Welcome to the show, everyone.
We're sure there's a lot for you to learn here today.
My name is Nathan, and I am one of the teachers here on Let's Talk in English.
Today we have a great topic for you.
EVENT.
This lesson is The Olympics.
The Olympics.
Katie, have you ever been to the Olympics?
Oh, no. I have never been to the Olympics.
But I really want to go watch the Olympics someday.
That would be so fun.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I am your other teacher here on the show.
I'm very glad that you all joined us today.
Now it's time to practice our reading.
Find your Read It in today's lesson in your magazine, and read it with Katie
now.
The Winter Olympics is almost here!
Rob is hosting a party on Friday.
Everyone can come over and watch the opening ceremony together.
Then they can cheer for their favorite athletes and teams.
Before the party, Rob and Megan go to the Olympics website.
They can learn more about the sports at the Olympics.
Oh, the Olympics!
The Olympics are such a fun event.
Don't you like the Olympics, Katie?
Well, yes, I do.
I love watching the Olympics.
Do you like the Summer Olympics or the Winter Olympics more, Nathan?
Oh, that's kind of a hard question.
But I think I like to watch more of the sports during the Summer Olympics.
But it's a really special time in the world when we have Olympics.
You can watch all your favorite athletes from different countries.
That's right.
And we can learn all of our key words today right now with Christina, our key
word lady.
Hello.
(Chinese).
Hi, Megan.
Are you coming to my Olympics party on Friday?
What kind of party?
The Winter Olympics starts this Friday.
We can watch the opening ceremony on TV together!
That sounds fun!
I don't know much about this year's Olympics.
The games are in Russia.
And they last until February 23.
I plan to watch the games every night after work!
Rob wants Megan to come to his Olympics party.
And he asks her a great question.
Are you coming to something at some time?
That's right.
Like: Are you coming to my school graduation on Saturday?
Are you coming to the movie on Friday?
Or are you coming to the school event on Wednesday night?
Thanks for the examples, Katie.
Now what kind of party is it?
Well, that reminds me of today's Calendar Phrase.
What kind of party?
What kind of party?
(Chinese).
I'm having a party.
What kind of party?
I'm having a big party.
What kind of party?
I'm having a fun party.
What kind of party?
I'm having a surprise party.
For who?
For you!
Surprise!
What kind of party?
What kind of party?
(Chinese).
So what kind of party is it?
It's an Olympics party.
Our friends are going to a party for the Olympics.
That sounds like so much fun.
Yeah. I think Olympic parties are fun, too.
The Olympics are very special.
There are Olympic Games in the winter and in the summer.
And the Olympics are every two years.
The Winter Olympics are this year.
But the Summer Olympics won't be until 2016.
And these Olympics are in Russia.
It's really cold there. Have you been to Russia, Nathan?
No. I have never been to Russia.
I have heard that some places there are very cold.
And I think Russia is a great place to have the Winter Olympics.
Hopefully there's a lot of snow in that city.
That's right.
There's a lot of skiing and skating in the Winter Olympics.
You need a lot of snow and ice for the winter games.
And the Olympics go on for a couple weeks.
You can watch the games every night at home.
And that's when Rob says, "I plan to watch the games every night after work.".
Hey. That's today's Use It sentence.
Let's see what Elizabeth has to say about it.
(Music).
We're going to learn how to use the pattern:
I plan to do something every something.
For example, you could say:
I plan to clean my room every week.
Or... I plan to study English every night.
That's today's lesson.
And I hope you plan to use it.
Thanks, Elizabeth.
Now what do you plan to do every night?
Do you plan to watch the Olympic Games?
Well, I know I do.
Well, now we need to hear from Christina.
She wants to talk to you about the sentence: They last until February 23.
(Chinese).
Wow, you're a big fan!
What's your favorite Olympic sport?
I like them all.
But I especially like speed skating.
I like to watch the skiing.
Do you have a favorite athlete?
No, but I always cheer for the U.S.!
I do, too!
Now I'm getting really excited about the Winter Olympics!
Let's learn more about them online.
Wow, Rob is a big fan of the Olympics.
And Megan asks a great question.
What's your favorite Olympic sport?
Nathan, do you have a favorite Olympic sport?
Oh, it's a little hard to choose.
But one of my favorites in the winter is the ski jump.
They have to jump really high down a hill.
It's cool to watch.
But Rob really likes the speed skating.
Oh, I really like watching that sport.
Speed skating is when people skate around the ice as fast as they can.
It's really cool.
Yes, it is.
I can't believe how fast the skaters go.
And the skiing is also good.
The other great thing about the Olympics is that you can watch your favorite
athletes, too.
And athletes are people who play sports.
There are lots of different kinds of athletes.
You can be a football athlete, a tennis athlete, a badminton athlete.
And Jeremy Lin is a famous athlete.
He's a basketball athlete, of course.
Who is your favorite athlete?
Well, that is a great question.
And when you watch the Olympics, you can cheer for your country.
That's when you say, "Go! Go! Go!" or "Good job." I usually cheer for the United
States.
Well, sure.
You're supposed to cheer for the country you come from.
You want people from your country to win.
I'm excited about the Olympics now.
Oh, me, too.
I'm really excited to watch all the games.
Hey. That's a great sentence pattern.
Hmm. I'm getting excited about something.
Let's try another.
I'm getting excited about the school play.
I'm getting excited about going to the museum.
I'm getting excited about my trip to a different country.
I'm getting excited about learning more languages.
That's a good sentence.
What are you getting excited about?
I know.
You're getting excited about learning something with Christina now.
(Chinese).
Well, that was great.
And I'm getting excited about something else.
It's time for us to take a break.
So we'll be right back.
Don't goaway.
