Thanks for coming back to today's lesson, everyone.
Our topic is SMALL TALK.
It's the kind of things that you talk about or that you ask questions about to
someone that you don't know very well.
And today we also learned about what to do if you're early or late to somewhere.
If you're early somewhere, maybe you can read a book.
Carol's secretary Megan is making small talk today.
Let's go see what she is doing now.
So where are we now?
This is the office area.
Many of us work on our computers here.
Can you show me the studio next?
Of course. Guests love the studio!
Is Rob in the studio now?
I'm not sure.
Why do you ask?
Rob is my favorite TV show host!
I really want to meet him!
When you go on a tour of a place, you see a lot of different areas.
And an area is a small part of something big.
Patty and Megan are in the office area.
Nathan, what are some other areas?
Hmm. Well, at your school, there might be an area where you eat lunch.
And there might be an area where you play sports.
And there's an area that has classrooms, too.
Yeah, that's true.
And at an office, there are break areas, too.
That's where you might take a rest for a little while.
There are a lot of important questions you might ask on a tour.
Patty asks, "Can you show me the studio next?".
And that's our Use It sentence.
Let's learn about this sentence right now.
(Music).
Hello, my name is Elizabeth.
Welcome to Use It.
Today we are going to learn how to use the phrase:
Can you show me...?
For example: Can you show me the kitchen?
Or: Can you show me your room?
Till next time, remember to use it!
Well, that is a great question to know.
You could use that question when you're on a tour or when you just want to see
something new.
Patty wants to see the studio.
A lot of guests like to see the studio.
But what is a guest?
Let's talk about that word right now.
Well, a guest is someone who visits somewhere.
If I stay at a friend's house, I am their guest.
And if you visit a place, you are a guest there.
Sometimes guests visit for holidays.
And if you have guests at your home, you are called a host.
Friends, have you been a guest before?
Maybe you stayed at a hotel.
You were a guest at the hotel.
Well, now Patty really wants to meet Rob.
He is her favorite TV host.
She likes him the best.
So, Katie, can you think of anyone that you would really like to meet someday?
Well, I think that I would really like to meet an author named J.K. Rowling.
I think it'd be so interesting to meet her because she wrote a lot of great
books.
Yes. There are famous people we might all want to meet.
Now, right now I think it's time to review our key words together.
Here's the first key word.
meeting.
meeting.
My mom has a meeting with my teacher.
area.
area.
Fruit is in this area of the store.
secretary.
secretary.
My secretary answers the phone.
introduce.
introduce.
Leah, introduce us to your boyfriend!
pleased.
pleased.
I'm pleased to meet you!
All right, friends, those are all of the key words that we learned today.
Make sure that you practice them, and that way you'll be able to speak a lot of
great English.
We know you can do it.
Right now we're going to review today's conversations.
Hello! I'm looking for Carol.
Is she here?
Yes, she is.
But can I help you?
I'm Megan.
My name is Patty Jones.
I work down the street.
I'm pleased to meet you.
It's nice to meet you, too.
Do you have a meeting with Carol?
Yes. But I'm a little early.
Carol is in another meeting now.
She'll be here in 15 minutes.
Do you want a short tour?
A tour? Sure!
I can show you around the office.
And I can introduce you to some of the other workers here.
Thanks! What is your job?
I'm Carol's secretary.
I help her with, well, everything!
Hello, Ginger!
Yes. May I help you?
Help me?
Yes. I am your new secretary.
My new secretary!
Ginger, I don't need a secretary.
Oh, yes, you do!
Every Monkey Man needs a secretary.
OK. Why do I need a secretary?
I can tell you when to go to meetings.
But I don't have any meetings!
Oh. Then I'll tell you not to go to meetings.
Ginger, thank you.
But I don't need a secretary.
I can introduce you to new coworkers.
What new coworkers?
I can show them around the office, too.
What office?
And I can answer the phone.
What phone?
This phone!
Hello. May I help you?
Ginger, I don't need a secretary.
Thanks.
(Music).
This was the first lesson of the new year.
And I think it was a great one.
Yes. We learned some great things.
We often meet a lot of new people.
And when you meet someone new, it's important to introduce yourself.
Yes. And it's polite to tell someone that it's nice to meet them.
And you might also make small talk when you meet a new friend, too.
And you can make small talk by asking how your friend is today or if your friend
likes the weather lately.
You can also ask someone how their job is going.
That's a very polite question to ask.
Or do you think that it's better to be early or late to a meeting?
What do you do if you're early?
So think about these questions, friends.
We'll see you again tomorrow here on...
Let's Talk in English. Bye-bye.
(Music).
