Welcome to the LTE TV studio.
You are watching Let's Talk in English, and we are ready to learn with you
today.
My name is Nathan.
I'm glad to see you again today here on the show.
Now today we still have the same topic as yesterday.
PEOPLE.
And our lesson is still called I Don't Like It!
I Don't Like It!
Katie, what was the problem that Mark had yesterday?
Well, yesterday Susie's dog threw up under Mark's desk.
He definitely didn't like it. That was a problem.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And we have another great lesson for you here at Let's Talk in English.
So let's get ready for it.
Take out your magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Carol allowed Susie to bring her dog to work.
Mark does not agree with that decision.
He is complaining.
Susie's dog gets into people's garbage.
Susie cleans up the garbage, but Mark is still unhappy.
People play with the dog and don't do their work.
Susie promised to keep Rex in her office.
But she forgets.
Well, I think that we have a lot to talk about today.
So let's get started with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Carol. Do you have a minute?
Sure, Mark.
May I talk to you about Susie's dog?
Of course. Is there a problem?
Well, you allowed her to bring him.
He's a little puppy. He doesn't bother anyone.
I don't agree. He bothers me.
Why?
He doesn't stay with Susie. He walks around the office.
Well... Mark is telling Carol what he really thinks.
But he's not being rude.
He says, "Do you have a minute?" It's always nice to ask that question.
You're right. It's very polite.
It's a good way to ask someone if they have a little time.
If you want to ask someone something or talk to them, then you can ask them
this.
And if they say yes, they are allowing you to talk to them.
Aha, our first key word.
allow.
allow.
If you allow something, you let it happen.
Carol allows Mark to talk to her when she says that she has a minute.
Sometimes you might have to ask your boss to allow you to do something or to get
something.
Like if you have an idea that you want to try, you need to see if the boss will
allow you to work on it.
You may have to do that.
But most of us have also asked our parents if they will allow us to do
something, too.
Oh, yes. I did that a lot when I was younger.
I would ask them to allow me to stay at a friend's house.
Now what did you ask your parents, Nathan?
Well, I remember asking if they would allow me to see a movie.
Sometimes they said yes and sometimes they said no.
I think most parents are like that.
Sometimes they agree with what you want to do, but sometimes they don't.
Hey, that is a great way to use our next key word.
agree.
agree.
If you agree with someone, you think the same thing that they do.
Now does Mark agree with Carol about Susie's dog, Katie?
No. No, he doesn't agree with Carol.
Carol thinks that the dog isn't a problem.
But Mark thinks that he is a problem.
He does not agree with her.
Good job, Katie. That is right.
Mark does not agree with Carol.
Now we can also say that Mark disagrees with Carol.
But friends, we often say "agree with" when we are talking about two people, but
we can also say that we agree to something.
That means we say that we will do it.
If a friend asks me for help with something, I will agree to help them if I have
time.
So that means that I will help them with what they need help with.
Now if someone... wait.
What? You want to go to Conversation B?
Well, I'll agree to that. Let's go there now.
(Music).
Then close your office door so he won't bother you.
He bothers other people, too.
He gets into people's garbage.
Then he takes garbage around the office.
That's not good. But Susie cleans it up.
Yes. But some people still don't like him.
But he's a really nice dog.
I know. So people play with him and don't do their work.
Pets can cause some problems in the office.
But we used to have a cat in our office.
And I think most people really liked him.
Didn't you like him, Nathan?
Well, sure. Maji was a great cat.
He didn't make any trouble.
But we did have to watch him sometimes.
If he smelled something in the garbage, he could get into it.
Yeah, I guess you're right.
Let's talk about that key word that Nathan just used.
garbage.
garbage.
Garbage is the stuff that you throw away.
You don't want it or need it so you put it in the trash.
Garbage is another word for trash.
So what do you put garbage in?
Well, you can put garbage in garbage bags.
Sometimes we use big black bags to put garbage in.
And in the city here, we use small blue bags to put garbage in.
And you can put garbage bags in garbage cans.
I have a small garbage can at my desk in the office.
And I have another garbage can in my room at my apartment, too.
Garbage can be things like tissues, cups or things that had food in them.
But food can also be garbage.
That's the kind of garbage that pets like to get into.
Yes. Because they can eat it.
If an animal gets into something, they look through it or maybe they play with
it.
It's usually not good to get into something.
Sometimes we say that people get into trouble.
That means that bad things happen to them because they did something wrong.
You can also get into bad traffic when you are driving.
That's not good, either.
But if an animal gets into your garbage, you will have to clean it up.
And that was a key word phrase, so let's take a look.
clean up.
clean up.
You might know the word clean, but we often say clean up.
It just means to make something look good by taking away the bad or dirty
things.
So you might need to clean up a mess.
Maybe you drop what you are drinking.
You have to clean it up.
Or you might need to clean up trash that you see outside on the street.
Yes. We should all help clean up the trash outside.
That way our streets and our city looks very nice.
And if friends are coming over to your house, you should clean it up.
You want your house to look nice.
That's right.
It's always a good idea to make your house look nice and clean it up when
friends are coming.
Now Susie also needs to clean up after her dog.
If he makes a mess, she should clean it up.
But let's see what Carol says to Mark now in Conversation C.
Did you talk to Susie about this?
Yes. She promised to keep him in her office.
But she forgets to close her door.
At the end of the week, let's talk about this again.
OK. Dogs really don't belong in an office.
Well, some companies allow dogs.
But if many people complain, Rex will have to stay home.
Thank you, Carol.
I think Carol would like to allow Rex to stay in the office, but she also wants
to be fair.
She knows Mark does not think he should be there.
So what did she decide, Katie?
Well, she is letting Rex stay for now.
But if many people complain, Rex will have to stay at home.
Carol will talk to Mark about it at the end of the week.
I think Carol had a great idea.
But Katie just used a great key word in a great sentence.
Let's look at the key word first.
complain.
complain.
If you complain, you say that you don't like something.
Most people don't like to hear other people complain.
But sometimes people need to complain to stop something bad.
Hmm. People might complain if someone smokes where it is not allowed.
They don't want to breathe the smoke so they complain.
And that's not bad.
Or you might need to complain if someone is very, very noisy where you live.
That's OK to do, also.
But some people complain for bad reasons.
Right. Try not to complain about food or about people that you don't know.
That is not good.
But now let's look at the "Use It!" sentence that Katie used earlier.
If many people do something, (blank) will have to do something.
If many people hear us, we will have to leave.
Or if many people are learning English, they will have to practice key words
together.
So let's practice the key words together!
Here's the first one.
allow.
allow.
Pat doesn't allow her son to eat candy.
agree.
agree.
I agree with you. I feel the same way.
complain.
complain.
Al complains when the food is bad.
garbage.
garbage.
Put these things in the garbage.
clean up.
clean up.
Please clean up the kitchen.
OK. We hope that you can use all of these key words.
You should practice them with a friend and try to remember them.
But right now it's time for us to take a break.
Pleasecome back.
