Hello, everyone.
Welcome to today's English lesson here on Let's Talk in English.
My name is Nathan, and I am one of your teachers here on the show.
Today we have a new topic for you - TECHNOLOGY.
And our lesson is called: Hello? Can You Hear Me?
Hello? Can You Hear Me?
I think we're talking about calling people.
Katie, do you call people that are far away very often?
Ooh, yes, I do often call people far away.
When I'm traveling, I want to call my family.
So sometimes I have to call them and... they are really far away.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I'm your other teacher here on the show.
We've got a great lesson for you today.
Now let's practice our reading.
Find today's Read It in your LTE magazine and read with Katie now.
There is a big storm in England.
Mark's brother lives in England.
Mark is worried.
He can call his brother.
It is only 5 p.m. in London.
It's in a different time zone.
Mark can dial zero - one - one.
Then he can dial the country code, area code and phone number.
His brother picks up.
He is OK!
It sounds like this will be a great lesson if you call a lot of people in
different countries.
So it will be a great lesson for us, right, Katie?
Yes. We both need to call people in other countries.
We have both lived in different countries, so we call people that are far away.
But many people like to travel today.
I'm sure many of you have friends in different countries, too.
So this lesson should be useful.
And our key words will be useful.
Let's learn them now.
Hello.
(Chinese).
(Music).
What's wrong, Mark?
You look upset.
I'm worried.
There's a big storm in England.
My brother lives in England.
Oh, no!
Can you call him?
I can.
It's 5 p.m. in London.
It's in a different time zone.
But I didn't bring my cellphone to work.
You can use mine.
Can your cellphone make international calls?
Yes, it can.
It's simple.
(Music).
Megan's right.
Calling people far away is simple.
But understanding English is not always so easy.
Let's look at this conversation together.
Well, Megan can see that Mark is worried about something.
If you think your friend is sad or upset, you can quietly ask your friend,
"What's wrong?".
Then your friend might tell you if anything bad is happening.
But maybe nothing is wrong.
Your friend might just be thinking hard about something.
But something bad is happening for Mark.
Well, maybe.
There's a big storm in England where his brother lives.
And there's a great Use It in the sentence that Katie just said.
It's time for us to talk to Elizabeth.
(Music).
Today we're learning how to use the pattern:
There's a something in something.
So you could say: There's a cat in the house.
Meow.
Or... there is a gift in the bag.
Bye, friends.
Remember to use it.
(Music).
Well, there's a Use It sentence in all of our lessons, everyone.
They're good for practice and they are great to use for lots of things.
So use it.
But we need to keep talking about calling other countries.
That's right, that's what our lesson is all about.
So here's one thing that's important to remember:
When you call other countries, you might be calling a different time zone.
That's right.
When it is in the morning in one place, it's night somewhere else.
It might be 5 p.m. here, but it's 5 a.m. somewhere else.
Oh, that is very good to learn, Nathan.
12:01 at night to 11:59 in the middle of the day is a.m.
12:01 in the middle of the day to 11:59 at night is p.m.
But the most important thing to remember is not to call someone when they might
be sleeping.
Find out what time it is before you call.
Also, small countries may only have one time zone, but big countries usually
have many.
Like in the United States.
OK. Now I think it's a good time for today's Calendar Phrase.
You can use mine.
You can use mine.
(Chinese).
I don't have a pen.
You can use mine.
I don't have a cellphone.
You can use mine.
I don't have a laptop.
You can use mine.
I don't have a credit card.
Well, you can't use mine!
You can use mine.
You can use mine.
(Chinese).
If you use that Calendar Phrase, you're probably a very kind person.
Megan was very kind to let Mark use her phone to make an international call.
Yes. International calls are not cheap.
And why don't we learn a little more about them from Christina?
(Chinese).
What do I do first?
Dial zero - one - one.
OK. That's the international phone call number from the U.S.
Right.
Then dial the country code.
England's code is 44.
Then I dial the phone number?
No. Dial the area code first.
Dial the phone number after the area code.
Great. Thanks!
(Music).
Well, I hope you were listening carefully, everyone.
Megan was teaching Mark how to make international calls.
But we can all learn from her, too.
Yes, we can.
There are some special things you have to do for international calls that might
be easy to forget.
The first thing to do is...
You have to...
You should...
Uh, I think Nathan already forgot.
What's the first thing, Nathan?
I... I know it.
I know it.
I just have to remember.
It's a special number for making international phone calls.
But what's it called?
Well, it's called the international phone call number.
Every country has one.
The number for the United States is...
I remember that part.
The number is 911.
No! No, Nathan.
Don't call 911 when you want to make an international call in the U.S.
You should call zero - one - one.
Right.
Well, I... I guess I need to listen more carefully.
But after zero - one - one, I think there was a code, right, Katie?
Oh, good job, Nathan.
You got that part right.
But what code is it?
Hmm. Well, there was more than one code?
Oh. Oh, no.
Uh, let's see.
OK.
I think we should let Nathan think a little.
Right now Christina can teach us more about the key word: code.
(Chinese).
Well, that's a lot of codes, Christina.
Uh, but which code is for calling another country?
Well, what do you think it should be called, Nathan?
Well, country code would be easy to remember.
Hey, I think that's it.
Aww, I knew you would get it.
So after you dial zero - one - one, you should dial the country code.
And then there's one more code.
Oh, why are there so many codes?
I can't remember that many.
Well, if you want to call the right phone... the right place, you need to
remember them.
The next code is called the area code.
Each country has many area codes.
Oh. OK. Katie, OK.
This is too much.
I need to take a break.
We'll be back very soon,everyone.
