Welcome to our Saturday review show right here on LTE TV.
My name is Nathan, and I'm a teacher here on the show.
We are going to have a great time together today.
Yes, we are.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
Are you excited to talk about what we learned this week?
I know I am.
We started the week talking about hot drinks and hot food.
Hot drinks are great to warm you up in the cold weather.
And we learned about the problem that Mark had.
See if you can remember what his problem was as we review this week's lessons.
(Music).
Brrr! The weather is really cold today.
I need a hot drink.
I'm having hot chocolate.
It's nice and hot!
Do you want some?
No thanks.
Hot chocolate tastes too sweet.
The Jungle Cafe has good chai today.
It has good eggnog, too.
I like tea with milk and spices.
I'll have a couple of chai.
The Jungle Cafe also has good coffee.
I know.
I drink the coffee here a lot.
I had six cups yesterday!
You drink a lot of coffee.
I know.
So I want something different today.
John, may I have some chai?
The chai can warm you up!
I hope so!
Ah! This chai smells great.
Ow! I burned my tongue!
You wanted a hot drink.
I know.
But this is too hot!
Wait a minute or two.
Then drink it.
Well, I can warm my hands up on the cup now.
True. Hot drinks are good for that, too!
I am so hungry!
What's for lunch?
Let's look at the menu for today's specials.
Let's see... the soup of the day is tomato.
I don't really like tomato soup.
The sandwich today is turkey and cheese.
Is it hot or cold?
You can get it either hot or cold.
I don't really want a sandwich.
What else is there?
I want something hot.
This stew sounds good.
What kind of stew?
It's chicken stew.
What is in it besides chicken?
Potatoes, carrots, tomatoes and green beans.
Does it come with anything?
It comes with toast.
That does sound good.
Is it spicy?
I don't know.
You can ask the waiter.
That's OK. I'll just order it.
Maybe I'll order it, too.
But I don't like things with lots of pepper in them.
I do.
Spicy food warms me up.
Spicy food makes me drink a lot of water!
That's true.
I'll ask the waiter about pepper in the stew.
I'll ask him something, too.
What's that?
How big is the bowl?
I hope it's really big, because I'm hungry!
Hi, Mark! Nice sweater.
Did you get it for Christmas?
Thanks, Ken.
Yes, my mom gave it to me for Christmas.
And...
And what?
And my aunt gave me the same sweater.
So I have two.
Are you going to return one of them?
Yes. I'll return the one from my aunt.
She gave me a gift receipt with it.
That was nice.
Then you can return it easily.
I know.
My aunt always gives gift receipts with her gifts.
Are you going to get something else or just take cash?
I'll probably get something else.
Most stores won't give you cash when you return something.
True.
Where did she buy the sweater?
She got it at Nelson's Department Store.
They have nice clothes.
I know.
I can find something there.
Or I can just get store credit.
That's good, too.
I don't really need any more clothes now.
I got clothes for Christmas.
Most of them still have the tags on them.
When will you return the sweater?
Sometime soon.
I only have 30 days to return it.
Let's see... where is a clerk?
Oh, one is coming this way.
Can I help you?
Yes, thank you.
I'd like to return this sweater.
Is there anything wrong with it?
No. I just got two of the same sweater for Christmas.
I understand.
Do you want to exchange it?
I'm not sure.
Why don't you look around?
Take your time.
Thanks, I will.
Did you see anything you like?
We have a lot of fashionable sweaters.
You do have some nice-looking things.
But I don't see anything I want right now.
That's fine.
I can give you store credit.
Do you have a receipt?
Yes, I have a gift receipt.
Great. Let me take it over to the cash register.
Thanks. How will you give me store credit?
I'll just put the amount of credit on a gift card.
That's great.
How much will the credit be?
Just a minute.
I'll check.
Here is your gift card.
You have a credit of $40.37.
Thanks. I'll use that when it's time to buy spring clothes.
That will be very soon.
Our spring clothes will be here in a few weeks!
eREPORT.
Hello, and welcome to eREPORT.
My name is Gabe.
Oh, and Happy New Year!
Yes. It is the beginning of a new year, which means it is cold outside.
(Background Noise).
You know, it's the perfect weather to go to a hot pot restaurant.
Yes! That's what I will be doing today.
That is the perfect meal to warm me up.
But of course, hot pot is better with friends, right?
I should have invited some friends to come with me.
Oh, hey, Katie!
Will you be my friend for lunch at a hot pot restaurant?
Yes! OK.
Let's get inside and warm up at a hot pot restaurant.
(Music).
There are different kinds of hot pot restaurants.
