You're watching Let's Talk in English.
Thank you for joining us here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we're excited to teach you a lot of great English today.
Our topic is ACTIVITIES.
And the title of our new lesson is Cleaning Day.
Cleaning Day.
Nathan, do you need to clean your office right now?
Oh, yeah, that might be a good idea.
I haven't cleaned my office in a little while.
Hello, everyone.
My name is Nathan.
It's great to learn some English together with you today.
So let's start learning together.
Take out your LTE magazine and find your Read It.
You can read it with Nathan right now.
The office is a mess!
There is dirt everywhere!
Today is cleaning day.
Megan is helping Carol clean.
Carol has a lot of old boxes of papers.
She can throw those away.
She and Megan can also clean her desk and wash her windows.
Everything is really dirty.
Carol is embarrassed.
But it's OK - everyone is cleaning today!
So everyone is cleaning today.
Why?
Because it's cleaning day.
So everyone will have to...
Katie, wait.
What... what is cleaning day?
Is it a holiday when everybody cleans?
I don't think I've ever heard of cleaning day, though.
No, no, Nathan, cleaning day is not a holiday.
It's just a day that the office chose for cleaning.
Everyone will use some time at work to clean their desk or their office.
So are other people cleaning where they work?
Well, just people at LTE TV.
But other places may choose a different day for cleaning.
Well, everyone needs to know our key words for today.
So it's time to give them a look.
(Chinese).
(Music).
This office is a mess!
I'm a little embarrassed.
Don't be.
Today is cleaning day!
Everybody's office is a mess.
I don't like cleaning day.
But we need it every year!
Dirt gets into small places.
We need to clean them!
I know.
Thank you for your help.
I like to clean!
Today will be fun!
Did you all hear that?
Megan likes to clean!
I didn't know people like cleaning.
Do you like cleaning, Nathan?
Well, I do like it a little bit.
If I can clean a lot of things quickly, it's kind of fun.
But I don't like it if something takes a long time to clean.
But some people really just like to clean.
Well, I know cleaning is important.
It's a good thing to clean, so I do.
But I don't really like it.
Everybody is different, I guess.
Yeah. Just look at Carol.
She doesn't like cleaning day, but she knows the office needs it.
I guess she let her office get a little bit dirty.
She is a little embarrassed.
Well, that's one of our key words today.
But it's also in our Calendar Phrase.
I'm embarrassed.
I'm embarrassed.
(Chinese).
This house is a mess.
I'm embarrassed.
There are things everywhere.
I'm embarrassed.
There are clothes everywhere.
I'm embarrassed.
And the mess is all yours.
Mine?
Oh, no. Now I'm really embarrassed.
I'm embarrassed.
I'm embarrassed.
(Chinese).
I hope you don't have to use that phrase too much.
But sometimes we need it.
But at least Carol isn't too embarrassed.
She just feels a little embarrassed.
We often feel something a little but not too much.
And when you do feel like that, you can use today's Use It sentence.
Here's Elizabeth.
(Music).
Hi, friends.
Today we're going to learn how to use the phrase:
I'm a little something.
For example:
I'm a little sad.
Awww.
Or:
I'm a little excited.
Yea!
And I'll be really excited if you remember to use it!
(Music).
Well, I hope you feel a little better about using that phrase now.
But we need to get back to the cleaning day.
Megan and Carol have to clean the dirt out of small places.
Really?
I thought they were cleaning the office.
Megan and Carol are going to small places to help clean?
I wonder where they'll go.
No, Nathan, I... I don't think you understand.
They're just going to...
Oh! Well, there's that.... that small town about twenty minutes away from the
city.
Maybe they're going to...
No, no, no, no. No. "Small places" doesn't mean small towns.
It just means little areas in the office, like the corners or at the side of the
windows.
Those small places are hard to clean, and they can be a mess.
Can you think of other small places?
Uh, I'm a little embarrassed.
Uh, why don't we go talk to Christina about that word "mess" instead?
(Chinese).
(Music).
So, where do we start?
You can clean out these old boxes of papers.
I can clean your desk.
Some of these papers are really old.
Why do I still have them?
Who knows?
Throw them away!
You're right.
I don't need them anymore.
This is a new year.
I want a clean office!
And now they've started cleaning.
Sometimes that's the hardest part of cleaning - getting started.
I know.
Sometimes I feel just like Carol.
There's so much to do, and I wonder where I should start.
That's not easy.
No, it's not.
When we say, "Where do I start?" we are really asking, "What should I do
first?".
Or someone might say, "I don't know where to start?".
If a place is really dirty, you might say that.
You might say, "I don't know where to start." You just don't know what to do.
But you can use that phrase for many things.
Nathan, what are some examples?
Well, maybe you have so much homework.
You don't know where to start.
Or you might just need to fix one big problem, and you don't know what to do, so
you say, "I don't know where to start.".
Well, that's true.
But some people are really good at starting to work.
They just choose something and they go for it.
Like Megan.
Yeah. She just starts working and tells Carol what she can do, too.
"You can clean out those boxes," she says.
She wants to get the work - the cleaning - done.
Hey, that's a good phrase.
You might need to clean something out.
It may not be dirty on the outside, but things need to be taken out of it.
And the inside needs to be cleaned.
Sometimes you need to clean out a box.
You take the things out and throw away what you don't need.
Sometimes you need to clean out a whole room.
You don't need the stuff inside the room anymore, so you take it out.
You won't use it again.
That's right.
Sometimes I clean out my closet.
That's another place where you can clean the inside and get rid of things you
don't need.
So I can throw the stuff away.
Or sometimes it's a good idea to give things that you don't want to a place that
needs them or can sell them.
Now Nathan, what are some good things that you can give away to other places?
Well, one great thing to give away is some of your clothes.
If you don't want them anymore, some places will take them and give them to
people who can use them.
And sometimes you can also give away furniture like a table or a chair that you
don't need.
Well, that can be hard work just like learning English.
So I think it's time for us to take a break.
We'll be back soon.
