It's great to see you today, everyone.
Thanks for joining us for some English fun here on the show.
My name is Nathan.
I am one of your teachers here.
Today we want to continue our HEALTH topic.
And our lesson is still called Rob's Checkup.
Rob's Checkup.
Katie, why are checkups important?
Well, we learned yesterday that checkups can keep you healthy.
A doctor will check your heart and your blood pressure, and your eyes and ears
to make sure that everything is OK.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie, and I'm your other teacher here on the show.
Thanks for joining us today.
It's time to look at today's Read It.
Find it in your magazine and read it with Katie now.
Rob is in good shape.
He exercises several times a week.
He doesn't get sick too often, and he got a flu shot last fall.
The doctor didn't discover any health problems.
Susie needs a checkup, too.
Some people in her family had cancer.
She doesn't want to get that or any other disease.
Rob is in great health.
That's good to know.
The rest of his doctor's appointment went very well.
Yes, it did.
The doctor didn't find any health problems.
That's great.
See, friends?
That's why getting a checkup is so important.
Yeah.
Wouldn't you want to know if you had a health problem?
That's why Susie should get a checkup, too.
That's right.
You need to know early if you do have a health problem.
Well, right now we need to go learn our key words for today from Christina.
Hello.
(Chinese).
Well, Rob, you look pretty healthy.
Thanks, Doctor.
I feel pretty good.
I didn't get sick much this year.
Did you get a flu shot last fall?
Yes, I did.
Good.
And do you get enough exercise?
Yes.
I exercise several times a week.
Good!
Keep doing that.
And don't eat too many snacks.
You'll gain weight.
I know.
Dr. Adams is still talking to Rob.
And he says something very nice to Rob.
He says, "You look pretty healthy.".
Well, we often do this in English.
Many times we say that someone looks some way, like:
John looks happy.
Or:
Amy looks sad.
And:
Andrew looks tired.
Or you can say someone looks pretty or great.
But Dr. Adams says Rob looks healthy.
That means he looks good.
And Rob says that he feels pretty good.
He didn't get sick much this year.
That's really great for Rob.
Yeah. How often do you get sick, friends?
Do you get sick when it's cold outside?
Oh. I think that I get sick often.
I get sick when the weather goes from hot to cold really fast.
Hmm. And sometimes when it's cold outside, we get something called a flu shot.
That can keep you from getting the flu.
And what's the flu?
The flu is a really bad sickness.
It's like a cold, only much, much worse.
Right.
So a flu shot can help you keep from getting the flu.
Do you get flu shots, Katie?
Uh... Well, I should, but I usually do not get a flu shot.
I know many people back home in America who get flu shots there, though.
Well, then, Dr. Adams asks Rob if he gets enough exercise.
That's a great question.
Rob says he exercises several times a week.
Do you get enough exercise you think, Katie?
Well, I think so.
I try to exercise several times a week, too.
Just like Rob.
What about you, Nathan?
Yes. I try to go maybe three or four times a week exercising.
And Dr. Adams is happy with Rob's answer.
Then he tells him not to eat too many snacks.
And that is our Calendar Phrase.
Don't eat too many snacks.
Don't eat too many snacks.
(Chinese).
Look at all my snacks.
Don't eat too many snacks.
I bought potato chips and soda.
Don't eat too many snacks.
I bought cookies and candy.
Don't eat too many snacks.
OK.
But what will I do with my snacks?
Give them to me!
Hey!
Don't eat too many snacks.
Don't eat too many snacks.
(Chinese).
Well, that's our Calendar Phrase today.
And now it's time to see what else there is to learn in Conversation B right
now.
How was your checkup, Rob?
It was fine.
I'm in good health.
I'm glad.
So the doctor didn't discover any health problems?
No.
My blood pressure is good.
But I should lose a little weight.
You're not the only one!
But everything else is fine.
I'm in good shape.
I try to take care of my body.
So, friends, Rob is in good health.
And you can say you are in good health if you don't have any health problems.
Hopefully none of you are in bad health.
Oh, yes.
We really want you to be in good health.
And we're glad that Rob is healthy, just like Susie says.
The doctor didn't discover any health problems.
If you discover something, that means that you find it.
Maybe you discover something cool when you are hiking.
You might discover somewhere new to walk that you didn't see before.
Or maybe you discover a new movie you want to watch.
Discovering things is all about finding something new to enjoy.
But a doctor may discover health problems when you have a checkup.
If you discover a health problem, then you can take care of the problem and get
rid of it.
That's right.
But Rob says he should lose a little weight.
That's not a big problem, but maybe it's something he should think about if he
wants.
And you can lose weight in a healthy way.
You can exercise some more and eat better food for you.
That's right.
Snacks and junk food won't help you lose weight.
But Rob doesn't need to lose much weight.
He's in good shape.
Oh! "In shape." That's a great phrase to know.
What does it mean to be in shape, Nathan?
Can you tell us?
Hmm. Sure!
To be in shape means to be very fit and healthy.
If you're in shape, you probably run a lot or get a lot of exercise.
And you probably think a lot about the foods that you eat.
But, can people be out of shape, Nathan?
Yes, they can.
If you're out of shape, you are not very fit.
You can also say that you're in bad shape.
But that means you're not in good health.
That's right.
And now we need to go to Christina.
She wants to tell you all about the sentence:
I try to take care of my body.
(Chinese).
OK, everyone.
Well, make sure that you take care of yourself by being healthy and exercising a
lot.
And sometimes you need to take a break.
Let's do that now.
Don't goaway.
