Thanks for coming back, everyone.
Today we have a SPORTS lesson and we are talking about Sports in the Olympics.
And we already met an Olympic athlete, Sasha the skater.
That's right.
And Sasha the skater has won a gold medal.
And she practices a lot.
Do you remember how much she practices?
Oh. There's a lot more to learn about Sasha in Conversation C.
So let's go there now.
But you don't compete now.
No, I'm a coach now.
I teach young skaters.
You must have a lot to tell them!
I do.
But I really just want them to enjoy the sport!
You can work hard and have fun, too!
Do you have any advice for young athletes?
Yes. Being an athlete is very hard work!
But if you love a sport, you should do it!
Well, maybe some of you today dream about being professional athletes.
And that's a great dream.
But think about Sasha's helpful advice.
Do you love your favorite sport?
It takes a lot of time and work to be an athlete.
If you don't really love the sport, maybe it's not what you should do.
And do you have talent for your sport?
That's important, too.
But if you really love your sport and you have talent for it, too, go for it!
But these are really important questions for all of us, not only athletes.
What do you really love to do?
What are you good at?
These things can help you decide what you want to do with your life.
We all want to do the things we love, right?
So what do you love?
You must have something that you love.
Everyone does!
And when we say that someone must do something, they have to do it.
But sometimes we say this because we think that something has to be true.
That's right.
Like, you must love some kind of music. I can't believe you don't like any
music.
Or you must have learned something in your math class. I can't believe that you
learned nothing.
So now we're saying that we can't believe there's nothing that you love to do.
But maybe you just don't know what it is yet.
And that's OK.
But you should think about it and find what you love.
We hope that everyone can work hard at what they love and have fun doing it.
That's right.
If you love what you do, then you will be happy going to work every day.
And we also hope that you work hard at your English.
We hope that you love learning English.
It's very important.
Well, right now let's review our key words.
The first key word is:
train.
train.
Barry is training to become a chef.
coach.
coach.
My coach says I need to practice more.
compete.
compete.
Ellen competes in many games.
gold.
gold.
Nathanael won the goal medal!
Thank you. Thank you.
proud.
proud.
I feel really proud of my good grade.
Well, we hope that you try to remember and use all of today's key words.
Now it's time to review today's conversations together.
(Music).
Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk!
Do you like the Olympics?
Well, on today's show, we are going to talk to a famous Olympic skater.
Please help me welcome Ms. Sasha Skater.
Sasha, you're a famous Olympic skater.
You won a gold medal at the Olympics several years ago!
I did. I feel very proud.
You should feel proud!
Not many people win a medal at the Olympics.
Well, all of the athletes work really hard.
I'm sure they do.
How many hours a day did you practice?
I practice five to seven hours a day.
Getting ready for the Olympics is a full-time job!
It really is.
I trained six days a week for many, many years!
When did you start skating?
I began lessons when I was 5 years old.
I had talent, so I took more lessons.
Then I started to compete in competitions.
Do you like being a skater?
I love it!
If I didn't love it, I couldn't work so hard!
(Music).
Uh, Ginger, what's this?
It's my gold medal.
Really! Did you win a gold medal?
Yes. And I feel so proud.
Feel proud.
Great.
Well, why?
Well, because not many monkeys win gold medals!
I know.
Athletes work really hard to get a gold medal.
Yeah. I trained six days a week.
Six days a week!
Yeah. Six days a week for two days.
For two days?
That's not even one week.
And I had a great coach.
OK, that's important.
So what is the gold medal for?
It's for winning!
Winning what?
What competition did you compete in, Ginger?
Banana eating!
What? Banana eating?
Yeah.
I knew it.
Yeah. I'm good at it.
Congratulations.
Yeah.
(Music).
Come on, ladies, let's move faster.
Lift up those legs. Come on.
Hi, there.
My name is Bill, and I'm a coach.
I coach a team of ball players.
It's not an easy job.
I need to help my team win.
And my team will only win if they play well.
That is why I need to work with my players every day.
My job is to make them the best players they can be.
They need to exercise a lot.
Practice, practice, practice.
My team needs to be faster and stronger than any other team.
I have to show them how to live healthy lives.
I tell my athletes to get up early to exercise and what they can and cannot eat.
I also show my athletes different ways to play so they can win games.
That kind of exercise is in the brain.
All right, enough talk.
Keep running, ladies.
Come on, faster, faster!
I'm a coach, and this is my job.
Faster!
And that's the end of our Olympic lesson this year.
Most people enjoy the Olympics.
So we hope that you enjoyed this lesson, too.
That's right.
So when you're watching the Olympics this year, try to review what you have
learned.
And maybe you'll be able to talk in English with some friends about the Olympic
games.
The Olympics only come every two years, so don't miss your chance.
And you can try watching some hockey or some skating.
Maybe you'll enjoy those sports more after we talked about them on the show.
Well, now it's time to say goodbye.
But we do hope that we will still see you here for more English fun tomorrow
on...
Let's Talk in English.
Bye-bye.
(Music).
