years.
She got a Ph.D. in art in the US!
Now Mei-Lian is a famous artist.
She also teaches art classes in Taiwan!
Wow! What an amazing artist!
So, even though Mei-Lian is disabled, she's still a great artist.
That is amazing!
It is.
I like learning stories about people who do cool things even when their life is
hard.
And here is a sentence that's like our Use It sentence.
When she was young, a teacher saw her paintings.
And the teacher liked her paintings.
That's right.
She says, "If you practice every day, I believe you can become a great artist.".
In English, we often say that we believe in people.
Yes, we do.
To believe in someone means that we think that person can succeed in what they
do.
It's great to believe in someone.
You can cheer them on and say "I believe in you," or "You can do it.".
But it's also important to believe in yourself.
Believe in your dreams.
Then you can succeed.
And I think Mei-Lian believed in herself.
I think so, too.
She believed in herself and she practiced her painting.
She worked hard for years.
What do you work hard at, friends?
Nathan, what do you work hard at?
Well, I work hard writing for the show.
It's not always easy.
It's important to work hard, everyone.
Work hard, and you will do well at something or at your job.
And Mei-Lian work so hard that she got a Ph.D. in art in the United States.
So she went to school for a very long time.
But that is great.
Some people study a long time to get a Ph.D.
You can get a Ph.D. in different things.
Yes. Maybe you really like to study books.
You can get a Ph.D. in books or languages.
Or you could get a Ph.D. in medicine and be a doctor.
So now even though she is disabled, she is a famous artist.
"Famous" means a lot of people know who she is.
That's right.
Well, right now I think that we need to do one more thing and that is reviewing
our key words.
Say them with us.

Hi, Megan.
Hi, Carol.
What are you looking at?
We're looking at a book about art.
It has pictures of paintings by a special woman.
Those are beautiful paintings.
But why is the woman special?
She is disabled. She can't talk or walk well.
But she can really paint!
Wow! That's great!
Her story is really interesting.
It's all in this book!
The artist's name is Mei-Lian Huang.
When she was born, a doctor wasn't careful and hurt her.
So she has trouble talking and getting around.
When she was young, other children didn't like her.
She didn't have any friends.
But Mei-Lian was smart.
Her parents knew that.
She worked really hard to learn to do things.
And she succeeded!
(Music).
Hey, Monkey Man.
Look what I'm making.
Yeah. A big mess.
No. I'm painting.
It's art.
Oh. Well, yeah.
So what do you think?
It looks um.... colorful.
Thank you. I am an artist.
You are an artist?
Yes. I tried and I succeeded.
Well...
This is an amazing painting.
Well...
And I am an amazing artist.
Well... hmm...
Well what, Monkey Man?
You are an amazing monkey.
Yeah. And an amazing artist, monkey artist. Right?
Say yes. Go ahead.
I can't really say for sure.
(Music).
Well, this is a really great lesson.
I think it's really great to learn about a person who has done so many things.
Yes. Mei-Lian is an amazing artist.
We can all learn a lot from her.
Do you like painting, friends?
Or would you want to be an artist?
I think it would be an interesting career.
So maybe you can learn how to paint.
Even if you don't want to be an artist, you should still work hard and practice
at whatever you want to do.
That's right.
And if you practice hard, you will succeed.
And that would be a great thing.
We hope that you liked our lesson for today.
And that you learned a lot of great English.
Join us again tomorrow for part two of our lesson here on...
Let's Talk in English.
Bye-bye.
