Welcome to today's English lesson, everyone.
It's great to see you here today.
My name is Nathan.
I am one of your teachers here on Let's Talk in English.
Today we have a new topic for you.
HOME.
And our lesson is called Something Smells!
Something Smells!
Katie, what do you do when you smell something bad at home or at work?
Well, if I smell something bad or at home or at work, I try to figure out what
smells bad and then I get rid of it as fast as I can.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I'm your other teacher here at the show.
We're so glad that you joined us today.
And now we want you to open up your Let's Talk in English magazine and find
today's Read It.
You can practice your reading with Katie right now.
Something smells bad in the kitchen.
Rob tells Carol about it.
The trash doesn't smell.
The sink doesn't smell.
There are no dirty dishes in it.
Rob and Carol go to the kitchen.
They check the refrigerator.
It's almost full.
What smells so bad?
Ah, I understand why our lesson is called something smells now.
There is a bad smell in the office, but they don't know what it is, Katie.
Well, it's probably coming from the kitchen, though.
Bad smells often come from there.
And the word "smell" can be a thing or an action.
And I think you're right, Katie.
But why does the kitchen sometimes smell bad?
Well, because there's food in the kitchen.
And food starts to smell bad if no one eats it.
Well, we'll see what smells bad sometime.
But right now we need to talk about our key words with Christina first.
Hi.
(Chinese).
Hi, Carol.
Here are some papers for you.
Thank you, Rob.
Do you need something else?
Well, did you go into the station's kitchen this morning?
No, I didn't. Why?
Something smells really bad in there.
What is it?
I don't know.
I checked the trash.
Nothing smelled in it.
(Music).
Oh. Rob found the smell this morning.
He wants to know where it's coming from.
Well, I think he knows where it's coming from, Nathan.
He says it smells really bad in the station's kitchen.
I'm not surprised.
I know, I know.
You already said that the smell was probably coming from the kitchen.
But what is the station's kitchen?
Oh, that just means the kitchen at the TV station.
A TV station makes many shows to put on TV.
LTE TV is a TV station.
And the kitchen there smells bad.
OK, I understand now.
And Rob knows that the kitchen smells bad.
But he doesn't know what smells bad in the kitchen.
Oh, and now they want to find out what smells bad.
What could it be?
Well, it could be the trash.
The trash smells bad quickly.
But Rob already checked the trash.
So the trash doesn't smell bad.
Oh. And if you check something, you go to look at it.
You want to know if it has changed in some way.
And Rob wanted to know if the trash had started to smell, but nothing in it
smelled.
Now, Nathan, I know that's what Rob said.
But I don't believe it.
I'm sure something in the trash smelled.
Maybe it didn't smell bad, but... but...
Oh. Katie, I... I see what you mean.
Something can smell good or smell strange or... or smell strong.
Yeah. It' doesn't always have to smell bad.
Right.
But if you say something smells, you mean that it smells bad.
No one says something smells when it smells good.
Oh, of course.
I knew that.
But wait, what do we say if we want to know what smells good?
Hmm. Well, you could say, "What's that smell?" Uh, then the smell could be good
or bad.
Or you could say, "What smells so good?".
Oh, well, that's good to know.
And now Christina has some other great things that she wants to teach us, too.
(Chinese).
Did you check the sink?
Did someone leave garbage or dirty dishes in it?
No. There wasn't anything in the sink.
Good!
Does the sink smell?
No. It didn't smell.
I'm glad.
But something smells in the kitchen.
Let's go look for it.
OK.
Can I meet you in the kitchen in 5 minutes?
Sure! See you there.
(Music).
Sounds like Rob really looked around to find where the smell was coming from.
He checked the sink, too.
Right! And the smell wasn't coming from the trash or the sink.
Why is the sink a good place to check, Katie?
Well, sometimes people leave dirty dishes in the sink.
Does anyone do that at your house, Nathan?
Hmm... sometimes.
But the dishes in the sink aren't too dirty.
It's better to wash dishes right after you use them, though.
Oh, that is true.
Now, listen, everyone.
Wash your dishes right after you use them.
They're easier to wash then, and that won't make the bugs come, either.
And they won't smell.
Don't leave garbage in your sink, either.
Just put it in the trash.
Now some of you may think that trash and garbage are the same.
And you're right.
They are different words for things that we can't use and we just need to throw
away.
But if you put something in the trash or in the garbage, you are putting it in a
can or a bag with other trash.
Yes. So make sure you remember that.
And don't leave anything in the sink.
If you leave something somewhere, you stop taking care of it.
You can leave your homework on your teacher's desk.
Some people always leave their work projects at the office, too.
So did you leave anything somewhere today?
Try to answer that question.
Oh. Have you ever come home from school and you see that you forgot something?
You look in your bag and there isn't anything in it.
Isn't anything?
Nathan, can't you say there's nothing in your bag?
Well, sure. They mean the same thing.
There isn't anything in it and there's nothing in it.
They mean the same thing.
Oh, OK.
Hey. I wonder if Rob and Carol will find anything in the kitchen.
Well, I don't know.
But we'll see them there.
Hey, that sounds like our Calendar Phrase.
See you there.
See you there.
(Chinese).
I'm going to the movies.
See you there.
I'm going to the gym.
See you there.
I'm going to the store.
See you there.
Then I'm going home.
See you there.
Yeah. See you everywhere!
See you there.
See you there.
(Chinese).
Well, that's great to say if you will see someone later.
Hey, we're going to take a break.
So I can say, "See you here in a fewminutes!"
