Hello, everyone.
It's time to start today's English lesson here on LTE TV.
My name is Nathan, and it's great to be here with you today.
Our new topic today is CULTURE.
And our lesson is called Don't Be Rude!
Don't Be Rude!
Do you ever meet rude people, Katie?
Well, Nathan, sometimes I do meet rude people.
There are a lot of rude people out there.
But whenever I meet someone, I try to be nice to them so maybe they won't be
rude anymore.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I'm your other teacher here on the show.
We've got a great lesson today.
You're all going to learn a lot.
So right now, open up your magazine and find today's Read It.
You can read it with Katie right now.
Rob is hosting a guest.
The guest has bad manners.
He doesn't follow any of Rob's house rules.
The guest wears dirty boots in the house.
He also takes food from the refrigerator.
He doesn't ask first.
The guest is very messy, too.
He leaves his things around the house.
He doesn't appreciate Rob's kindness.
Rob is not having fun at home.
Someone is staying at his house.
Usually, it's fun to have someone stay with you for a few days.
But not for Rob.
Not this time.
Yes. This guest doesn't sound good at all.
You know that a guest is someone who is visiting a place.
Some guests have good manners and others have bad manners or no manners.
And Rob's guest has bad manners.
Well, let's see what happens next.
But first, we should talk about our key words with Christina.
(Chinese).
(Music).
(Background Noise).
You look upset.
Are you OK, Rob?
No. I'm not OK.
I'm really mad.
Why are you mad?
I am hosting a guest.
He is my sister's friend.
But he doesn't have any manners!
What do you mean?
What does he do?
He wears his dirty boots in the house!
I would not be happy if a guest did that at my apartment.
I'm not surprised that Rob is upset with his guest.
Yes. And he even looked very upset.
Usually, I don't think it's a good idea... idea to say, "You look upset," or
"You like tired." But I think Rob needed to talk to someone.
You're right, Katie.
Some people get upset when you say, "You look upset." It's often not best to say
that.
But if you think that your friend really is upset, you can ask if they're OK.
So Susie did the right thing.
Now Rob can talk to someone about the guest he is hosting.
I think that's a good word to talk about today, Nathan.
I think so, too.
If you take care of a guest, we say that you host them.
But we can also say that you are their host.
The word host is a thing to do and a person who has a guest.
Yes. And people don't only host at their home.
They can host a party or even a show.
But have you ever hosted a guest at your home, Nathan?
I have. And I usually really enjoy having guests.
It's fun to get to know your guest or spend some time with them.
But it's not always fun to have a guest for too long.
Oh, really?
What do you mean?
Well, I guess it's nice to get back to normal after a guest leaves.
You know, sometimes if you have someone staying with you for a long time, you
wish you could get back to normal.
But I think that you used today's Calendar Phrase.
What do you mean?
What do you mean?
(Chinese).
I'm really mad!
What do you mean?
I'm really upset!
What do you mean?
I'm really angry!
What do you mean?
I mean, "Ahhhhhhh!".
Oh. I see what you mean.
What do you mean?
What do you mean?
(Chinese).
Well, that's a great phrase to understand what someone is saying.
Sometimes you might need to use this question when you are in class and you need
to understand more about what is happening.
But Katie, we can't talk about this anymore.
Well, Nathan, what do you mean?
I mean it's time for us to watch Conversation B.
That's very rude.
Does he do anything else?
Yes! He takes food out of the refrigerator.
Then he eats it.
He doesn't ask first!
That's not nice.
He leaves his things around my house.
His clothes are on the couch.
His bags are on the floor.
So he is very messy.
Yes. He is not a considerate guest.
Rob told us that his guest does not follow the rules.
Like he wears dirty boots in the house.
You should take your shoes off when you go into someone's house.
Well, we don't always do that in America.
But everyone knows to take off dirty shoes.
But does the bad guest do anything else?
Oh, yes, he does.
Well, if someone asks you "anything else," they want to know if there are other
things you want to tell them.
And Rob has many other things to tell Susie.
The guest eats Rob's food without asking.
If you really need something, you should still ask first.
Remember, always ask your host first.
But some hosts are very nice.
They just say:
Feel at home.
Eat any food you want.
Use anything you want.
Yes. And that's being a very nice host.
But taking food out of your host's refrigerator without asking is not nice.
No. That is not nice at all.
But Christina is a very nice person.
And Nathan just used a phrase, and she wants to help us understand it right now.
(Chinese).
Well, that was very helpful.
You know, Katie, I'm sure that Rob would like someone to take his guest out of
his house.
Good one, Nathan.
And I would, too, actually.
He makes things dirty.
He takes things without asking.
And he leaves stuff around the house, too.
Right. All those things are terrible.
They mean he doesn't take care of his things.
He just makes a mess with them.
Or we could say he's messy.
Katie, is your room or your house messy?
Well, it's messy a little bit.
I do need to clean my room.
But, OK, we need to take a break from talking about this bad guest.
So we'll be back in a few minutes.
Don't goaway!
