Welcome back to today's TRAVEL lesson.
When you go visit a place, you might have to stay in a hotel or a motel.
Which would you rather visit?
That's right.
And when you go to a new city, you also have to find a way to get around that
city.
And there are many different ways to go from place to place.
You can take a train or a bus or you can even walk.
But let's learn some more in Conversation C right now.
Hotels aren't always expensive, are they?
The really nice hotels are.
But sometimes you can find good deals online.
I'd like to stay downtown.
Then we can walk everywhere.
But staying in a motel or small hotel in the suburbs will save you money.
Some of them give you free breakfast, too.
Downtown hotels might not.
That's true.
I'll talk to my friends about it.
Good idea.
You should all agree!
So do any of you stay in hotels?
Katie, do you stay in hotels often?
No. I really don't.
Like we learned, hotels can be expensive.
So I like to look for deals online.
That's what Megan says you can do.
Sometimes you can find a good deal for something online.
And a good deal means that you might be able to save some money or some time.
I like to look for good deals on clothes or airplane tickets.
And I like to get good deals for traveling, too.
And it's good to look for good deals when you go to the supermarket to buy food.
Yeah, that's right.
Finding good deals will help you afford more things.
Finding good deals can save you some money.
Hey, Katie, "save you money" is the phrase that Christina wants to talk to our
friends about right now.
(Chinese).
If you get a good deal on a hotel, you might be able to stay in a nice hotel for
less money.
Yeah. If I find a good deal on a hotel, I like to stay in the hotels downtown.
Like Mark says, I want to walk everywhere.
That's my favorite way to get around the city.
And that's a great way to get around the city.
Then you can see places you might not be able to see from a train that goes
under the street.
Exactly.
Now one good thing about motels is that they often give you free breakfast.
Some hotels do that, but not all of them do.
Oh, it's great when you get free breakfast.
Then you can save some money on food, too.
That's right.
But Megan doesn't know if the hotels downtown give free breakfast.
That's why she says, "Downtown hotels might not.".
Wait, downtown hotels might not what, Katie?
Oh. Well, that sentence is a little weird.
The sentence before that one says, "Some of them give you free breakfast." So
the sentence after means downtown hotels might not give you free breakfast.
Oh, OK.
Well, right now I think we need to move on and review our key words together.
Here's the first key word.
sight.
sight.
John wants to see the sights in Beijing.
stay.
stay.
Al will stay in the city for three days.
hotel.
hotel.
Jon stayed in a nice hotel for a week.
motel.
motel.
You can park your car near the motel.
downtown.
downtown.
You can walk downtown in 20 minutes.
deal.
deal.
This coat is $50.
That's a great deal!
And those are all of our key words.
Now it's time to review today's conversations.
You travel a lot, don't you, Megan?
Not as much as I'd like to!
But yes, I travel some.
Do you like hotels or motels better?
I like hotels better, if I can afford them.
But why do you ask?
I'm going to Chicago with some friends in a few weeks.
That sounds like fun.
I think so.
So should we stay in a hotel or a motel?
What are you going to do there?
I'm going to have fun and see the sights.
Well, Chicago is an easy place to get around.
The buses and trains are excellent.
So we could stay at a motel in the suburbs.
Then we could take the bus or train into the city.
Yes, that would be cheaper.
But staying downtown in a hotel would be more convenient.
And a lot more expensive!
Hello, Ginger.
And goodbye, Monkey Man.
Goodbye?
Yeah. I'm traveling to Chicago to see the sights.
Hmm, Chicago.
That's a great idea.
It is?
Yeah. Let's both go!
OK. Let's stay in a hotel downtown.
No, no. Let's stay in the suburbs in a motel.
A hotel is more convenient.
But a motel is cheaper.
A hotel is better.
A motel is better.
Hotel.
Motel.
Well, Monkey Man, I'm staying in a motel.
Good. But I'm staying in a hotel.
Fine!
At least we both agree.
Hey, Bartholomew.
Hi, Max.
Can I help you?
You have a stupid name.
Now give me your chips!
Oh, man! Max took my chips again.
He's such a mean guy.
How can he always be that mean?
Is that fun for him?
Bullies aren't always mean, are they?
That was a super sentence.
Huh?
I am Super Sentence Man, and you just used today's super sentence.
I did?
Yes! The super sentence is:
Something aren't always something, are they?
You said, "Bullies aren't always mean, are they?".
I guess I did.
Well, before I can answer that question, maybe you can give me a few of your own
super sentences.
Maybe I can.
Hmm. Rabbits aren't always fast, are they?
Rabbits aren't always fast, are they?
Good question.
Do you have another super sentence?
Plane tickets aren't always expensive, are they?
Plane tickets aren't always expensive, are they?
Great sentences.
Always remember, a super sentence every day will make your English great.
Uh, now, what was your question?
Oh. Bullies aren't always mean, are they?
Ah, right.
Bullies, they can be mean many times, but... but even bullies have bad days.
Even bullies need good friends.
Even bullies...
Uh, what's wrong, Max?
Oh, Sally's mean.
She said I was a stupid bully.
Oh. Well, you are a bully.
I know.
But am I stupid?
If you give me back my chips, I'll tell you.
Oh, here you go.
I'm sorry I stole your chips.
I'm sorry I interrupted you, Super Sentence Man.
I guess bullies aren't always mean.
Well, everyone, that's the end of our lesson on TRAVEL.
And that's also the end of our week of learning English together.
But it's been a great week.
We've learned a lot.
So what do you think, Nathan?
Would you stay at a hotel or a motel?
I think I would save money and try to stay at a motel.
It's important to think about that when you travel.
Yes. You should think about the city you're going to visit, also.
If it's easy to get around, it might be OK to stay outside the city in the
suburbs.
That's true.
Well, it's time to say goodbye.
See you next time here on... Let's Talk in English. Bye-bye.
