Welcome back.
Today we're talking about holidays.
And today is Chinese New Year's Eve.
So that means that it is the day before the new year.
And remember, this holiday is on the lunar calendar, so it happens on different
days of the year.
That's right.
So maybe tonight you can celebrate.
But right now we need to go see what happens in Conversation C.
I think about my family at this time of year.
Me, too.
My family gets together at Chinese New Year.
Mine, too.
And my mom cooks a big dinner!
What does she cook?
She cooks lots of good food.
We always have fish.
Why?
Some foods are lucky for Chinese people.
Fish is one of them.
Lucky food.
That's interesting.
I don't know if we have any lucky food in America.
Well, Chinese people really think fish is a lucky food.
And it's important to have the whole fish.
Wait a minute.
You mean you need to eat all of it with the head and the tail?
Well, you... you don't have to eat it all, but the whole fish should be on the
table.
The head and the tail mean a good start and end to the year.
Oh. I see. Hey, I think that now is a great time for today's Calendar Phrase.
We always have fish.
We always have fish.
(Chinese).
Do you have fish?
Yes. We always have fish.
Do people often order fish?
Yes. We always have fish.
Is your fish delicious?
Yes. We always have fish.
Is eating fish lucky?
Not for the fish.
We always have fish.
We always have fish.
(Chinese).
I really like fish.
But if I always had fish, I might get tired of it.
It's a lucky food for Chinese New Year, though.
It might be lucky, but not everyone really likes fish.
Are there other lucky foods to eat instead?
Hmm, yes, there are lots of lucky foods.
Hmm, what else is there?
Oh! Well, dumplings are actually a lucky food, too.
They look a little like the old style of Chinese money.
Oh. Well, now I know why Mark is going to eat them.
Now sometimes we say there are lots of things to mean that there are many of
them.
Right.
We could say there are lots of traditions this time of year in Asia.
Now this time of year means this part of the year, like winter or summer or
spring, or maybe just one month during the year.
That's right.
So we could also say that many families get together this time of the year.
That means that many families spend time together during this part of the year.
And for the United States, there is a lot of snow this time of year in some
places.
For us, there are a lot of key words to review at this time of the show.
Can you remember today's key words?
It's very important that you do.
So we want to spend some time now to practice them together.
Here is the first key word for today.
dumpling.
dumpling.
Josh likes to eat dumplings.
born.
born.
James was born in 1981.
horse.
horse.
Can you ride a horse?
cook.
cook.
What is Mom cooking for dinner?
fish.
fish.
Mike likes to eat fish.
All right. Those are all of the key words for today.
Did you remember to say them all?
Practice them at home and your English will get a lot better.
Now let's continue our review by watching all of today's conversations one more
time.
Are you celebrating tonight, Mark?
Yes, I will go out and get dumplings.
Where are you going?
I'm going to Tang's Jiao Zi House.
I love that place!
Can I go with you?
Sure!
We can celebrate together.
Uh, what are you celebrating?
Chinese New Year!
Tonight is Chinese New Year's Eve.
But Chinese New Year is in February.
Not always.
Sometimes it's in January.
Oh, right.
The lunar calendar isn't the same every year.
That's right.
And next year will be the Year of the Horse.
Will it be a good year?
I think so.
I was born in the Year of the Horse!
I think about my family at this time of year.
Me, too.
My family gets together at Chinese New Year.
Mine, too.
And my mom cooks a big dinner!
What did she cook?
She cooks lots of good food.
We always have fish.
Why?
Some foods are lucky for Chinese people.
Fish is one of them.
(Music).
Well, Ginger, why are you so excited?
It's New Year's Eve.
New Year's Eve!
Oh, no!
Yeah, yeah. It's Chinese New Year's Eve.
Isn't that in February?
Not always. Sometimes it's in January.
Oh, like this year.
Yeah. Ooh, ooh, it's the Year of the Horse.
Well, is that your favorite year?
No. My favorite year is the Year of the Monkey.
Yeah, me, too.
So, Ginger, how will we celebrate the new year?
Ooh, let's eat too much.
OK. What's on the menu?
Dumplings!
Ooh. What kind of dumplings?
Pork, beef and banana dumplings.
Banana dumplings.
Yeah, I knew it.
Yeah!
Yeah.
Hey, Larry.
Table 5, two cheeseburgers with salads, no pickles, OK?
Oh, hello.
My name is Lydia, and I am a waitress.
I work at a restaurant, and it can be very busy here at lunchtime.
People need to eat, so they often come to a restaurant.
When customers come in and sit down, I give them a menu like this one.
Then they tell me what they want to eat.
I usually write it down on a notepad.
Sometimes a waitress will remember the order and tell the cooks.
A good waitress will always be ready to serve the customers.
Sometimes I pour water or tea in their cups.
A waitress should also be very friendly.
In America, customers need to give a tip to the waiter or waitress.
If they really liked the food and service, they will give a nice, big tip.
Haha.
I like being a waitress.
I am a waitress, and this is my job.
Haha.
Table 8, steak and eggs.
Well, I'm sure there's much more that we could talk about for Chinese New Year,
but our time is almost over.
That's OK.
Tomorrow is Chinese New Year's Day.
The new year really starts, so we can talk about it some more.
Hey, Katie, I just remembered.
You didn't tell us which year you were born in.
You were born in the Year of the what?
Oh. Oh, no. I forgot to look. Oh.
Maybe I can still remember... Oh, oh, I think I was born in the Year of the Cat!
Hmm, uh, no, I... I don't think so, Katie.
The cat is not one of the twelve animals.
Really?
Are you sure?
Well, I guess I don't have to be born in the Year of the Cat.
Hmm, so what am I?
I guess I'll try to tell you tomorrow, OK?
But now we have to go. We're all out of time.
So we hope to see you tomorrow right here on...
Let's Talk in English.
Goodbye.
(Music).
