You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we hope that you're ready to learn a lot today.
Today our new topic is eREPORT.
And the title of our lesson is Hot Pot.
Hot Pot.
Nathan, do you like hot pot?
Oh, sure.
Hot pot is great.
There're so many good kinds of food that you can eat at a hot pot.
And you get to cook them yourself.
Hello, everyone, my name is Nathan.
It's great to be here with you for today's lesson.
Now, Katie, what do you think about hot pot?
Do you like it?
Well, yes.
Actually, Nathan, hot pot is one of my favorite things to eat.
I think it's fun because you can cook your own food.
And like we'll talk about today, it's something good to eat when it is cold
outside, because you can eat soup and it keeps you warm.
Nathan, do you go to hot pot often?
I go to hot pot with my family sometimes.
We always have a good time there.
Now for today's lesson, we have an eREPORT.
We have a video for you to watch of people visiting a hot pot restaurant.
Hello.
(Chinese).
eREPORT.
Hello, and welcome to eREPORT.
My name is Gabe.
Oh, and Happy New Year!
Yes, it is the beginning of a new year, which means it is cold outside.
You know, it's the perfect weather to go to a hot pot restaurant.
Yes! That's what I will be doing today.
That is the perfect meal to warm me up.
But of course, hot pot is better with friends, right?
I should have invited some friends to come with me.
Oh, hey, Katie!
Will you be my friend for lunch at a hot pot restaurant?
Yes! OK.
Let's get inside and warm up at a hot pot restaurant.
There are different kinds of hot pot restaurants.
But at all of them, there is at least one or two stoves in each table.
Some places don't have a menu.
You just go to a buffet and take the food you want to cook and eat.
At others, you order from a menu.
Today Gabe and Katie are at a restaurant where they can order from a menu.
They can order different kinds of vegetables, meat and things like tofu and
mushrooms to put into their pot.
They can order different kinds of soups to cook these things into.
A waiter or waitress will start the pot for you.
Then you choose the food to cook in it.
Everything is fresh and ready to be cooked.
What do you like?
Some people like to eat healthy food.
Then maybe they want tofu or mushrooms.
Or maybe people like meat.
People can eat many kinds of meat or fish.
The meat for a hot pot is usually cut into small thin slices so that it cooks
faster.
(Music).
Well, hot pot is one of my favorite things to eat when I visit often.
When I go, I usually go with a group of friends.
It's a lot of fun.
You know, hot pot has been around for a long, long time, Katie.
That's right.
And that's the first thing that we learn in today's eREPORT.
Hot pot started many years ago in Northern China.
It was an easy meal to make in the winter.
Hey, I know why that is.
Hot pot is hot.
It keeps you warm when it's cold outside.
Oh, that is a great point, Nathan.
I know a lot of people who like to eat hot pot when it gets cold outside.
When it's cold outside, I like to eat hot foods, too.
Yeah. I don't like to eat ice cream or popsicles when the weather is cold.
Winter is the perfect time to go to hot pot.
And hot pot is easy.
It's different from a normal restaurant.
Hmm. How is it different, Katie?
Well, you get to choose the food you want to cook, and then you cook it
yourself.
Well, that's right.
But a waiter or waitress starts the pot for you.
Wait, a waiter or waitress?
Who are they?
Oh, a waiter or waitress is someone who works at a restaurant.
It's kind of a hard job to do sometimes.
It is.
And I think I know something else about this word.
A waitress is a girl, and a waiter is a boy.
That's right, Katie.
It's like the words actor and actress.
An actor is a boy, and an actress is a girl.
Well, that's true.
Now, Nathan, have you ever been a waiter?
No. I have never been a waiter at a restaurant before.
It might be fun.
Now at a hot pot restaurant, a waiter or a waitress helps you start your pot.
And then you go to a buffet.
Oh, I love buffets.
At a buffet, you can pick all the food you want to eat and take it back to your
table.
That way you can get only the things that you want to eat.
That's right.
And now I think Christina wants to teach us about a sentence pattern.
(Chinese).
It's a great and easy way to make a meal in the middle of the long cold winters.
Oh, hey, everyone.
Well, we just gave our orders to the waitress.
And so we're going to sit here at the table until the food comes.
But that shouldn't take too long because all the food is not cooked yet.
And that is the best part about going to a hot pot restaurant.
I get to be my own cook.
That's right, I get to make my own decisions here.
I can decide when and what to put into the soup.
Should I put the noodles in first?
Or maybe I should put the meat in first?
Or should I put the vegetables in first?
These are the kinds of questions you must ask yourself when you're at a hot pot
restaurant.
The tables in this hot pot restaurant have two stoves in them.
These stoves boil the soup in the pot.
One pot can have two different kinds of soups in it.
Katie ordered a special soup with seaweed in it.
Gabe ordered a soup with spicy herbs.
You can get other flavors of soup, too.
When the soup is boiling, you can begin cooking the food.
A hot pot often has a lot of steam from the hot water.
Be careful what you touch and eat.
The pot and the food can be very hot.
Let the food cook for about ten minutes.
Remember to stir the soup often.
When you stir the food, it will help cook everything faster.
When the food is done, you can use your chopsticks or a serving spoon to put the
food in a bowl.
Let the food cool down a little before you eat.
(Music).
Well, we learned last time that you pick your food at a buffet when you go to a
hot pot restaurant.
Or you can order your own food from a waiter or waitress.
You can order meat, tofu and vegetables.
But you have to order something else at hot pot.
You have to order your soup.
Oh, that's right!
The soup is what you will cook all your food in.
The soup has to be really, really hot for all the food to cook.
That's right.
The soup has to boil before it cooks the food.
That's one of today's key words.
Yes, it was.
And when water or soup boils, it gets so, so hot that it starts to bubble.
And it's important to be very careful if you are around boiling water.
That's right.
But at hot pot, you know your food is ready to be cooked when the soup is
boiling.
Hey, Nathan, are there any foods that you have to boil before you can eat them?
Well, of course you have to cook noodles in boiling water.
The water makes the noodles soft so you can eat them.
That's true.
And sometimes I like to boil eggs.
That's another food that you can boil.
But today, we're talking about boiling meat, vegetables and tofu.
How long do you have to cook your food at hot pot?
Well, our eREPORT can answer that question.
It says that you have to let the food cook for about ten minutes.
Ugh, that's a long time if you're hungry.
Yes. But if you wait, the food will be really good.
And you can do things while you wait for the food to be ready, Katie.
Well, what can you do?
You can talk to your friends.
But you should also remember to stir your soup.
And Christina wants to talk to us about that right now.
(Chinese).
Christina is right.
It's important not to forget to stir the soup when you eat hot pot.
That's right.
And now that we've learned a lot, let's take a quick break.
We'll be right back.
(Music).
