Hello, friends, and welcome to our first Saturday review show for the new year.
My name is Katie, and I think that this will be a great year of learning English
together.
I'm excited for us to get started.
Yes. And I'm excited, too.
Hi, everyone, my name is Nathan.
And today we are going to review our lessons from this week.
Well, this week we started in December.
Our friends at the station all talked about their goals for the new year.
Friends, did you make any goals for the new year?
What did you decide to do?
The end of the year is a great time to make a change in your life.
Many people decide to get healthy and exercise more.
And then January started.
There was a guest at the studio who wanted to meet with Carol.
And she was a big fan of Rob.
Oh, I remember that.
And Rob was a fan of Patty.
That was a cool day.
And then on Friday, we learned how to play Go Fish.
That's a game everybody knows how to play.
OK. So now let's review these conversations together.
And we'll see how much you remember about them.
(Music).
Look at this article, Mark.
It's about people's plans for the new year.
Many people have big goals for the new year.
They do!
Look at this woman.
What is her goal?
To run a marathon!
Wow. A marathon is more than 26 miles!
Can she do it?
Sure. She can run more each day.
Here's a picture of a big man.
What's his plan for the new year?
To lose weight!
That's a common new year's goal.
Yes, it is.
Oh, he also has another goal.
What is it?
He can spend more time with family and friends.
That's good.
Many people work too much.
True. Maybe I do, too.
What are you saying, Susie?
I need a vacation!
That can be your goal for the new year!
Where can you go?
Alaska!
I can take a cruise there.
That's my dream vacation!
Then do it!
OK! Now I have a plan for 2014!
Good! And now I'm thinking about my own plans for the future!
Today is New Year's Eve!
I can't believe it!
I can't, either!
This year flew by!
Hey, do you have any goals for 2014, Megan?
Not yet.
But my uncle has a good goal.
What is it?
He plans to quit smoking!
Good for him!
He'll be healthier.
Yes, if he can really quit!
The habit is hard to break.
Mark, did you think more about your goals for next year?
Yes! One of them is to save more money.
That's a great goal.
Do you want to save your money to buy something?
No. I just want to be more careful with my money.
I sometimes waste it.
I see.
Hey, I just thought of a goal for next year.
What's your goal, Megan?
I want to sell my earrings and other handmade things online!
Good idea!
Yes! Start your own business!
You can make extra money.
You two will have more money next year.
But I'm going to spend my money on a cruise!
That's OK! It's your dream vacation!
It sure is!
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!
Hello! I'm looking for Carol.
Is she here?
Yes, she is.
But can I help you?
I'm Megan.
My name is Patty Jones.
I work down the street.
I'm pleased to meet you!
It's nice to meet you, too.
Do you have a meeting with Carol?
Yes. But I'm a little early.
Carol is in another meeting now.
She'll be here in 15 minutes.
Do you want a short tour?
A tour? Sure!
I can show you around the office.
And I can introduce you to some of the other workers here.
Thanks! What is your job?
I'm Carol's secretary.
I help her with, well, everything!
So where are we now?
This is the office area.
Many of us work on our computers here.
Can you show me the studio next?
Of course. Guests love the studio!
Is Rob in the studio now?
I'm not sure.
Why do you ask?
Rob is my favorite TV show host!
I really want to meet him!
This is the Jungle Cafe.
My coworkers and I take our breaks here.
They sell very good coffee.
I love coffee!
Oh, there's Rob!
Rob, I want you to meet someone.
Hi, Megan.
Rob, this is Patty.
She's here to see Carol.
It's so nice to meet you!
I love your show.
I'm pleased to meet you, Patty.
I can't believe it!
I'm talking to Rob!
You have a fan, Rob!
I guess so!
Patty, where do you work?
I work at a radio station.
I'm a radio show host.
Which radio show?
Good Morning Patty.
You're Patty from Good Morning Patty?
I listen to you on the radio every morning!
Wow, I have a fan, too!
Yes! I love your show.
You talk about very interesting things!
Thank you.
Your show is great, too!
Your interviews are very interesting.
Thank you!
Patty, are you ready to see Carol?
She should be available now.
Great, let's go.
Rob, it was very nice to meet you!
Perhaps I'll see you around later?
I hope so!
Let's play a game of cards!
I have some cards with me.
Cool! What game should we play?
We can play Go Fish.
Everybody knows how to play that.
I don't know how to play.
What? It's easy!
We'll teach you how to play.
OK. Do we have enough players?
Sure. Three people can play this game.
I'll pass around the cards, and then we can start.
Now everyone has seven cards.
We'll put the rest of the cards here on the table.
OK. What do I do?
Look at your cards.
Do you have any pairs?
Yes, I do.
I have two fours.
Great! Put those down on the table.
Pairs are important.
In this game, you want to get as many pairs as you can!
How can I get more pairs?
You'll see!
To get another pair, just ask Megan or me for a card.
If we have that card in our hands, we give it to you.
If we don't, we say, "Go fish!".
And you have to pick up another card.
I think I understand.
Megan, do you have a three?
Yes! Here.
If you get the most pairs, you win!
But if you have the least, you lose!
(Music).
Well, I hope you enjoyed seeing those conversations again.
We did a lot this week.
So now it's time to ask some questions and see how much you remember.
OK, Katie, I'll ask the first question.
One of Susie's goals for the new year is to go on a vacation.
Can you tell where her dream vacation is?
Oh. That's a good question.
I remember she wanted to take a trip.
But where did she want to go?
Was it Europe?
No. It wasn't Europe.
Why don't you try to answer it again?
OK. Where did she want to go?
Oh. I remember now.
Susie's dream vacation is to go to Alaska.
That's right, Katie.
And how did she want to get to Alaska?
Oh, I definitely know that!
Susie wants to take a cruise to Alaska.
Oh, that sounds like so much fun.
So have you been to Alaska on a cruise before, Katie?
No. I've been on a cruise before, but never a cruise to Alaska.
That sounds like a great time.
Yes, it does.
Now I hope that Susie gets to take that vacation.
That's a great goal for the new year.
Yes, it is a great goal.
There are many good goals you can make for the new year.
Maybe you want to try something new.
Maybe you want to exercise more.
Or maybe you want to start a new job.
Well, those are some good ideas, Nathan.
But now, I have another question for you this time.
Are you ready?
Of course, Katie.
Let's hear it.
OK. On January 1st, Patty Jones comes to visit the office.
Where does Patty work?
Oh. Well, that's a good question.
But I know the answer.
Patty works down the street.
That's right. And like we learned in that lesson, "down the street" just means
nearby.
Patty's office is close to the station.
OK. I hope you could answer that question, too.
But now it's time for abreak.
