This is Let's Talk in English.
It's time to have some fun and learn a lot of great English together.
My name is Katie.
And we are very glad that you joined us today.
Our topic is still FOOD.
And we have part two of our lesson - A Fast Food Order.
A Fast Food Order.
Nathan, what's your favorite fast food?
Well, a lot of fast food tastes good.
But one of my favorites is pizza.
That's great.
My name is Nathan, everyone.
Thank you for joining us to learn some English today.
So let's get started.
Find your magazine and turn to today's Read It.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Susie can't order lunch.
She forgot what everyone wanted!
She asks Mark to tell her his order again.
But he has changed his mind.
Now he wants extra ketchup on his hamburgers and two apple pies.
This lunch order is getting too confusing - there are too many details.
Susie has an idea, though.
She'll just get some pizzas!
Well, Susie is smart.
Instead of trying to remember everyone's order, she's going to get pizza for
everyone.
Now I think everyone will be happy with that.
I hope so.
And I guess there were too many things to remember.
This will be easier for Susie.
Well, you're right.
If you're getting lunch for everyone, it's hard to remember what people want
since they all want to eat something different.
And like our Read It says, that gets too confusing.
Now let's learn our key words together with our word lady.
Hello.
(Chinese).
Hi, Susie.
What are you working on?
I want to go and order lunch from Pete's Hamburgers.
But I can't remember everyone's orders!
You didn't write them down?
No.
I thought I could remember.
But everybody had a special order.
I see.
What can you remember?
Rob wants a chicken sandwich with extra lettuce and tomatoes.
And Mark wants two cheeseburgers.
Or were they hamburgers?
Oh, I'm so confused!
Well, Megan finds Susie and she asks her, "What are you working on?" She wants
to know what Susie is doing right now.
And that's a good question to ask someone when you are at work or even at
school.
At your job, you might have to work on a project.
And you might work on your homework when you are at home.
So try to ask someone that question today.
But right now Susie is trying to remember everyone's order.
Everyone ordered something different.
Hey, we should look at the word "order." Did you hear what Nathan just said?
He used the word "order" as a noun and as a verb.
Hmm. Now, this is another one of those strange English words, friends.
You can order things and you can make an order.
That's right.
At a restaurant, you order food.
And the food that you ask for is your order.
But is there anything else we order, Nathan?
Well, a lot of people order things like clothes or books from the Internet.
It takes some time for that... those things to get to your house, though.
They send them in the mail.
Well, that's true.
But Megan had another great question for Susie.
She said, "You didn't write them down?".
Uh, wait, Katie.
Now that wasn't a question, was it?
Well, yes, it was.
Sometimes in English we do this.
So Megan could say:
You didn't write them down.
Or she can ask:
You didn't write them down?
Hmm. Right.
Now that's why it's really important to listen hard when people speak.
You need to know if they're asking a question or not.
But Susie didn't write down everyone's orders.
So that's why it's a good idea to write things down.
Sometimes you can remember things easily if you write them down.
And that's what Christina wants to talk to you all about right now.
Let's look at the phrase "write something down" with her.
(Chinese).
Mark! I'm glad you're here.
Can you tell me your lunch order again?
Two hamburgers, fries, a large Coke and apple pie!
Great.
I'm going to Pete's to order lunch in just a minute!
Wait!
I changed my mind.
Oh, no!
I want two hamburgers with extra ketchup, and two pieces of apple pie.
I'll try to remember that.
Well, at the end of Conversation A, Susie was confused.
She couldn't remember everyone's order.
That's why she needs to write it down.
So she's asking everyone what they want to order again!
But...
Oh, no!
Mark changed his mind.
Changed his mind?
That's today's Calendar Phrase.
I changed my mind.
I changed my mind.
(Chinese).
Are you ready to order?
Yes. I want a hamburger.
OK. One hamburger.
Wait. I changed my mind.
Oh?
I want a pizza.
OK. One pizza.
Wait. I changed my mind.
Oh?
I want a salad.
OK. One salad.
Wait. I changed my mind.
Oh?
I'm not hungry.
Oh!
I changed my mind.
I changed my mind.
(Chinese).
Well, do you ever do that, friends?
Do you ever change your mind?
I know that I do.
Yeah.
Sometimes I'm not sure what I want, and that's when I might change my mind.
I think I change my mind when I have too many things to choose from.
Sometimes it's hard to decide, so I change my mind a lot.
So how did Mark change his mind?
Well, at first, he said he wanted two hamburgers, fries and a large Coke and
apple pie.
But now he wants two hamburgers with extra ketchup and two pieces of apple pie.
Hmm, so what's different?
Well, now he wants extra ketchup on his hamburgers.
And he doesn't want the Coke or the French fries anymore.
And now he wants two pieces of apple pie.
Remember, he's really hungry.
I know when I'm hungry, it's hard to decide what to eat.
So that's probably why Mark keeps changing his mind.
But it must be really hard for Susie to remember all of this.
I think I would have trouble remembering what Mark wants.
Huh!
That's true.
That's why Susie says, "I'll try to remember that." If you try to do something,
you want to do it, but you're not sure if you really can.
Yeah.
Sometimes I'll tell my friends I'll try to go to their house on the weekend.
I want to go, but I'm not sure if I can.
Or you can say you'll try to do better in school.
You want to do better, but you don't know if you can.
But we think that you can.
So right now let's take a short break.
Christina has a phrase that she wants to talk to us about right now.
(Chinese).
OK.
So now it's time for us to say...
We'll be right back in just a minute. It's time for a little break.
