Welcome back.
I'm sure you all know that it's Chinese New Year's Day.
Did you celebrate last night?
I hope you had some fun.
Sometimes for Chinese New Year children are given red envelopes from their
parents.
That's a great tradition for this holiday.
Well, now we need to see what else happens in Conversation C.
So let's go there now.
Some cities have parades at Chinese New Year.
Yes. There is usually a really big dragon in the parades.
Right!
People carry it and make it move.
That's fun to watch.
Too bad there isn't a parade in our town.
I know.
But we'll still have fun celebrating.
We'll eat dumplings.
Want to join us, Susie?
Sure! I love dumplings, too!
I guess a lot of people in the office at LTE TV will have some Chinese New Year
fun.
There are so many things you can do this time of year.
Yeah. Maybe they can go to a Chinese New Year parade.
There are so many things to see at a parade.
There might be people dancing, marching or playing music.
And many people are dressed up in traditional clothes.
It's so colorful.
And there's so much to see.
And then there are the dragons.
Yes, the dragons are a lot of fun, too!
At Chinese New Year, the dragons... uh...
Nathan, I just remembered something!
You did?
What did you remember?
Well, yesterday we were talking about what the animal of the year that I was
born in, remember?
Oh, yeah, you said you were born in the Year of the Cat.
I... I... I know.
But now I remember.
I was born in the Year of the Dragon.
Oh, really!
Well, you should be very glad.
Dragons are very good animals in Chinese culture.
Well, but... but I always thought dragons were kind of scary.
Aren't they very mean?
They like to breathe fire and burn things.
Well, those are different dragons.
In the stories we hear about dragons, they usually are very bad.
But they are good and lucky creatures in Chinese culture.
Oh, really?
Oh, that's good to know.
Well, then the Year of the Dragon should be a good year to be born in.
I think so. But Katie, I just remembered something, too.
There won't be a parade in their town.
They can't see all the fun things that we've been talking about.
Oh, that's too bad there isn't a parade.
But at least Christina has something else to teach us today.
She wants to teach you about the sentence:
Too bad there isn't a parade in our town.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Thanks for that help, Christina.
It's always great to hear from you.
Try to use that phrase today, everyone.
Well, hey, I think I can use this phrase:
Too bad there isn't much time left for today's lesson.
That's very good, Katie.
Well, not very good.
We're not glad the lesson is almost over.
But it is time to practice our key words now.
Here's your first key word for today.
parent.
parent.
My parents love me very much.
stay up.
stay up.
Jill stayed up really late last night.
firecracker.
firecracker.
Those firecrackers are really loud.
midnight.
midnight.
Are you going to stay up until midnight?
dragon.
dragon.
Dragons are important animals in China.
OK. Those are all the key words that we have today.
So make sure that you practice them at home.
Right now we're going to review today's conversations.
Why is fish a lucky food?
Well, the Chinese word for fish is "yu." That sounds like the Chinese word for
"riches.".
Oh! So people want to have riches in the new year.
That's right.
And children do get riches.
They do?
Yes! Children get red envelopes from their parents and other adults.
The envelopes have money in them!
Chinese New Year is a fun holiday.
I really loved it as a child.
Why?
Because you got red envelopes?
Yes.
And because we could stay up really late on Chinese New Year's Eve.
And we had firecrackers at midnight to start the New Year.
Was it really loud?
Oh, yes!
Everyone had firecrackers.
It was lots of fun.
Some cities have parades at Chinese New Year.

Right!
People carry it and make it move.
That's fun to watch.
Too bad there isn't a parade in our town.

But we'll still have fun celebrating.
We'll eat dumplings.

(Music).
Monkey Man, why are you holding a fish?
Because fish is a lucky food for the new year.
Why?
Well, the Chinese word is "yu.".
Me?
No, not "you." "Yu." It sounds like riches in Chinese.
Oh. Hey, Monkey Man, I like staying up late.
Me, too.
I like to hear the fireworks at night.
Yeah, it's noisy.
What else?
Well, we can watch a big parade.
Yeah. Anything else?
Sure!
Little monkeys get red envelopes.
And Ginger, this red envelope is for you.
Hooray!
What's inside?
Money, of course.
Money!
Ginger, Ginger, what's wrong? What's wrong, Ginger?
I don't want money. I want a banana.
Oh. I thought you might say that.
Hey, Ginger, here you go.
Happy New Year.
Hooray! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, everyone.
Happy New Year to you.
Uh, Rachel, are you busy?
Uh, yes, Mr. Smith, I'm doing all the things you asked me to do.
Well, I need someone to look through this big pile of papers on my desk.
Uh, well, I'm writing emails, making phone calls, helping you plan your big
meetings next week...
You are doing a lot.
It's not a good thing that... there isn't...
Oh, I need Super Sentence Man.
And Super Sentence Man is here.
Today's super sentence is...
Too bad there isn't something.
You want to say:
Too bad there isn't anyone to look through my papers.
Too bad there isn't anyone to look through my papers.
Great!
Now before I go, can you give me this super sentence in another way?
Hmm...
Too bad there isn't any good news on TV today.
Too bad there isn't any good news on TV today.
Excellent!
What about you, Rachel?
Can you give me a super sentence?
Too bad there isn't a day off tomorrow.
Too bad there isn't a day off tomorrow.
A super sentence.
Remember, a super sentence every day will make your English great.
Now, as I was saying, Rachel, it's too bad there isn't anyone to look through my
papers.
Mr. Smith, would you like me to look through your papers?
Oh, would you do that for me?
That would be wonderful!
Thank you, Rachel.
Oh, here you go.
No problem, Mr. Smith.
That's the end of our show for today, everybody.
I hope that you can go out and celebrate Chinese New Year with your friends and
family today.
Yes, it's great to spend some time learning English.
But this time of year is special.
There are so many fun traditions that you can be part of.
Right.
Have some lucky food like fish or dumplings.
And use some firecrackers.
Maybe you can get some red envelopes, or, even better, give some red envelopes.
Or you can go to a parade and see the dragon dance.
Well, whatever you do, we hope that you have a lot of fun.
But right now we have to say goodbye.
We will see you next time right here in the LTE TV studio for...
Let's Talk in English.
(Chinese).
(Music).
