You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at the LTE TV studio.
My name is Katie, and we're very glad that you joined us for today's lesson.
Our topic is HEALTH.
And the title of our lesson is Ken's Cold.
Ken's Cold.
Nathan, how do you feel when you get a cold?
Well, I don't feel good at all.
You feel like you cannot breathe very well and sometimes your throat is really
sore.
Hello, everyone, my name is Nathan.
It's great to be here with you learning English today.
So let's get started learning.
Find your magazine and turn to today's Read It.
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Ken feels sick today.
His throat is sore.
He has a headache.
But he doesn't have a fever.
Ken probably has a cold.
Ken wants to go home, but he can't.
He has too much work!
But he can ask Carol.
Maybe Carol can send him home.
Oh, poor Ken.
Having a cold is not fun.
Your head hurts.
Your nose is stuffy.
And sometimes you have a fever, which means your body is really hot.
Yes. Having a cold is not good.
I don't know anyone who likes having a cold.
Well, I know I don't.
When I have a cold, I want to go home and stay in bed.
It's too hard to go to work when I'm sick.
And if you go to work with a cold, you might make your coworker sick.
Oh, that is a good point, Katie.
I think Ken should go home.
But he's staying because he has too much work.
Hmm. Well, I hope he gets to go home.
But right now we need to learn our key words for today from Christina.
Hello.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Hi, Ken.
Hey, you don't look very good.
Thanks, Susie.
You look sick.
Are you OK?
I have a cold.
Why don't you go home?
I can't.
I have too much work.
But I don't feel well.
Talk to Carol.
She will understand.
OK. I can do that now.
(Music).
What a way to start the day!
Susie tells Ken he doesn't look very good.
That's not very polite.
Well, I think she did it because he looks sick.
But most of the time it's not polite to tell people they don't look good.
Yes. It's like saying to someone you look tired today.
That's also not very polite.
That's right.
In the United States, it's more polite to ask someone if they are OK.
And that's what Susie says to Ken next.
Yes. If you see your friend and they look sick or upset, you can ask them, "Are
you OK?" That shows that you care.
And if you ask, "Are you OK?" it shows that you want to know what's wrong.
Well, then Susie gives Ken a good tip.
She says, "Why don't you go home?" Why don't you do something?
Why don't you take a rest?
Why don't you drink some water?
Why don't you have some soup?
Well, hey, those are all great ideas for someone who has a cold.
Maybe Ken should do those things.
Yeah, that's true.
Katie, what helps you feel better when you have a cold?
Oh, well, I think that drinking hot tea and trying to sleep makes me feel
better.
What about you?
Well, one thing you can do when you have a cold is take some vitamin C.
Now Susie thinks Ken should go home.
But he doesn't want to.
He has too much work.
Oh, sometimes this happens to us, too.
Sometimes we're sick, but we're too busy to miss work.
If you miss work, you don't have time to finish everything that you need to.
That's right.
But if you stay at work when you're sick, you probably won't work very well.
Well, I'm glad Ken's going to talk to Carol.
And we can do something now.
We can learn something from Christina.
(Chinese).
(Music).
What's wrong, Ken?
You look terrible!
Thanks, Mark.
Are you feeling OK?
No. My throat is sore.
And I have a headache.
Then go home and go to bed!
I'm going to Carol's office now.
I'll ask her first.
Then I can go home.
Feel better soon!
(Music).
Well, now Susie isn't the only one talking about how Ken looks.
Mark says, "You look terrible!".
Oh, poor Ken.
He doesn't feel well and people are saying all those things to him.
I wouldn't like that.
No, I guess I wouldn't, either.
But I think everyone is trying to tell Ken he should probably go home.
Well, I guess.
But there is a nicer way to do it, I think.
Ken.. And Ken feels awful.
His throat is sore.
If your throat is sore, it hurts.
Other parts of your body can be sore, too, though.
Sometimes after a workout, my legs are sore.
After I go play tennis, my arms are sore.
But they feel better after a day or two.
And guess what?
That's today's Calendar Phrase.
Feel better soon.
Feel better soon.
(Chinese).
Achoo!
Oh. I have a cold.
Feel better soon.
Oh. I have a headache.
Feel better soon.
Oh. I have a fever.
Feel better soon.
Thanks. I'll try.
Good. You have work to do.
Oh. I don't feel better.
Feel better soon.
Feel better soon.
(Chinese).
When you've got a cold, though, your throat might get sore or your head hurts.
That's called getting a headache.
And you can get a headache a lot of different ways.
I often get a headache if I am on my computer for too long.
Nathan, do you get headaches often?
Actually, I don't get many headaches at all.
Now if you're not sick and you get a headache, you can try to drink a lot of
water.
That could help your headache go away.
Wow, this conversation is really making me feel so bad for Ken.
I hate getting a cold, don't you?
Yeah, it's not fun.
You get a headache and a sore throat and sometimes you have a fever.
But you are also so tired when you have a cold.
Yes. I think it's hard to do anything when you're sick, and that's why it's very
important to rest.
You have to take care of yourself.
But before Ken can go home, he has to ask Carol.
He says, "I'm going to Carol's office now." So let's learn about this sentence.
I'm going to do something now.
I'm going to go to the supermarket now.
I'm going to watch a movie now.
I'm going to study English now.
And I'm going to learn something now.
And I think we're going to learn more later.
But we're going to take a break rightnow.
