Welcome back, everyone.
Today we're talking about calling other countries on the phone.
But there's a lot to remember when you do that.
That's right.
If you call another country, you have to remember the international country
code.
And then you have to remember the area code because there are many different
area codes in a country.
And I think we'll learn even more about making international calls in
Conversation C right now.
Hi, Mark. Did you call your brother?
Did he pick up?
Yes. Thank you!
He's OK.
That's great!
Yes, it is.
But his town has 18 inches of snow!
Wow! That's a lot of snow.
Does he like snow?
My brother loves snow.
He's happy!
Mark's brother is not only OK, but he's happy after the storm.
The storm made it snow a lot.
And he loves snow.
Katie, do you like snow?
Ooh. I love snow.
I think it's so pretty when there is snow outside.
Now many of you may not have seen snow before.
But if you can, you should see what it's like.
It's true that some people don't like it, though.
It's cold and it can make extra work for you.
But it can be a lot of fun, too.
That's right.
But the town that Mark's brother lives in got 18 inches of snow.
That's a lot.
Many people will have to get the snow out of their way.
That's true.
It might get in the way of their cars or other things outside.
But let's talk about what 18 inches of snow means.
Oh, yeah. That might be a little hard to understand.
In the United States, we use inches to talk about how long or how high something
is.
That's right.
And if we say a place got 18 inches of snow, that means all the snow that came
in one day would be 18 inches high.
But the snow probably wouldn't really be that high, right, Nathan?
No. Probably not.
The snow could melt or it could blow away during the day.
Oh, I thought so.
Now even if you don't get snow where you live, this can be useful to you.
In English, we often talk about how many inches of rain we get, too.
So the next time it rains where you live, find out how much it rained.
Then try to say it in English.
It rained (blank) inches today.
Ugh. No, thank you, Nathan.
I don't want to do math like that.
That's not fun at all.
Well, it would be good practice, and practice is important.
So let's practice our key words together now.
Here's the first key word for today.
time zone.
time zone.
What time zone is New York in?
dial.
dial.
Dial Katie's phone number.
zero.
zero.
What number is after zero?
code.
code.
What is the country code for Canada?
pick up.
pick up.
Pick up the phone.
It's ringing.
OK, those are all of our key words for today.
Did you remember them all?
Practice them at home and your English will get better.
Right now, we're going to review our conversations for today.
What's wrong, Mark?
You look upset.
I'm worried.
There's a big storm in England.
My brother lives in England.
Oh, no!
Can you call him?
I can.
It's 5 p.m. in London.
It's in a different time zone.
But I didn't bring my cellphone to work.
You can use mine.
Can your cellphone make international calls?
Yes, it can.
It's simple.
What do I do first?
Dial zero - one - one.
OK. That's the international phone call number from the U.S.
Right. Then dial the country code.
England's code is 44.
Then I dial the phone number?
No. Dial the area code first.
Dial the phone number after the area code.
Great. Thanks!
Hi, Mark. Did you call your brother?
Did he pick up?
Yes. Thank you!
He's OK.
That's great!
Yes, it is.
But his town has 18 inches of snow!
Wow! That's a lot of snow.
Does he like snow?
My brother loves snow.
He's happy!
(Music).
Well, Ginger, why are you so happy today?
I'm going to call my mom.
Hooray!
Oh. Well, where does your mom live?
She lives in the jungle.
Ooh. What does your mom do?
She swings from trees.
Ahhh...
Oh. Well, that's nice.
Yeah. And I'm going to call her.
Well, that's a good idea.
Yeah. So here I go.
I'm calling my mom.
OK. Go ahead.
Mom, Mom, I love you, Mom.
Ginger, I don't think your mom can hear you.
OK. I'll call louder.
Mom! Mom!
Ginger, why don't you use a phone and call your mom?
Here.
Oh. A phone.
Why didn't I think of that?
Now what's her number?
(Music).
Learning songs is another great way to practice your English.
It's fun and it can teach you some good words.
I love learning songs.
So, do your best to learn our Song Time while you hear it this month.
But we also hope you can remember all of the great key words and phrases that we
talked about today, too.
Yes. I hope I can remember how to call another country.
I might need to practice a little bit more.
There were so many numbers and so many codes.
Do you remember them all?
Man, there are a lot to remember.
But I'm sure that you can remember all the ways to call another country if you
review in your magazine.
So thanks for joining us today, everyone.
We'll see you for the rest of our TECHNOLOGY lesson tomorrow.
There's still a lot to learn about making international calls.
So see you next time here on...
Let's Talk in English.
Bye-bye.
(Music).
