You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at the LTE TV studio.
My name is Katie, and we're ready to learn a lot of great English with you
today.
Our topic is still PETS.
So we have part two of our lesson - Birds.
Birds.
Nathan, do you think that you would want a parrot for a pet?
Oh, I haven't thought about that before.
It might be fun to have a parrot as a pet.
Maybe you can teach it to say some things.
And it's always fun to watch parrots.
Hello, everyone, my name is Nathan.
It's great to be here with you today.
All right, well, let's get started with our lesson for today.
Find your magazine and turn to today's Read It.
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Ken caught Sunny and fed him a treat.
Rob sees Ken with Sunny.
Rob is glad.
He must give Sunny back to Susie.
Sunny is not Susie's bird.
She is borrowing him from a friend.
She will interview the friend about birds.
Rob tells Susie about Sunny.
He was quiet.
He flapped his wings a little.
Well, Rob and Susie must be so glad that Ken and Carol found Sunny.
I would have been so worried.
Me, too!
And Sunny isn't even Susie's bird.
That would have been very bad if they couldn't find him.
Well, that's right.
Now Susie will ask her friend questions about the bird.
So I bet that they will learn a lot from her friend.
But Sunny was quiet when Rob had him - at least he didn't make a lot of noise.
That's true.
Well, right now we need to go learn our key words for today with our word lady,
Christina.
Hello.
(Chinese).
(Music).
OK, I caught it.
Don't fly away now, birdie.
Whose bird is it?
I don't know.
Should I feed it something?
It might like a treat.
Here, give it some of my apple.
Ken! I'm so glad!
You caught Sunny!
Whose parrot is it?
Susie is borrowing him from a friend.
I need to give him back to her.
Well, that's great.
Ken caught the bird.
That must have been really hard.
Yes. We talked about this yesterday.
Catching a bird would be really hard.
You have to grab it out of the air while it's flying.
Oh, well, good for Ken.
But this is weird, Nathan.
Why does he call Sunny "birdie"?
Oh. Well, that's just a nickname for birds.
Sometimes we call pets by little nicknames.
You might call a dog a "doggy" or a cat "kitty".
Not a "catty"?
Oh, OK.
So we can call a bird "birdie." That makes it sound cute.
But Ken and Carol still don't know whose bird it is.
But even though they don't know, they still feed the bird a treat.
Well, that's nice of them.
Sometimes we feed our pets treats.
Those are small things to eat.
You can give your dog a dog treat.
You can give your cat a cat treat.
But sometimes we can give ourselves a treat.
You can eat a cookie or a piece of cake as a treat.
Ooh, I love to eat sweet things as treats.
Ice cream is one of my favorite treats.
And pie is a great treat, too.
What's your favorite treat, Nathan?
Well, you already chose all of the best ones, Katie.
But (Chinese) is great, too, and it's hard to find in the United States.
You can eat healthy treats, also.
Maybe you should try that, Katie.
Well, healthy treats?
What kinds of foods are healthy treats?
Well, you know, uh... a piece of fruit is a healthy treat.
Fruits are sweet and healthy.
They're the perfect healthy treat.
Well, you're right, fruit does sound like a great healthy treat.
And that's what Ken gives to Sunny.
He gives him some of his apple.
See? Fruits are a good treat.
All right, now let's move on to Conversation B.
Thanks for watching Sunny, Rob.
You're welcome.
He was quiet.
He flapped his wings a little.
And he got away once.
How?
I forgot to close the cage.
Well, you found him.
I'm glad.
Actually, Ken caught him in the Jungle Cafe.
Sunny was eating some apple when I found him.
Well, I'll take him...
Sunny, come back!
(Music).
Sometimes when you have a pet, you might have to ask a friend to keep it for you
for a short time.
That's right. And that's called watching a pet.
You watch it to make sure nothing happens.
And if someone does that for you, make sure that you say thank you for watching
my pet.
And when someone says thank you, what do you say?
You say "you're welcome." And that's today's Calendar Phrase.
You're welcome.
You're welcome.
(Chinese).
Thank you for the card.
You're welcome.
Thank you for the flowers.
You're welcome.
Thank you for the candy.
You're welcome.
You're my favorite girl.
Oh. Thank you.
You're welcome.
You're welcome.
You're welcome.
(Chinese).
So be polite and say you're welcome.
Now Sunny is back in the cage.
And Rob tells Susie he forgot to close the cage.
That's a good sentence.
What did you forget to do?
Hmm.
I forgot to check the weather before I left the house.
I forgot to write my homework.
I forgot to bring my keys to work.
Oh!
And I forgot to study for my test.
Now if you forget to do something, you don't do it.
Rob forgot to close the cage.
But at least he found the bird.
Well, Ken caught the bird.
And then Rob uses our Use It sentence.
Sunny was eating an apple when I found him.
Now let's see what Elizabeth has to say about this sentence.
(Music).
Hi, friends.
Let's look at the pattern:
Someone was doing something when I found him / her.
For example: Jeff was playing cards when I found him.
Or... Karen was talking to the teacher when I found her.
So, now it's your turn to use it.
(Music).
Well, that is a great sentence.
Sometimes we do two things at the same time.
So it's good to use that sentence.
That's right.
Now Susie needs the bird back.
But, ugh, Sunny flies away again.
What a naughty bird.
He keeps flying away.
I hope Susie can catch him.
Well, I think we will probably find out later.
But right now Christina wants to talk to you again about the phrase: watching an
animal.
So let's go to her now.
(Chinese).
Thanks, Christina.
Well, there's more to today's story.
But right now we need to take a break.
We'll be back in just afew minutes.
