Hello, everyone.
We're so glad that you had time to join us today here on Let's Talk in English.
My name is Nathan.
I am one of your teachers here on the show.
Today we have a new topic for you.
HOLIDAY.
And our lesson is called Flowers, Cards and Hearts.
Flowers, Cards and Hearts.
Katie, which holiday do you think we're talking about today?
Well, Nathan, I think that we're going to be talking about Valentine's Day.
Valentine's Day is a holiday when you see a lot of flowers and hearts, and you
give cards to people.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I'm your other teacher here on the show.
We're glad that you joined us today.
Now it's time for you to open up your magazine and find today's Read It.
You can read along with Katie right now.
Rob's fans send him cards on holidays.
Valentine's Day is February 14th.
That's next week!
Ken wants to do something special for his girlfriend.
She is moving to Florida.
He can cook dinner for her!
He can also give her flowers and candy hearts.
Ken also has big news!
He's moving to Florida, too!
Well, Katie, you are right.
Today we are talking about Valentine's Day.
Now this holiday is on February 14th in the United States.
That's right.
So the holiday is one week from today.
It's a fun holiday.
You can celebrate with someone you love.
That's right.
I hope a lot of you get a chance to celebrate.
Right now, let's learn some key words with our word lady, Christina.
(Chinese).
You have a lot of cards there, Rob.
Yes. They're cards from my fans.
Valentine's Day is next week.
Is one from your girlfriend?
No, no.
My fans just like to send me cards on holidays.
You have great fans.
I know.
What are your plans for Valentine's Day?
My girlfriend is moving to Florida.
So I want to do something really nice.
Well, friends, when it's close to Valentine's Day, you can send some cards to
people you love.
You can send cards that say "I love you" on them.
That's right.
It's good to say "I love you" to someone on Valentine's Day.
Do you like to get Valentine's Day cards, Nathan?
Um, maybe from some people.
But Rob gets a lot of cards from fans.
They must really like him, Katie.
Well, Rob is a great TV show host.
Of course they like him.
I should send him a card, too.
Oh. Are... are you a fan of Rob?
Well, yes.
And his fans like to send him cards on holidays.
That's really nice of them to do for Rob.
Well, I think so, too.
Sending a card to someone shows them that you care about them.
Well, what other holidays can you send cards to people, too, Nathan?
Oh, that is a very good question.
You can send cards to people for Christmas, or you can send them a card on their
birthday.
That's right.
And you could also send a card to someone if they're sick.
That's called a get-well card.
Thank you, Katie.
Now we see another good sentence to use.
Rob asks Ken, "What are your plans for Valentine's Day?".
Yes. What are your plans for something?
Like, what are your plans for Christmas?
Or what are your plans for summer vacation?
Now Ken's girlfriend plans to move to Florida.
That's so far away.
I hope Ken is OK.
Me, too.
It's hard when someone you like a lot moves away.
But he's being really sweet.
He wants to do something nice for her.
Well, that's nice of him to think of it.
At least his girlfriend will know he thought about her.
OK. Let's see what else Ken has to say in Conversation B.
Why is she moving?
She starts a new job there next month.
She's really excited.
I'm glad!
You can make Valentine's Day really special.
You can cook her dinner!
Great idea!
I can cook her favorite dish.
She loves spaghetti.
Perfect!
Did you buy her a gift?
No, not yet.
I don't have any ideas.
So why is Ken's girlfriend moving?
She starts a new job in Florida next month.
Wow! That's really great for Ken's girlfriend.
That would be an exciting time for her.
Now have you ever had to move somewhere for a job, Katie?
Well, no.
I moved to Asia once.
But I didn't have a job there when I moved.
What about you, Nathan?
I have moved for a job.
But it was kind of like moving back home when I moved for my job.
Moving can be scary, though.
But Ken's girlfriend is excited.
She sounds very brave.
Well, yes, she does.
So Ken has to make this Valentine's Day really special.
If something is special, it is very important to you.
If a night or a holiday is special, it means you will remember it for a long
time.
Ken wants his girlfriend to remember this Valentine's Day.
Well, I think it will be special.
He decides to cook her dinner.
That's really nice.
Yes, it is.
And he decides to cook her favorite dish.
Spaghetti.
Katie, what's your favorite dish?
Ooh. Well, I like spaghetti, but I think my favorite dish is chicken spaghetti.
That's almost the same.
Do you have a favorite dish?
Oh, it's hard to choose.
But I like some Mexican food a lot.
It would probably be something Mexican.
So how can you make something special?
Well, Ken is making his girlfriend's day special by really thinking about what
she would like.
And I could make a gift for my mom special by finding something that she would
really like, too.
Yes. So anything special is important or nice.
Now sometimes on Valentine's Day you might buy gifts for people, too.
And now Christina has some other great things that she wants to teach us, too.
(Chinese).
Well, friends, we've learned a lot so far.
But right now we need to take a break.
We'll be right back, so don't go away.
