You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we're very glad that you joined us for our show today.
Our new topic is HEALTH.
And the title of our lesson is Rob's Checkup.
Rob's Checkup.
Nathan, when was your last checkup?
Oh, that's a really good question.
Maybe it's time for my next checkup very soon.
I'm Nathan, everyone.
I'm the other teacher here on Let's Talk in English.
OK, everyone, let's get ready for our lesson.
Find your magazine and turn to today's Read It.
You can read with Nathan right now.
Rob has a doctor's appointment today.
He needs a checkup.
The doctor can check Rob's heart and blood pressure.
He can check his eyes and ears, too.
He can also check Rob's height and weight.
Rob has a checkup every year.
He wants to stay healthy.
Well, staying healthy is so important, and that's why you should get a checkup
every year.
Just like Rob.
He wants to stay healthy, so he's taking good care of himself.
And checkups keep you healthy.
When you get a checkup, you check on lots of things.
You check your eyes and your ears to make sure that you are seeing and hearing
everything OK.
And you check how much you weigh to see if you have gained weight in the last
year.
Well, we'll see how Rob's checkup goes today.
But first we need to learn our key words with our word lady.
Hello.
(Chinese).
Good job on your report, Susie.
Thanks, Rob!
Let's go get some coffee.
I can't.
I have a doctor's appointment at 3:00.
Are you sick?
No. I just need a checkup.
Do you have one every year?
Yes, I do.
Good for you.
Checkups keep you healthy.
Well, to start out today, Susie wants to go get coffee with Rob.
If you are with a friend, you can use this sentence.
You can say, "Let's do something together." Do you want to try, Nathan?
Oh. Try to use this sentence?
Sure.
Let's go to the supermarket together.
Or let's go study together.
Or let's go get some ice cream together.
I like that one.
Well, those are all great sentences.
But Rob can't get coffee with Susie today.
Why not?
Because he has a doctor's appointment at 3:00.
Oh, a doctor's appointment.
Well, I think Katie just said our Use It sentence for today.
So let's take a look at it with Elizabeth.
(Music).
Today we are going to learn how to use the pattern:
I have a(n) something at some time.
For example:
I have a class at 9 o'clock.
Or, I have a meeting at noon.
Don't forget to Use It.
(Music).
Well, this sentence is really important.
You need to know when you have to be at appointments.
So that's why you need to make sure that you can use this sentence.
So, what other kinds of appointments can you have?
You can have an appointment with other doctors.
Oh, that's right.
Sometimes you might have a dentist appointment.
That's a doctor who takes care of your teeth.
Or you might have an eye doctor appointment.
He makes sure that your eyes are OK.
Or you might have an appointment at work.
If you have an appointment at work, you have to meet with someone that you work
with.
Oh, that's right, Nathan.
So Rob has a doctor's appointment.
Usually you go to the doctor when you are sick.
But Rob isn't sick.
He's just getting a checkup.
Now like we said earlier, you should get a checkup every year.
Yes, that's important.
When you get a checkup, the doctor does different things.
He looks at your eyes and your ears.
He needs to make sure that you can see well and that you can hear things.
The doctor will also check your height and weight.
He wants to know how tall you are and how much you weigh.
That's right, and that's important, also.
A checkup can tell you if you have some health problems.
And then you can fix those problems.
Right.
And that's why Susie says checkups keep you healthy.
But I think other things can keep you healthy, right, Katie?
Well, that's right.
Exercise will keep you healthy.
And eating good food will keep you healthy, also.
Good job.
So what do you do that helps keep you healthy?
Now Christina also wants to talk to you about the sentence:
Checkups keep you healthy.
Let's see what she has to say right now.
(Chinese).
Hi, Carol. I'm leaving now.
Where are you going?
I have a doctor's appointment at 3:00.
That's right!
You're going for a checkup.
Yes.
The doctor will check my heart and my blood pressure.
Good!
You don't want any heart problems!
I know.
Last year my blood pressure was a little high.
Rob is leaving for the doctor now.
And before we can learn more.
Let's talk about today's Calendar Phrase!
I'm leaving now.
I'm leaving now.
(Chinese).
Excuse me, John.
I'm checking my phone.
Well, I have to go.
I'm leaving now.
I'm checking my calls.
Goodbye. I'm leaving now.
Now I'm checking my email.
Goodbye. I'm leaving now.
And now I'm checking my Facebook.
Goodbye!
What!? You have to go?
Why didn't you say so?
I'm leaving now.
I'm leaving now.
(Chinese).
So, that is our Calendar Phrase for today.
And if someone says that phrase to you, maybe you can ask them, "Where are you
going?" just like Carol asks Rob.
And after Rob tells her he has a doctor's appointment at 3:00, Carol says,
"That's right!" Well, that seems kind of weird to say "right" here.
Well, you're right about that, Nathan.
But when Carol said, "That's right," she just means, "Oh, I remember." Maybe Rob
told her about this a long time ago, so now Carol is remembering.
Hmm.
And that's why she said, "That's right!" I get it now.
Then she says, "You're going for a checkup.".
So now let's talk about what else a doctor will check when you go for a checkup.
Nathan, do you remember?
Oh, I do.
Now, a doctor looks at some different things when you go to a checkup.
He looks at your heart.
He wants to make sure that everything is OK with your heart.
That's right.
He wants to see how strong your heart is.
He wants to see if it is working the right way.
Because sometimes your heart can get sick, and you might not always know when
that happens.
Sometimes your heart is sick and you don't even know it.
That's true.
And heart problems can be really bad.
You can't always take medicine and just make your heart better.
So that's another reason that you should get checkups often.
You want to make sure your heart is OK.
But another thing the doctor will check is your blood pressure.
Now this is also very important.
Your heart also affects your blood pressure.
So you have to make sure it's all right.
Right.
So if something is wrong with your heart, you might have low or high blood
pressure.
And those things are things that are not good for your health.
If your blood pressure is high, that probably means you have a lot of stress in
your life or at work.
And if you're stressed, sometimes that makes your blood pressure high.
And that's what a doctor will look for when you have a checkup.
And he will tell you things you can do to make your blood pressure go down.
Last year Rob's blood pressure was a little high.
Oh.
So I wonder if it is still high this year.
Hopefully Rob did some things to make his blood pressure go down.
Well, I think that we will find out in Conversation C.
But before we go there, let's take a short break.
We'll be rightback.
