Thanks for joining us here on the show for today's lesson.
We're going to have a great time with you today.
My name is Nathan, and I'm one of your teachers here on Let's Talk in English.
Now today's new topic is HOBBIES.
And today's lesson is called Let's Play Cards!
Let's Play Cards!
So do you like to play cards, Katie?
Well, yeah, Nathan, I really like to play cards.
It's fun to play card games with your friends.
That's something entertaining you can do.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I'm your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
We have a great show.
And I'm excited for it because I think it will be great.
Now let's get started.
Open up your magazine and find today's Read It.
Now you can read it with Katie.
Ken and Megan are teaching Mark how to play cards.
With three players, they can play a game of Go Fish.
To win Go Fish, Mark needs the most pairs of cards.
To get pairs of cards, he asks the other players for a card, or picks up a card
from the table.
Mark learns quickly.
He might win!
Hmm, he might win!
Well, hobbies are important.
There are things that you like to do.
Katie, what are some of your hobbies?
Well, I love to read and play some sports and go running.
And you like to play cards, too.
That's right. I guess that playing cards is another one of my hobbies.
Nathan, do you like to play cards?
I do like to play cards.
But you know what?
One of my other hobbies is learning key words with Christina.
Hello.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Let's play a game of cards!
I have some cards with me.
Cool! What game should we play?
We can play Go Fish.
Everybody knows how to play that.
I don't know how to play.
What? It's easy!
We'll teach you how to play.
OK. Do we have enough players?
Sure. Three people can play this game.
I'll pass around the cards, and then we can start.
Card games are a fun thing to do with your friends.
Have you played Go Fish before, Katie?
Yes, I have.
And you're right, it's a fun game to play with your friends.
But some people don't know how to play.
Well, that's true.
And that's also a great sentence to learn.
I don't know how to do something.
Katie, can you give us an example?
Hmm. Oh, I know.
I don't know how to play football.
And I don't know how to sing very well.
Thanks, Katie.
And you know what?
That's today's Calendar Phrase.
I don't know how to play.
I don't know how to play.
(Chinese).
Let's play basketball.
I don't know how to play.
Let's play soccer.
I don't know how to play.
Let's play baseball.
I don't know how to play.
So what can you play?
I can play cards.
Cards?
I don't know how to play.
I don't know how to play.
I don't know how to play.
(Chinese).
And that was our Calendar Phrase for today.
I think that is a helpful sentence to learn.
It is.
And if you don't know how to do something, you can learn how to do it.
But I think a lot of people know how to play Go Fish.
It's an easy game to learn and play.
Hmm. What else do you think everybody knows how to do?
Oh, that is a good question!
Oh. I think that everybody knows how to use an iPhone.
Don't you think that's true?
Yes, everybody probably knows how to use an iPhone.
That is probably something everybody knows about.
But if you don't know how to play Go Fish, our friends at the studio will teach
you.
Oh, Katie, uh, before we learn how to play Go Fish, let's talk about a word
here.
OK. What word do you want to talk about?
Let's talk about the word teach.
You teach people how to do things.
And we are teachers because we teach you how to speak English.
But there's something important to know about this word.
The past tense of teach is taught.
T-A-U-G-H-T.
Yes. We teach you things today, but we taught you things yesterday.
Friends, right now we're out of time, so let's go and learn something from
Christina.
(Chinese).
Now everyone has seven cards.
We'll put the rest of the cards here on the table.
OK. What do I do?
Look at your cards.
Do you have any pairs?
Yes, I do.
I have two fours.
Great! Put those down on the table.
Pairs are important.
In this game, you want to get as many pairs as you can!
How can I get more pairs?
You'll see!
Megan and Ken are great at teaching Mark how to play Go Fish.
They're almost ready to play the game now.
Yes. They have passed out the cards.
And now they are going to put the rest of the cards on the table.
So we have found out one thing we need to do when we play Go Fish.
So let's learn the rest of the things we need to know.
Hmm. Well, Ken asks Mark if he has any pairs of cards.
A pair is two things of each other.
A lot of things come in pairs.
That's right.
We can say that we have a pair of glasses.
Or you wear a pair of shoes.
And you wear a pair of pants.
Mmhm. And I guess you could wear a pair of earrings.
Is there another kind of pair, Katie?
Well, I know that I wear a pair of gloves when it's really cold outside.
See? A lot of things you use every day come in pairs.
That's why it's a great phrase to know.
That's right.
Now Mark had a pair of cards.
He had two fours.
Yes, so he has to put those on the table.
Pairs are important.
In this game, you want to get as many pairs as you can.
So in the game Go Fish, you want to get as many pairs as you can.
So how can you get more pairs?
I think that we need to wait and see.
Oh. Katie, that is a great phrase to learn about, too.
Wait and see, or we can say you'll see.
When we say you'll see, we mean to say wait and see.
That's right.
It's like saying that you will find out at a different time.
You can say it to someone when you want to surprise them.
And now we need to learn some more from Christina.
(Chinese).
Well, that was some great help from Christina.
I'm sure that you all learned a lot.
Right now it's time for us to take... to take a short break.
But we'll be right back afterthat.
