Welcome to our show today, everyone.
We are so glad that you came here to learn some English together with us.
My name is Nathan.
It's great to be your teacher today.
Now today we have a new topic called CAREERS, and our lesson is called Police
Officer.
Police Officer.
Katie, do you know any police officers?
Well, Nathan, I do know one police officer.
My friend's dad is a police officer back home.
And he's a really great guy.
He takes care of the city and keeps us safe.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie, and I'm your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
We have a great lesson, and I hope that you're all ready to learn a lot.
Now let's get started by reading our Read It together.
It's in your magazine, and Katie will read it with you right now.
A police officer is at the Jungle Cafe.
He's looking for a robber.
The robber has a knife and is very dangerous.
He robbed a bank this morning.
How scary!
He's thin and has black hair.
He looks like John.
But John isn't a robber!
John was at the Jungle Cafe all morning!
The officer says, "Freeze!" Oh, no!
Officer, please let John go!
Wow, there are some exciting things going on here at LTE TV.
It's kind of like a movie!
Like a movie?
What do you mean?
Well, you know, there are cops and robbers like there are in movies.
Oh, you're right about that!
Cop is another word for police officer, everyone.
Cops sometimes have to catch robbers or other bad people.
That's right, like a movie.
Now let's move on and learn our key words with Christina.
Hello.
(Chinese).
Hey, Carol.
Why is a police officer here?
I don't know.
Is he looking for someone?
I can ask.
Excuse me, officer?
Can we help you?
Yes.
I'm looking for a man.
He took some money from a bank near here.
Oh, no!
When?
This morning.
Many people are looking for him.
So someone took money from a bank nearby.
I hope they catch him.
I'm glad the police are looking for this person.
Yes, that makes me feel much better, too.
The police try to keep bad things from happening.
But when bad things do happen, they try to catch the bad people.
And that's what this officer is trying to do now.
We can call him a cop, a policeman or a police officer.
All of these mean the same thing.
And if you're talking to a policeman, you should always be polite.
Oh, yes.
Please remember to be polite if you're talking to a policeman.
Don't say, "Hey, you!" Say something like, "Excuse me, officer.".
Now the word "officer" can mean a few things.
Some people in the Army are called "officers," but you can also call a policeman
an officer.
Mmhm.
The policeman in the Jungle Cafe needs a little help.
He's looking for a man.
Hey!
That sounds a little like our Calendar Phrase.
I'm looking for a man.
I'm looking for a man.
(Chinese).
I'm looking for a man.
A handsome man.
I'm not handsome.
I'm looking for a man.
A smart man.
I'm not smart.
I'm looking for a man.
A strong man.
I'm not strong.
That's too bad.
But I'm very rich.
Hooray! I found a man.
I'm looking for a man.
I'm looking for a man.
(Chinese).
Police officers have to do many different things when they're working.
But they often have to find people.
So what can we call the man the police officer is looking for, Nathan?
That's a good question.
Well, he took money from a bank this morning.
We could call him a thief or a robber.
Thieves and robbers both steal things.
Well, that's true.
But a thief is a little different from a robber.
A thief just takes something that does not belong to him.
Mmhm.
But a robber scares people or even hurts people to take things.
So is the police officer looking for a thief or a robber?
Well, maybe we'll find out soon in the next conversation.
Let's see Conversation B right now.
Is he dangerous?
Yes, he's very dangerous.
He has a knife.
Well, what does he look like?
He is thin and he has black hair.
He is wearing a blue shirt.
Are you talking about John?
That man over there?
Yes, that looks like him!
Freeze!
Put your hands over your head!
Oh, no! This is terrible!
John isn't a thief, is he?
No, John's not a thief!
But he might be a robber.
What?
Nathan, how can you say that?
Well, the policeman is looking for a dangerous man.
He must be a robber.
But John just works at the Jungle Cafe.
He gives people food and drinks.
He doesn't steal from them.
Hmm, well, he tried to steal from me when I bought my lunch at the Jungle Cafe a
few days ago.
He was supposed to give me five dollars back, and he only gave me one.
Nathan, he wasn't stealing!
That was just a mistake.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what he said, too.
But I'm not so sure.
OK, everyone.
Nathan and I need to talk about this.
So why don't you all learn about today's Use It sentence?
(Music).
Hi, friends, today we're going to learn how to use the phrase:
That looks like something.
For example:
That looks like a bird.
Or:
That looks like your mother.
So remember to...
Use It!
(Music).
Well, I hope he's not the robber, Katie.
But I won't be surprised if he is the robber.
I don't know what else to say.
John's not the robber.
But Nathan still thinks John might be the robber.
I won't believe it.
You can believe what you want, but the policeman thinks John is the robber.
And when he said what the robber looked like, Ken thought about John, too.
OK.
That might be true.
But the robber still might be someone else.
Let's... let's talk about something else.
I know! Let's learn about the sentence "What does he look like?" with Christina.
(Chinese).
Thanks, Christina.
That is a great question to know how to ask, but we also need to know how to
answer that question.
Katie, how would you say what someone looks like?
Well, if I want to say what someone looks like, I can say he's tall, or he's
thin, or he has black hair and brown eyes.
That's how I ask... answer how someone looks.
So you can try it, too.
But right now, we want to take a break.
Please come back in just a fewminutes.
