Hey. Welcome to the show, everyone.
We have a lot to learn here today on Let's Talk in English.
My name is Nathan, and I am one of your teachers here on the show.
Today our topic is TRAVEL.
And our lesson is called Hotel or Motel?
Hotel or Motel?
Katie, do you like hotels or motels more?
Well, Nathan, I think I like hotels more.
They're usually bigger and nicer and more comfortable.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie, and I'm your other teacher here on Let's Talk in English.
We've got a lot to learn today.
Now let's practice our reading together with today's Read It.
Find it in your LTE magazine and read it with Katie now.
Mark is going to Chicago in a few weeks to see the sights.
Should he stay in a hotel or a motel?
Hotels downtown are nice if he can afford them.
Maybe Mark can find a good deal online.
Motels are cheaper.
He could stay in a motel in the suburbs and take a bus or train into the city.
So Mark wants to see the sights in Chicago.
He wants to see all the things there are to see in Chicago.
So what are some sights in that city, Katie?
Well, there's Millennium Park.
That's a really big park that people like to visit in Chicago.
Do you know any other Chicago sights, Nathan?
Hmm, I do.
People can also go to the Sears Tower.
That's a really tall building in the city.
That's right.
And Chicago has a lot of sights to see.
I bet that Mark has a lot of fun on his trip to the city.
But he needs to figure out a place to stay before he gets there.
So let's go learn our key words and then we can find out what he decides to do.
(Chinese).
(Music).
You travel a lot, don't you, Megan?
Not as much as I'd like to!
But yes, I travel some.
Do you like hotels or motels better?
I like hotels better, if I can afford them.
But why do you ask?
I'm going to Chicago with some friends in a few weeks.
That sounds like fun.
I think so.
So should we stay in a hotel or a motel?
As we all know, Megan likes to travel.
And that's why Mark asks if she travels a lot at the beginning of Conversation
A.
Well, wait, Nathan, I'm confused.
Megan doesn't say yes or no.
She says, "Not as much as I'd like to." What does that mean?
Well, that means that she travels, but she wants to travel more.
You could answer questions that way, too, Katie.
Uh, like... uh, like this:
You read a lot, right, Katie?
Well, I do.
But I don't read as much as I'd like to.
Oh, hey, you're right, Nathan.
Well, now Mark wants to know if Megan likes hotels or motels better.
Hmm. That's a great question.
That's right.
When you go visit a place, you have to sleep somewhere.
Most people stay in a hotel or a motel.
Ah. Now those words sound almost the same, but they are different kinds of
places.
A hotel is a... usually a very big place.
And motels are smaller than hotels.
And at a motel, your door to your room opens right to the outside.
And sometimes they cost less money.
But Megan likes hotels better.
Oh, wait.
She likes hotels better if she can afford them.
Hmm, afford?
That's a good word.
If you can afford something, you have the money to buy it.
Sometimes I say that I can't afford something.
When I say that, that means I should not buy it.
I don't have the money.
That's right.
So it's important to know if you can afford things or not.
That's right.
Sometimes I don't travel because I can't afford it.
But if I can afford it, I try to travel a lot.
Now Mark needs to go to a hotel or a motel because he's going to Chicago.
OK. Next, I think we have a Chinese point to talk about with Christina.
(Chinese).
(Music).
What are you going to do there?
I'm going to have fun and see the sights.
Well, Chicago is an easy place to get around.
The buses and trains are excellent.
So we could stay at a motel in the suburbs.
Then we could take the bus or train into the city.
Yes, that would be cheaper.
But staying downtown in a hotel would be more convenient.
And a lot more expensive!
So what is Mark going to do in Chicago?
That is a great question.
And it's a great question because today it's our Calendar Phrase.
What are you going to do there?
What are you going to do there?
(Chinese).
I'm going to the big city.
What are you going to do there?
I'm going to go downtown.
What are you going to do there?
I'm going to stay at a big hotel.
What are you going to do there?
I'm going to sleep!
But you can do that here!
What are you going to do there?
What are you going to do there?
(Chinese).
So what do you do when you visit a new city?
You go see the sights.
And there are a lot of sights to see in Chicago.
Mmhm. That's right.
Like we said earlier, you can visit the Sears Tower or you can go to Millennium
Park.
But there are many other things to do, too.
There are.
But when you go see a new city, you have to be able to get around that city.
You have to go from place to place.
Some places are hard to get around.
There might be a lot of people or a lot of cars on the road.
But there are some places that are easy to get around.
And how do you get around a place?
There are a lot of different ways.
Yes. You can get around a city by driving a car or a scooter.
Or you can take a bus or the subway.
Or you can walk.
And Chicago is easy to get around because it has good buses and trains that go
everywhere.
Mmhm. And that means Mark can stay outside of the city and take a train or a bus
into the city every day.
And if he does that, then Mark can stay in a motel.
Most hotels are downtown and they're expensive there.
That is true.
But like Mark says, a hotel downtown would be more convenient.
He would be closer to the sights if he stayed downtown.
But if he stayed in the suburbs, he could save some money.
And then he could do more fun things in Chicago.
Hmm. So what would you do, friends?
Katie, what about you?
Well, I think that I would probably stay in the suburbs and try to save some
money.
That would be a good idea.
Now it's time for us to take a break.
Don't go away.
We'll be rightback.
