You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we are excited to learn a lot of great English with you
today.
Our topic is still TECHNOLOGY.
And we have part two of our lesson - Hello? Can You Hear Me?
Hello? Can You Hear Me?
So, Nathan, do you often call people online?
Oh, yes. I probably call someone online at least every week, sometimes even
more.
Hello, everyone, my name is Nathan.
I am your other teacher here on Let's Talk in English.
Well, now it's time to start our lesson.
So find your magazine and turn to today's Read It.
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Mark is happy.
He is chatting online with his mom.
She is using a microphone.
There's no fee to use the service.
It's free!
Mark's mom watched the news.
She's worried about Mark's brother.
Mark called his brother long-distance.
He is OK!
Mark's grandma's birthday is tomorrow.
He will call her next!
Well, Mark is making another call today.
Do you remember who he called yesterday, Nathan?
Well, sure I do.
He called his brother in England after the big storm there.
That's right.
He wanted to make sure that his brother was OK.
And today he called his mom.
But he used the phone to call his brother.
Today he is using the Internet.
I wonder why he needed to call his mom.
Well, you should call your parents to show that you care.
You don't need another reason.
Well, I guess that's right.
And we need to look at our key words with Christina, our word lady.
Hello.
(Chinese).
Hi, Mom.
Mark. Mark. Can you hear me?
Does this microphone work?
Yes, Mom.
I can hear you.
Can you see me on the screen?
Yes, Mom.
I can see you.
Good. I can see you, too.
Great.
Is there a fee for using this video?
It looks expensive.
No, Mom.
It's free.
It looks like Mark's mom is not really used to talking online.
It's very different from talking on the phone, right, Nathan?
It can be different.
When you call someone online, you can hear them like you do on the phone.
But you can usually see them, too.
And that's what makes it very different.
Many computers today have a video camera in them.
That lets you see the other person when you call them.
But your computer needs something else for calling people, too.
A microphone.
Some people buy a microphone to use with their computer.
But many computers have microphones in them.
Mark's mom isn't used to microphones.
She's not sure if hers works.
And now is a good time to learn today's Calendar Phrase.
Does this microphone work?
Does this microphone work?
(Chinese).
Hello. Hello.
Does this microphone work?
What did you say?
Does this microphone work?
Sorry. I can't hear you.
Does this microphone work?
Please speak louder.
That microphone doesn't work.
Does this microphone work?
Does this microphone work?
(Chinese).
Hmm. Does this microphone work?
Can you hear me, everyone?
Oh, good.
Just checking.
Well, you may not use a microphone very often, friends, but it's good to check
your microphone when you do.
Yeah. We check our microphones every day that we teach here in the studio.
But Mark's mom checks some other things, too.
She makes sure that Mark can see her.
Yes. She wants to know if she is on his screen, then he can see her.
But you don't have to use the camera when you call people, do you, Nathan?
Well, I always use the camera when I call people on my computer.
I like to see people when I talk to them.
And it's so cool that you can see people so far away.
It seems like that would be expensive, but it's free.
I know.
It's so nice.
And that's probably why Mark's mom check to see if it was expensive, too.
But the call is free.
And before we see what else Mark's mom has to say, let's learn about our word...
the word "work" with Christina.
(Music).
Did you hear the news?
There was a big storm in England!
I know, Mom.
Did you call your brother?
Yes, Mom.
I called him long-distance.
The storm was really bad.
It was on the news!
I'm worried!
What if he is hurt?
Nate is fine.
He's at home.
Are you sure?
Yes, Mom.
I'm sure.
(Music).
Now Mark and his mom are talking about his brother in England.
Mark called him yesterday.
But it sounds like his mom just heard the news.
Well, I'm not so sure about that, Nathan.
Maybe she's just making sure that he knows about it.
Moms do that a lot.
I guess that's right.
Moms like to check on their kids.
They like to see how they're doing.
Does your mom check on you a lot, Katie?
Oh, yes, my mom does check on me a lot.
She wants to know if I'm doing OK because I live far away.
And she also often tells me the news about the family.
I'm glad she tells me those things.
Well, me, too.
My parents often know about family news before I do.
But let's talk about that word news.
Mark's mom used it in two different ways.
First, she asked Mark if he had heard the news about the storm.
The news about something just means information about things that just happened.
Right.
The storm just happened.
So there is new information or news about it.
So that's one way to use the news.
How else did Mark's mom use it, Nathan?
Well, she said that the storm was on the news.
When she said that, I don't think she was just talking about new information.
No. Here she used "the news" in a different way.
If something is on the news, it means that you see it on a news show on TV or
maybe you hear it on the radio.
So remember the difference, everyone.
You can say: Did you hear the news about the storm?
Or you can say: The storm was on the news.
They are different.
But what if you forget the difference?
Don't worry.
You can always improve with review and practice.
So now let's learn about that "What if... " sentence right now.
(Chinese).
Thank you, Christina.
So, what if we take a break right now?
Would that be OK?
I hope so.
We'll be back in just a few minutes.
(Music).