But at all of them, there is at least one or two stoves in each table.
Some places don't have a menu.
You just go to a buffet and take the food you want to cook and eat.
At others, you order from a menu.
Today Gabe and Katie are at a restaurant where they can order from a menu.
They can order different kinds of vegetables, meat and things like tofu and
mushrooms to put into their pot.
They can order different kinds of soups to cook these things into.
A waiter or waitress will start the pot for you.
Then you choose the food to cook in it.
Everything is fresh and ready to be cooked.
What do you like?
Some people like to eat healthy food.
Then maybe they want tofu or mushrooms.
Or maybe people like meat.
People can eat many kinds of meat or fish.
The meat for a hot pot is usually cut into small, thin slices so that it cooks
faster.
That was a great and easy way to make a meal in the middle of the long, cold
winters.
Oh, hey, everyone.
Well, we just gave our orders to the waitress.
And so we're going to sit here at the table until the food comes.
But that shouldn't take too long because all the food is not cooked yet.
And that is the best part about going to a hot pot restaurant - I get to be my
own cook.
That's right.
I get to make my own decisions here.
I can decide when and what to put into the soup.
Should I put the noodles in first?
Or maybe I should put the meat in first?
Or should I put the vegetables in first?
These are the kinds of questions you must ask yourself when you're at a hot pot
restaurant.
The tables in this hot pot restaurant have two stoves in them.
These stoves boil the soup in the pot.
One pot can have two different kinds of soups in it.
Katie ordered a special soup with seaweed in it.
Gabe ordered a soup with spicy herbs.
You can get other flavors of soup, too.
When the soup is boiling, you can begin cooking the food.
A hot pot often has a lot of steam from the hot water.
Be careful what you touch and eat.
The pot and the food can be very hot.
Let the food cook for about 10 minutes.
Remember to stir the soup often.
When you stir the food, it will help cook everything faster.
When the food is done, you can use your chopsticks or a serving spoon to put the
food in a bowl.
Let the food cool down a little before you eat.
When you eat at a hot pot restaurant, you can have different kinds of sauces.
You can choose what to put into your sauce and then dip your food into it.
The sauce can make the food taste better.
In this restaurant, people have a sauce for vegetables and a sauce for meat.
After you eat all the food in the hot pot, don't forget to drink the soup.
Mmm.
It will taste very good after you cooked your vegetables and meat in it.
The last dish you may get is for dessert.
Dessert can often be sweet.
A hot pot meal is a good time for friends and family to get together to talk and
eat.
Hot pot is not a meal you should eat quickly.
You need to take time to enjoy cooking the food and talking with others.
Enjoying hot pot means time with friends and family.
Mmm.
Oh, excuse me.
I'm sorry, that was very rude.
I was slurping while drinking my soup.
Wait a minute.
I'm in Asia, that's OK!
But in North America, slurping is bad manners.
So I should apologize to my North American friend here.
I'm sorry for slurping.
Anyway, I have enjoyed a delicious hot pot meal here.
And you know what?
I feel like I'm actually quite tired, because not only did I eat, but I had to
cook everything that I ate.
And I don't think I have any room for dessert.
No?
Although it does look really good.
Hmm, maybe I have a little bit of room for dessert.
OK, before I get to that, I need to say...
This is Gabe for eREPORT enjoying a hot pot meal with my new friend...
Um, excuse me, what's your name again?
Katie.
OK. Now that you've reviewed all this week's lessons, it's time for some review
questions.
Are you ready for one, Katie?
Oh, I am ready, Nathan.
Ask your question.
OK. Here's the first question.
What happened to Ken after he tried to drink chai?
Oh. That's a good question.
But I know the answer.
He burned his tongue.
Yes, that's right.
Hot drinks can burn your tongue.
That's why you have to wait a few minutes before you try to drink a hot drink.
Well, that's a great tip, Nathan.
Have you ever burned your tongue on a hot drink before?
Yes, too many times.
But you can also burn your tongue on hot food.
You know what, everyone?
If you're eating or drinking something hot, just wait a few minutes.
That's probably a lot safer.
Well, I think you're right.
So here's one more question to review.
Who gave Mark the sweaters for Christmas?
Oh, that's... that's a tough question, Katie.
I'm not sure I know the answer to that one.
Oh, Nathan, I know you can answer it.
OK! Let me think.
I know Mark's mom gave him one sweater.
That's right.
So who gave him the second sweater?
Oh! Ah, his aunt, right?
You're right about that.
Friends, I hope that you knew the answer, too.
Right now we need to take abreak.
