Well, thank you for joining us again, friends.
Today we're talking about making calls.
Mark calls his mom online so that he can talk to her about all the news they've
heard today.
And when you call someone online, there are some things you might need to check.
First you can check the microphone.
Make sure that the person you are calling can hear you.
And then check your camera.
Make sure they can see you, too.
All right.
Let's see the rest of this call in Conversation C.
How is work?
Work is great.
I'm interviewing Cam Chang tomorrow!
Cam Chang!
Is he in Friday Night Live?
Yes. He's in My Favorite Flower Shirt, too.
I love that movie.
He is a great actor.
Mom, I need to pick up the phone.
My phone is ringing.
OK. Remember to call and chat with your grandmother.
Her birthday is tomorrow!
I will.
Bye!
Bye!
Well, I really am glad that we can call people like that today.
I remember when we only had phones to use for talking to people far away.
And they weren't smartphones, either.
And before telephones, you could only write to people.
We really should be very thankful for the technology that we have now.
Yes. Technology is making the world feel smaller.
Even if someone is in another country, we can talk to them very easily.
Hey, you know, Katie, we learned a key word today that also means talk.
Do you remember which key word I mean?
A key word that means talk?
Oh. I think Mark's mom just used it in the last conversation.
Do you mean the word chat?
That's the one.
When you chat with someone, you are just having fun talking to them.
Chatting is usually not about important things.
That's right.
You might chat about the weather or about your clothes.
We don't usually say that you chat about serious things like problems at work or
home.
But when you chat online, it makes me think of something else.
When you type short messages to someone back and forth, that is also called
chatting.
Oh, that's true.
Chatting on the computer is like that.
But Mark will be chatting with someone else for an interview.
Yes. He is interviewing Cam Chang tomorrow.
And that sounds like today's Use It sentence.
(Music).
Now we're going to learn the pattern:
I'm doing something tomorrow!
For example: I'm watching a movie tomorrow!
Hmm. Sounds fun.
Or... I'm buying a car tomorrow!
Wow!
So, friends, whatever you do tomorrow, don't forget to use it.
(Music).
Well, thanks for that great sentence, Elizabeth.
So what are you doing tomorrow, everyone?
I think you can answer that question with a Use It sentence.
I think I'm going to watch some of Cam Chang's movies tomorrow!
Or I'm going to practice my English tomorrow!
Tomorrow?
But it's time for us to practice now!
Let's review our key words together.
And the first key word is:
chat.
chat.
I chatted with Grandma on the phone.
microphone.
microphone.
I can't hear you.
Use the microphone.
fee.
fee.
I pay a fee to use the pool.
news.
news.
Joe watches the news every day at six.
long-distance.
long-distance.
How much is the long-distance call?
OK. We hope that you continue to practice those key words.
Find a good way to use them.
But right now, we want to continue today's review by looking back at today's
conversations together.
Hi, Mom.
Mark. Mark. Can you hear me?
Does this microphone work?
Yes, Mom.
I can hear you.
Can you see me on the screen?
Yes, Mom.
I can see you.
Good. I can see you, too.
Great.
Is there a fee for using this video?
It looks expensive.
No, Mom.
It's free.
Did you hear the news?
There was a big storm in England!
I know, Mom.
Did you call your brother?
Yes, Mom.
I called him long-distance.
The storm was really bad.
It was on the news!
I'm worried!
What if he is hurt?
Nate is fine.
He's at home.
Are you sure?
Yes, Mom.
I'm sure.
I will.
Bye!
Bye!
(Music).
Love you, too, Mom.
Oh. Hey, Ginger, did you talk to your mom?
Yeah.
Well, did you call her on the phone?
No.
Well, then how did you talk to her?
I talked to her online.
Oh. Using the computer is a great idea.
Yeah. I saw my mom on the screen.
That's great.
And I heard her talking, too!
Oh, that's wonderful!
Yeah. We can chat for free.
What a great idea.
Look. Mom's online now.
Oh.
Say hi to my mom, Monkey Man.
OK. Um. Hello? I'm the Monkey Man.
It's nice to meet you.
Uh, Monkey Man, my mom doesn't speak English.
Use monkey talk.
Oh, yeah. Uh... OK.
She says nice to meet you, too.
Ah, she understands.
Hello.
Welcome to LTE TV.
May I help you?
You want to talk to me about my job?
Well, sure.
My name is Rebecca, and I am a receptionist.
What does a receptionist do?
That's a good question.
And I'd be happy to answer that.
Actually, that's part of my job.
I answer questions.
People call our offices and want to get information.
I will answer their questions for them.
Sometimes people call and they want to speak to one of our coworkers.
If my coworker is not available, it is my job to take a message.
If my coworker is available, then I will transfer the call.
I also welcome guests who come to our offices.
My desk is at the front of our office.
I am usually the first person people meet when they come to the office.
I greet the guests and then let my boss and other coworkers know when their
guests have arrived.
I also do many other things like receiving and distributing the mail, answering
emails and paying bills.
Being a receptionist is a busy job.
But I love it.
I get to help my coworkers and make their jobs easier.
Oh, excuse me.
I have a phone call.
I am a receptionist.
And I love this job.
Yes. May I help you?
Oh, that's a great profession to learn about today.
Receptionists have to call people and answer the phone a lot.
Yes. Their bosses are very busy and they need someone to let them know about
news from other people.
Or their boss might need them to tell others some news.
Many people make calls for work both with a phone and online.
But today, calling people is very important to all of us.
I think we all make some long-distance calls.
And I'm so glad that we can do it easily today.
Well, it was great to be with you today, everyone.
I'm sure that you could learn a lot today if you were listening carefully.
So what did you learn?
So what did you learn today?
Maybe you can call your mom and see how she is doing today.
I'm sure she would like that.
Well, everyone, it was great to be with you.
I hope that you really did all learn a lot.
We'll see you next time for another lesson here on...
Let's Talk in English. Bye-bye.
(Music).
