Hello, everyone, and welcome to today's English lesson here on Let's Talk in
English.
It's going to be great.
My name is Nathan.
I'm one of your teachers here.
Today we have a SMALL TALK lesson for you.
It's called, Is This My Schedule?
Is This My Schedule?
Katie, are you busy this week?
Oh, well, Nathan, I don't know.
I need to look at my schedule before I answer that question.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie, and I'm your other teacher here on the show.
We've got a lot of great things to learn together today.
Now let's practice our reading by reading our Read It.
You can find it in your magazine and read it with Katie now.
Carol gives Mark his schedule for the week.
He has some interviews.
Each one is 40 minutes long.
He also has some meetings.
They are half an hour long.
Mark doesn't like meetings.
Carol understands that.
But meetings are important.
Mark will also take people to lunch the day after tomorrow.
But he can be back in time for his program.
Mark has a few different things on his schedule this week.
I think he might be busy.
Yes, he has some interviews, some meetings and a lunch.
He might need to use a lot of his time to do all those things.
That's true.
When you have many things on your schedule, you need to think more about all the
work you have to do by yourself.
That's right.
Make sure you have time to finish all your work, everyone.
Oh, and right now it's time for us to get started with our key words.
Let's see our word lady.
Hello.
(Chinese).
Hi, Carol.
Hi, Mark.
Are you ready for a new week?
Sure! What's on my schedule?
You have a lot of interviews.
That's good.
Do I have one every day?
Yes. And you have two on Thursday.
Are they long interviews?
No. Each one is about 40 minutes.
Good. That's not too long.
(Music).
I agree.
I don't think a meeting that is 40 minutes is very long.
I have been in some meetings that were much longer.
Oh, I know.
Some meetings keep going for hours.
Those meetings are long, but they are usually long because they are important.
Yes. People need to talk about things together at work.
That's what meetings are good for.
They let everyone know how to help each other.
But let's talk a little about how we can say how long something, like a meeting,
is.
You can say: The meeting was 40 minutes.
Is there another way to say this, Nathan?
Hmm. I think so.
Oh. You can also say: The meeting was 40 minutes long.
We heard that kind of sentence in today's Read It.
But Nathan, does that mean something different?
It sounds like you were saying that the meeting will be long.
No, no. If something like a meeting is long, it takes a lot of time.
But if you say that it's 40 minutes long or an hour long, you are just saying
how much time it will take.
Oh, OK.
So we can say a meeting is (blank) long.
We can use this sentence for other things, too.
Can you think of one, Nathan?
Um, hmm... sure.
That movie is two hours long.
That flight is 20 minutes long.
You can use that sentence to talk about how much time many things might take.
I really like to know how long something will take.
I can plan things better that way.
Well, then you probably like to see how long something will be on your schedule.
I do, too.
Now what else do you like to see on your schedule?
Is there anything that you like to see on your schedule, Katie?
Well, a lot of times I like to see if someone is leaving town.
When you work in an office, you have to work with other people.
So if someone is going out of town, you need to know.
What about you, Nathan?
Well, I like to see who I'm working with.
And sometimes that can be written on the schedule, too.
But you know, I also like getting some help from Christina.
Well, then let's hear about using the word "on" when we are talking about our
schedules.
(Chinese).
Here is your schedule. Take a look.
Thanks.
There are some meetings on my schedule.
Yes. But they are not long.
They will only be half an hour.
That's good.
You don't like my meetings?
Well, I, er...
Don't worry.
I understand.
All of us are busy people.
Yes, we are!
Let's get back to work!
(Music).
Well, I can tell that Carol is the boss.
She says, "Back to work!" I think that is something that a boss would say.
You're right.
A boss wants everyone to work well and get many things done.
But what does it mean if your boss tells you to get back to work?
Well, it means that it's time for you to start working again.
If you're talking to other people and not working, your boss might say: Hey,
you, get back to work!
Oh. Well, that sounds like an angry boss.
I hope most bosses aren't like that.
Carol isn't.
She just knows that they are both very busy.
"All of us are busy people," she says.
She could also say, "We are all busy people." They both mean the same thing.
And we are all busy people because we have a lot more to learn today.
Let's take a look at the next thing.
Take a look at our next thing?
"Take a look" is our next thing.
It's today's... Calendar Phrase.
Take a look.
Take a look.
(Chinese).
Is this camera on sale?
Yes. Take a look.
Is this book on sale?
Yes. Take a look.
Is this watch on sale?
Yes. Take a look.
Do you want to buy something?
Oh, no.
My wallet is empty.
Take a look.
Take a look.
(Chinese).
Thanks for taking a look at today's Calendar Phrase, everyone.
If you take a look at something, you look at it quickly.
So what can you take a look at?
Well, we can take a look at a phrase about time.
You already know what it means if something is 40 minutes long.
But what if it is half an hour long?
Hmm, half an hour?
Good question.
How many minutes is half an hour?
30 minutes, of course.
One hour is 60 minutes.
So half is 30 minutes.
So you can say 30 minutes, half an hour or a half hour.
They all mean the same thing and they are all common.
Hey, Katie, the show is about half an hour long.
And we don't want to make our show too much longer today, so I think it's about
time for us to take a break.
We'll be back in a few key words.
But, uh... I think... I mean we'll be back in a fewminutes. Don't go away.
