You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we're glad that you joined us for today's show.
Our topic is still EVENT.
So we have part two of our lesson The Olympics.
The Olympics.
Are you going to watch the Winter Olympics, Nathan?
Of course, Katie.
Everyone should watch some of the Olympics this year.
They only happen every two years.
Hello, everyone, my name is Nathan.
It's great to learn some more about the Olympics with you today.
Now, Katie, I'm guessing that you plan to watch some of the Olympics, too,
right?
Yes. I will definitely watch the Olympics.
I really like all the sports that they play at the Olympics.
And I like to watch some of my favorite athletes.
They're very good at what they do.
Now, Nathan, can you tell me what you're most excited about about the Olympics?
Oh, that's a good question.
There are a lot of good sports to watch.
But I do like watching the ski jump and I like watching some hockey, too.
Oh. Well, those sports both sound like a lot of fun.
I will like to watch those, too.
OK. Right now we need to go to Christina and learn all of our key words for the
day.
Hi.
(Chinese).
What do you know about the Olympics?
Here are some cool facts:
The first Olympic games were held in 776 B.C. in Greece.
But the international games we watch now began in 1896.
There are seven sports in this year's Olympics and 98 events.
The oldest athlete to win a medal was a man named Oscar Swahn.
He was 72!
The youngest athlete to win a medal was a 10-year-old boy from Greece.
Well, today we're going to learn even more about the Olympics.
There's a lot of good facts about the games.
Right.
And it's good to learn about the Olympics because the whole world is in the
Olympics.
So you should know a lot about it.
But first do you know what facts are?
We can tell you.
Facts are things that are true.
Like the sky is blue or birds fly in the sky or the grass is green.
Right.
Facts are never wrong.
So tell me about a fact that's in our Read It, Katie.
Well, there are a lot of them.
And I can tell you the first Olympics were held in 776 B.C. in Greece.
Great job!
And the word "held" in this lesson is very important.
It means that the first Olympics happened in 776 B.C.
Sometimes we use the word "held" to mean that we carry something in our arms.
But this "held" means that something happened.
And I can also say that an event is going to be held at a certain place.
Like the 2008 Olympics were held in Beijing.
Or the party will be held at Sam's house.
Oh. Well, those are good examples.
Now we find out that there will be seven sports in this year's Olympics and 98
events.
Wow. That's a lot of events.
I guess that means that people at different levels will play against each other.
Hmm. That's true.
And here's another great thing about the Olympics.
If you're in the Olympics, you can win a medal.
Oh, that's true.
People win medals if they win first, second or third place.
That's really important.
Well, there was a lot to learn from Read It.
But now it's time for Conversation A.
Hi, Mark. You're working late.
I know.
I'm searching for information about the Olympics.
I'm doing a report on the Olympics tomorrow.
That sounds interesting.
It's really interesting.
There are a lot of cool facts!
Like what?
The first modern Olympic games were held in 1896.
The first Winter Olympics were held in 1924.
The Olympics started in Greece, right?
Right.
(Music).
Mark wants to know even more facts about the Olympics.
He's searching more things to know about the games.
Now when you search for something, you look for it.
If I want to know more about something like a place, I often search for the
information online.
Yeah.
If you're going on a trip, you search for information about the place you're
going to visit.
Or if you're doing a report in school, you need to search for information for
your report.
And Mark needs to know more facts.
He's doing a report about the Olympics tomorrow.
Well, that will be a great report.
I definitely want to watch it.
I would, too, Katie.
And I think there are even more interesting facts than the ones we saw in Read
It today.
Do you think so?
Like what?
Hmm. Well, before I tell you, let's learn about that Calendar Phrase.
Like what?
Like what?
(Chinese).
I'm looking for information.
Like what?
Information about people.
Like what?
Secret information.
Like what?
Like telephone numbers.
Like whose?
Like yours!
Oh!
Like what?
Like what?
(Chinese).
Well, now that I know that Calendar Phrase, I definitely feel ready to learn
some more.
Well, let's do that then.
The next fact in Conversation A is that the first modern games were held in
1896.
And modern is a great word for us to talk about.
If something is modern, it is pretty new.
I call my cellphone modern because it is like a lot of cellphones that have been
made recently.
Or my computer is modern because it is a new style of computer.
But today we learn about the modern Olympic games.
OK. So I think our friends here mean that the Olympics that started in 1896 are
the modern kind.
The Olympics before the year 1896 were different.
Right. That's a good fact to know.
Maybe you want to search for more facts, and Christina can help you with that
word "search".
(Music).
(Chinese).
OK. I think we all learned a lot from Christina.
Right now we need to take a short break.
Don't goaway.
