Thanks for joining us here on today's show.
We hope that you have a great time learning some English and having some fun
with us today.
My name is Nathan.
I'm one of your teachers here on Let's Talk in English.
Today we want to continue our FOOD topic.
And today's lesson is still called I Need Something Hot.
I Need Something Hot.
Katie, what is your favorite hot meal?
Ooh, that is a good question, Nathan.
My favorite hot meal is a bowl of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.
That's great on a cold day.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie, and I'm your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
I hope that you're ready to learn a lot today about hot food.
And I hope you are ready to open up your magazine, find today's Read It and read
it with Katie now.
Rob is hungry.
He looks at the menu.
The specials today are tomato soup and a sandwich.
Rob wants something hot.
Maybe he will order chicken stew.
It comes with toast.
Will the stew have a lot of pepper in it?
Rob hopes so.
He likes spicy food.
So some restaurants choose special foods to sell each day.
We usually call these foods specials.
And sometimes specials are often cheaper than other foods.
Maybe a sandwich is cheaper on Monday.
And then a salad is cheaper on Tuesday.
If you want to save some money, you can buy these specials.
Right.
It's always good to look at the specials.
And now would be a great time to look at our key words with Christina.
Hello. (Chinese).
(Music).
I am so hungry!
What's for lunch?
Let's look at the menu for today's specials.
Let's see... the soup of the day is tomato.
I don't really like tomato soup.
The sandwich today is turkey and cheese.
Is it hot or cold?
You can get it either hot or cold.
I don't really want a sandwich.
What else is there?
I want something hot.
Hey, Katie, what's for lunch today?
What?
I... I don't make your lunch, Nathan, and it's not lunchtime.
We're teaching.
Well, I wish it was lunchtime, though.
I mean instead, it's time to learn words about lunch.
That's right.
We can even learn about the question that you asked:
What's for lunch?
You can use this question when you want to know what you'll eat at lunchtime.
So, you can also ask, "What's for dinner?" or "What's for breakfast?".
If you go to a restaurant, you can choose what you want.
In the Jungle Cafe, the soup of the day is tomato soup.
That means it's a special.
And today's sandwich is turkey and cheese.
It's also a special today.
But you may not really want a sandwich.
If you don't really want something, that means that you would rather choose
something different.
Mmhm.
You can look for something else in the menu.
Or you can ask the waiter:
What else is there that is cheap?
That's right.
"What else" means what other things.
Now, Nathan, how do you choose what to eat when you're at a restaurant?
Well, that is a very good question.
It's not always easy, but I like to try different things at restaurants.
So I look and see what is new.
And then maybe I'll try it.
Well, now Christina wants to talk to you about the phrase: hot or cold.
So let's see what she has to say right now.
(Chinese).
This stew sounds good.
What kind of stew?
It's chicken stew.
What is in it besides chicken?
Potatoes, carrots, tomatoes and green beans.
Does it come with anything?
It comes with toast.
That does sound good.
Is it spicy?
I don't know.
You can ask the waiter.
That's OK. I'll just order it.
Mmm, stew.
That's a great hot food.
Do you like stew, Nathan?
Mmm, well, sure.
Beef stew is very tasty.
And this chicken stew sounds good, too.
How can it sound good?
Does chicken stew make noise?
Well, only if it's not cooked enough, and then it goes bwak.
No, of course it doesn't make noise.
That just means that I think it would taste good.
Oh. That's right.
If we hear about something, we can say it sounds good if we like the idea.
But what's in the stew besides chicken?
Well, that is a good question.
You could also ask, "What else is in it?" And that is a good Calendar Phrase.
What else is in it?
What else is in it?
(Chinese).
I'm making chicken stew.
Bwak...
What's in it?
It has tomatoes.
Bwak...
What else is in it?
It has carrots.
Bwak...
What else is in it?
It has potatoes.
What else is in it?
It has green beans.
Anything else?
Chicken!
I'm making chicken stew!
Chicken? Oh, no!
Bwak...
What else is in it?
What else is in it?
(Chinese).
So, what else is in this stew?
Well, there are some vegetables in it.
But I have another question, Nathan.
What comes with the stew?
Well, it comes with toast.
Does that sound good to you, Katie?
Uh... not really.
I wish it came with rice.
Maybe I'll ask the waiter if I can change it.
Um, Katie, we aren't at the Jungle Cafe.
I think you must be getting hungry, too.
Oh, yeah, you're right, Nathan.
Maybe I'll get a snack while Christina teaches us a phrase right now.
(Chinese).
(Music).
That's great.
You can go to a restaurant and use the phrase that Christina taught us today.
Now Katie, when you go to restaurants, do you like to change what comes with
your meal?
No, Nathan, I usually stay with what comes with the meal.
I'm happy to eat anything and I don't want to make the waiter do any extra work.
Well, friends, right now it's time for us to take a short break.
But don't go away; we'll be rightback.
