You're watching Let's Talk in English.
We have lessons here every day in English.
And we have a lot of fun, too.
My name is Nathan.
It's great to be here with you together today.
We want to continue our topic about ACTIVITIES.
This lesson is called Cleaning Day.
Cleaning Day.
Katie, what is your favorite way to clean?
Well, Nathan, that's a great question.
There are many great ways to clean.
But I think that my favorite way is dusting my desk.
That is a great way to clean.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I'm your other teacher here at the show.
We have a lot to learn today and I'm excited to get started.
So let's start with today's Read It.
Find it in your magazine and practice your reading with Katie.
There is a lot of stuff in the studio to clean out!
Ken needs help.
But who can help him?
Mark is mopping the floors.
Rob is organizing some old DVDs.
Maybe Susie can help.
Now she is sweeping.
Later she can bring her broom, soap and water to Ken.
They can clean the studio together.
Whew! Cleaning the studio would be a big job.
I think that it would not be easy and it might take some time, too.
You're right.
I think that cleaning a huge studio would take a lot of time.
Ken probably needs a lot of help from Susie.
Mmhm. Now yesterday, Carol and Megan were cleaning her office.
Let's see what Ken is doing today.
But first, let's talk to our word lady, Christina, about our key words.
OK.
(Chinese).
How is the cleaning going?
Not very well.
We have a lot of stuff in the studio.
How about you?
I'm cleaning the office area now.
What do you still need to clean in the office?
I just need to sweep the floor.
That's not bad.
You can finish that quickly.
After I finish, I can help you in the studio.
Well, that is very nice of Susie.
She knows that Ken has a lot to clean in the studio, so she says she can help
him later.
She will finish sweeping, and then she will go to help him.
That's right.
She's cleaning in the office, but she's almost done.
There probably are not so many things to clean there.
Well, there might be a lot of things to clean in the office, but there are
probably many more things to clean in the studio.
So what things do you think Ken will need to clean in the studio, Katie?
Well, I know one thing he will have to clean for sure.
Cameras.
Studios always have cameras, and you need to be careful when you clean them.
That is right.
You don't want to break a camera or get a camera wet when you're cleaning it.
I'm sure you also have to clean sets in the studio, too.
Sets are the places that cameras take video for shows.
That's right.
And Nathan and I are on a set right now.
Katie, don't tell them that!
Uh... Actually we're... we're not on a set.
We're... we're in space.
Nathan...
You see?
Nathan, everyone knows we're in a studio, on a set.
I'm just helping them understand the English words.
Ho, ho, ho... Oh, Katie, you're so funny.
Well, we... we really are in space, everyone.
You can look out the window!
Katie is just joking.
I'm not... I'm... Never mind.
Now Nathan and I both use the word "just." If you say that you just did
something, it's like saying you only did it.
It wasn't very important nor serious.
That's right.
Katie was just joking!
She was only trying to make you laugh.
What she said was not important and it wasn't even true.
Nathan, no one thinks that...
Oh! Forget it.
Nathan's just being silly.
Now why don't we see how things are going with Christina?
(Music).
(Chinese).
What are other people cleaning?
Mark is mopping the floors.
And Rob is organizing old DVD copies of our shows.
That sounds hard.
Maybe my job isn't so bad!
I'm glad we have cleaning day every year.
Yes. But I don't like cleaning.
I don't like cleaning, either.
But I hate messes!
I'll hurry and finish sweeping.
Then I can help you.
Well, on cleaning day, everyone has a job that they have to do.
They have to clean the area they work in.
And maybe there are other places they have to clean, also.
Just like Mark has to mop the floors.
He probably needs to clean his office, too.
But it's his job to mop.
You know, I did a lot of mopping when I was working one summer.
You did a lot of mopping for work?
Oh, do you mean you were a janitor?
That's a person who cleans for their job.
That's how they make money.
Oh, yes. I was kind of like a janitor.
I helped clean at a school a few times a week.
But I only had that job for one summer.
Oh, I see.
We all have to find summer job sometime.
Did you like cleaning?
Well, I got to work with people, so it was OK.
But I really had to do a lot of cleaning and sweeping and mopping and wiping...
OK.
I see.
But there are probably a lot of other jobs that aren't as good.
You might have to work outside in the hot sun or do something that makes you
really, really tired.
That's true.
Maybe that cleaning job wasn't so bad.
Well, hey! That sentence isn't bad, either.
It's today's Use It sentence.
So let's learn about it with Elizabeth.
(Music).
Now let's see how to use the pattern:
Maybe something isn't / aren't so something.
Here's an example:
Maybe this class isn't so hard.
Or you could say:
Maybe their lives aren't so great.
So, friends, remember to use it.
(Music).
Well, that's pretty easy.
Maybe English isn't so hard.
But if you still don't understand how to use this sentence, listen to Christina.
She will help you out, too.
(Chinese).
Don't forget to use that sentence today, everyone.
And don't forget to clean your house or where you work sometimes, either.
Not many people really like cleaning.
But we all need to clean sometimes.
It's not fun to clean for everyone, but it's even less fun when everything is
dirty.
Hey, Nathan, that reminds me of our...
Calendar Phrase.
I hate messes.
I hate messes.
(Chinese).
I see you cleaned the kitchen.
I hate messes.
I see you cleaned the living room.
I hate messes.
I see you cleaned the garage.
Yes. I hate messes.
So what will you clean next?
Myself!
I'm a mess.
Yeah.
I hate messes.
I hate messes.
(Chinese).
I hate messes, too.
But I love breaks when I need them.
Let's take a short break now.
Please come back and join us for the rest of today'slesson.
